Leo Ashcraft - Dark Matter News - A Long Side Knight

"One by one the animals fell critical to their demise." -just blurted out by Leo.

This makes no sense. There's lots of stuff like this; it's not just the mispronunciations.

Waco Kid

>>By way of analogy George N. has mostly wonderful pronunciation<<

Chad -- you don't hear Noory's mush mouth at work? It's kinda funny. Whenever it's a word that he's unsure of how to say, he sort of puts a French spin on it and tries to make it sound classy. Or something like that.

Don't get me started on "phenomenon" vs. "phenomena." Almost no one gets that right. Same deal for criterion/criteria, data/datum and medium/media. It's really a problem. I'm not sure why climate change is getting all the attention.

I agree on him missing follow-up questions. Fortunately for us, he instead will ask a question which was just answered by the guest.  ;D

You can tell he's hardly paying attention. You can hear him tapping away on his computer, probably playing on the Internet. But I digress...

Right on, TCK. Some of the writing is pretty bad.

Solarian

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who can't stand him. To be honest, I think he's bordering Noory level annoyance.

And we've come full circle.  ;D

Yup. That's what I'M talkin' about.

Chad Jacobs

Well obviously you have a problem with him on this issue so others probably feel the same.  Hopefully, he will be able to improve this aspect of his performance, without losing the elements that I and others appreciate.  As an aside I actually do believe that George N. has improved over the years at least sporadically.  I heard him interview a doctor last week who had written a book about microbial life, and it was an excellent interview.  However, the bottom line is that he is much like me and my fitness attempts. Although, I spend two hours in the gym on my days off, eat healthy, and take OTC supplements, I'm still a fairly pudgy, 46 year old. Hugh Jackman probably doesn't work out that much more than me, and he looks like a god it's largely about talent and genetics (okay illegal T, and HGH probably play a role as well). Art Bell, is like a once in a generation talent, while Knapp, Schrader, and others would at least make the cover of Men's Fitness. George on the other hand could be any of the other forty something guys that I see in the gym every night.

Chad, can I get your personal phone number, bro?

I don't listen that closely. I don't care that much. For the most part MIDT is a good time. Green witch mean time... already forgotten about.

SredniVashtar

I was listening to one of them the other day and he had a report about Mark Dice telling people they had found the Loch Ness Monster and were keeping it in captivity. I don't know if any of you have had the misfortune to come across this idiot, but he is the world's biggest asshole and does videos just to make himself look smart at the expense of other people. I have never seen someone so desperate to get noticed than this guy.

Waco Kid

That segment did strike me as a little nasty to the trusting "victims."

Chad -- well said. Funnily said, in fact. I share your pain.

Onan -- agreed that MITD is super great overall. I just hope they fix this one glitch.

csummers

I find the news segment is too loud compared to the rest of the show. I have to dive for the volume button when it comes on to turn it down and then when art and his guest are back on i cant hear them.
Its not the content as much as its the volume for me that ruins it. But I would be happy to see the  news segment go away permanently. I have to decide to keep the volume so low i can hardly hear art, but the news segment is not too loud or turn art up and then put up with a blaring loud news segment.
Listen to the show with the new priest talking about father martin and you will see what i mean. Art and him are both talking softly doing a great interview and suddenly the news segment blares away.
Be fantastic if there was an option to download the show without the news segment as it adds nothing to the show in my opinion. Or turn it down so the loudest part of the show is not the worst part. Having it so much louder than the rest of the show makes it hard to enjoy the show always reaching for the volume control to turn that news guy down to normal level.

Come on, for a computer algorithm generated voice he does fairly well. Certainly better than the Norry legacy version in terms of pronunciation and lisps.  And even us humans ponder why certain sports teams (basketball and football) are pronounced "Cell-ticks" but when we start talking about the tribe it, suddenly over the past decades, has become pronounced "KELL-tics" or "KELTs?"

Har. There's a British accented voice on some DMRN promo or commercial that I know is computer generated because I've used it.

It's Celts, not Celtics, whichever way you pronounce it. Leo's fuck-ups are are varied and wondrous. Like I said, it's not all mispronunciations. I would say they're worse than Norry because Leo only gets 5-10 minutes a night and he fudges just about everything possible. They used to have interns reading the news in the late night hours on Dave's old station, KTRS, and even they weren't this bad.

^^^^^^THIS A MILLION TIMES^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Wintermute

Upon further listening, this dude doing the "News" is a train wreck.

If these are pre-recorded, why the heck aren't they edited to remove all the flubs? If they are done live... why?

It's a fun idea but I fear it is getting worse not better.

It makes you wonder if he is doing it on purpose. I think part of the problem is that because it is so heavily edited to take out the breath pauses it sounds weirdly artificial. I can hardly imagine that he sounds like that on purpose. As someone said earlier, the flubs make you wonder whether we are listening to some brilliant meta-parody, because it is embarrassingly Nooryesque otherwise. Also, it just disturbs the flow of the show, and it's an odd thing for Art to countenance when even the bumper music is selected  by him with care to match the topic of the show, or even to provide some sly commentary on the quality of a guest. These news segments - as well as being poorly delivered and boring - are also way off-topic.

He must be a graduate of the George Noory school of broadcasting. Do a half assed job because who gives a rat's ass anyway?

Green witch instead of Greenwich

Andulshia instead of Andalucia (an- da- lu- see- ah). Hell, just to ham it up, I would have pronounced it An-da-lu-thia (Spanish from Spain pronounce the "s" sound like "th".)

AppealPlay

At first the mistakes didn't bother me and I still don't care about it myself however I think it makes Art's show look bad.  I feel like Leo doesn't spend enough time producing his clips.  It's very amateurish.  I feel like he needs to slow down and review his pieces before he sends them in.

Thome people are thuch show-offs. Actually, that's not true, you're thinking of 'z's. It was supposed to have come about because a Spanish king had a speech impediment and all the courtiers copied him, and the thing spread.

Here we go. Listen, don't take my word for it your highness. Google people from Spain talking and listen. They sound like they all pronounce the "s" sound like "th" not "z" , regardless of what speech impediment the King had.

No, the voiceless dental fricative (as phoneticians call it) is heard in the Spanish language by the pronunciation of the 'z' sound. The sibilant 's' actually sounds similar to English but a little sploshier. If you hear a Spaniard say the word for 'left' - 'izquierda', they give it that lisping sound you hear. Likewise a name like 'Ruiz' has that lisping sound at the end. I don't know if that story about the king is apocryphal but it is the one I heard.

I always find Google is a bit of a trap for semi-educated smartasses. Not that I am calling you even 'semi' educated.

Still, anything else you'd like me to school you on, I'd be happy to help.  :)

I'm glad you're here to save the day when it didn't need saving.  ;)

Yes, I agree.  He comes across as not having much of a formal education, so even a self-review of his pieces beforehand wouldn't make a difference.  He should stick to writing the news and hire someone with a more sophisticated vocabulary to actually read the para-news.

I don't think you need much education to read a few pieces into a microphone. Half the anchors you see on the TV obviously don't have the slightest clue what they are reading but manage to make it sound at least lucid. It's just a skill that you acquire with practice, I don't think education or intelligence is necessarily a prerequisite. DMN just reeks of laziness to me, and an unwillingness to do more than the bare minimum. I'm surprised Art has let him get away with it for so long, he doesn't seem like one of nature's fool-sufferers.

I somewhat agree with you in principle, however, a broad, formal education can familiarize one with consistent, correct word pronunciation and geopolitical nomenclature.

True. That way he would have heard of Andalucia and Greenwich and would have known proper pronunciation.

In Spain, the "z", "ce", and "ci" are pronounced with a "th" sound.  Examples: cebolla (onion) is pronounced "theboya", gracias (thanks)= grathias, zebra= thebra.
