Well, during the 90's we had quite the purple and teal craze. 

Seattle Mariners
Arizona Diamondbacks
Florida Marlins
Colorado Rockies
Baltimore Ravens
Carolina Panthers
Charlotte Hornets
Sacramento Kings
Toronto Raptors
Arizona Coyotes
San Jose Sharks

All were created or recolored in the 90's with one of those colors.

Is it from advances in materials or dyeing technology? I remember there were teal cars back then as well and that color has disappeared from the auto industry as well.

I think the Anaheim Angels had a purple and teal color in their uniforms (and the Anaheim Ducks as well).

A few of those teams were expansion teams at one point during that decade.  They wanted something different and when the merchandise sold you saw other teams incorporate it as well.

I think it was just a fashion fad, like high top fades and puffy pants.  One of the biggest current trends in sports is BFBS: Black For Black's Sake.  Meaning teams that have no black in their color scheme are wearing black uniforms.  This is a big scourge in college football, basketball, and the NBA.
