Yes.  To me, a website should look and act the same in any browser, just like a franchise looks and acts the same whether it's on a mountain or in a valley.  Oh well.
LOL - Yes it should, but it's a problem web-designers have been dealing with since the advent of graphic browsers.  ;)
That's why M$ Expression - a web design freeware - had a preview function where you could view your code in different browsers to check the layout and formatting. (All browsers layout differently w/ the same code.)

I didn't know I could change the OS on a laptop.  I already got off my a** and returned/exchanged it twice bec of defective.  I don't think they'll let me exchange it a third time just bec the OS crashes a lot & emails get sent before I'm done typing. To my landlord and boss.  Time to disable tap-select again.
It's your lappy that you bought and paid for - correct ?  (...or a Christmas gift ?)
If you're on the brink of homelessness, then it's time to run the 'Free' route.
It's your property, do with it what thou wilt.
I wouldn't go directly to an install, hence my previous recommendation to burn a live disk.
If your lappy doesn't have a disk drive (netbook or newer laptop,) burn it to a USB drive. You can pick up a 16 GB drive for about $10. (I'd recommend SanDisk - and stay away from PNY, as they are highly susceptible to ESD (Electro-Static-Discharge) which causes catastrophic failure. )

Note: A live disk (not USB) will run slower than when the distro is installed.
Make sure you set the machine to boot from the cd / usb, in the BIOS / EUFI.

https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-boot-from-a-usb-device-2626091

Once again, I'm going to recommend VUU-DO, because the  download size is tiny (If you're bandwidth limited,) - 347.1 MB, and it's extremely stable.

(Don't forget to go into the BIOS / EUFI and enable legacy support.)
https://neosmart.net/wiki/enable-legacy-boot-mode/

Burn it to disk, or USB.   https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14912/create-a-persistent-bootable-ubuntu-usb-flash-drive/
(The article above is for Ubuntu, but should work on all Debian derivatives like VUU-Do.)
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/help/guide/step3
(I've only included the (directly above) link because others may use this info for other purposes.)  ;)

Boot to the new (live) OS, and play with it to your hearts' content.
(Assume the changes you do in the live system will not persist when you power down.)

Fire up synaptic and download a browser.  ;D

If you want a graphic firewall interface, download   gufw.  (search in synaptic) or

'   apt install gufw   '     <enter>
    (It's only 261 KB)

This is a basic system. (unless you DL-ed the maximal version with PaleMoon Browser,) but all the basic functionality is there - it's just different than Doze.  ;)

There are other speed tweaks that will drop down the boot time (by approximately 2/3) and instantly launch programs - even large ones, but I'll save those for the _LINUX_ thread, sometime in the future.   ;)

Oh, this is a 'right-click' driven OS. Menus, control features, and other goodies pop up on right click. It takes some getting used to but is very handy and has a shallow learning curve.
The default for Virtual Destops is 1 Desktop. I find that 4, are very useful, and once you become accustomed to them - especially on a laptop / netbook, they become indispensable. (Check my screenshot a few posts back.)
To change the # of Desktops,  right click on any open desktop space to bring up the context menu and GoTo    (Configuration Header) Settings  >  Openbox Configuration Manager  >  Desktops    and set the   '   Number of Desktops   '  to what ever # you want.
(You can also rename them from there, although the renaming process is a bit quirky - double click the name and type in the new one, then you have to click off the highlight to get it to take.  Quirky, but it works.)

Damn long post, but I hope it helps.
(Just follow the above, general proceedure, for any distro you want to try.)

...
Several hours and several different MS agents later and still no resolution, I turned to a friend who is a MS accredited bod who tried what he could but deduced after some time that I had to clean install Windows, which we did from a USB stick he had. This of course wiped everything, but had to be done. I then went through the lengthy procedure of him downloading drivers for me and installing them on my machine, and eventually I got to the stage of being able to install programmes I needed..Thankfully I'd not yet deleted any of the 100's of photos from the flashcards for the camera so I didn't have a complete breakdown.

When I had spoken to the agents on the phone I was told by one of the managers that they were fielding thousands of calls (hence the long wait to talk to anyone) from a lot of people who had had screwed up computers and he wasn't best pleased as (in his words) "The developers have written this with little thought to how it will be received" which I though remarkably candid.  I've since read on MS's own forum that many have had completely trashed machines including fried mother boards but many others have spent several dozens of dollars getting things back to a working machine.

I then went online and asked a MS guru to help me put in the update that had screwed up my laptop, and he told me something (after I had let him remote access) that was never mentioned before the update..The screw up occurred because the BIOS hadn't been updated. After accessing it, he then went through installing the update but I noticed he changed certain things already there from the clean install which I couldn't possibly have known about needing. It installed okay but I'm still not satisfied with things since then.

It crashes randomly, it is dog slow and hangs regularly (I regularly clear temp files etc), and is just not the same as it was. I have since the episode turned off updates because I simply don't trust things to be any better. MS have no interest in doing anything else but push out updates they have no interest in knowing if they work or not. The argument is that there are so many different configurations of computer they can't possible keep up and make sure they all work, but that isn't a valid excuse. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
Sounds to me like the SPECTRE / Meltdown update botched the system.   :(
There still might be a chance to recover some of your data if it's not overwritten to badly.
(I wish you'd have posted before you went through the whole rig-a-ma-roll of re-installing, because then you could have recovered all your important data. )  :(
If you had a (Linux) live disk handy, all your files could have been transferred to an external drive - even if you couldn't boot into Doze.
Depending on how overwritten your SSD / HDD is, there is still a chance to get those files back.

Not to my knowledge. This study was prior to SSDs becoming affordable and mainstream. Probably 2011 or so.

Those kind of studies are like porn to me.  Did Google publish anything about SSDs?  The trajectory seems to be them replacing disk drives somewhere down the road, but I recall the joke about gallium arsinide being the future of semiconductors -- always has been, always will be.  If Google isn't doing the same kind of study on SSDs, that would be interesting indeed.
Mine was purchased in January and seemed great for a few months.  It's not bad - especially now that I'm not using MS Edge.

Yes, the laptop was an open-box exchange from clearance at Best Buys (my first time in, ever!).  I exchanged it because Dell's longtime defective space bars (unbeknownst to me prior) are causing milliions of American carpal tunnel and financial ripoffs.  So, the exchange here has been better lately now that I stopped using MS Edge.

Dear, I wouldn't go into bios unless my life depended on it.  Didn't even know laptops had that.  I am a tablet girl.  I did take some computer hardware and software classes in 2011.  One of the best things I ever did.  But anyhow.

Thank you for the warning me about PNY and failures due to static.  Good to know.  I am a walking, talking static electricity magnet.  My poor cat.  I've got to remember to discharge before petting her.

It's good to be reminded of Linux.  This is all a bit beyond my grasp though.  But it reminds me I need to try installing Libre Office again.  Thanks for pointing me toward those kinds of things.

If you ever get inspired to try Linux, I suggest that you don't use something like VUU-DO.  That's a specialized variety of Linux that aims for a bare-bones, stripped down operating system.  It has its usefulness, but not with someone in your position.

I would instead suggest Linux Mint.  The look and feel is similar to Windows 7, so it is easier transition for someone used to Windows.

Find someone who is technology-savvy, and ask him to download a copy and put it on a USB, and live boot it on his laptop.  You can play around with it a bit, and see what you think.  Meanwhile the guy will feel like a manly-man for helping out a chick in need, which is good for him.  It's win-win.  Who knows, if you ask the right guy, Cupid may draw his bow, and you'll be fucking like two weasels in a gunny sack before you can say "Bob's your uncle."

I'm liking this plan.  Please take photos and share with the rest of the class.

I can understand your incredulity -- let's face it, has Sneddy ever been right about anything? -- but yes, I used the FearBoysWithBugs handle at one time.  It was back when MV was swingin' the ban hammer recklessly and -- in my view -- unjustly.  DPS seemed like a goner, and armed with nothing more than determination and a TOR browser, I was able to sneak a new handle in under his nose.

Thankfully, MV has been rehabilitated, and so long as he continues to keep his nose clean, FBWB need be nothing more than a fond memory.

There was a cat that used to hang around my house.  The back end of the cat barely functioned.  It had apparently been hit by a car (they don't slow down for pets in the road here).  It propelled itself around with its front legs while mostly dragging the back ones behind it.  We used to leave food out for it so that it didn't starve.  It didn't move around much, as you might expect.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bestiality_in_the_United_States  The acts are a felony in many states, and a misdemeanor in many.  It is a crime in about 46 states.  Often, men who do this also abuse the animals in cruel ways.  Seen some traumatizing stories in the news.  I suspect that if they hadn't been cruelly physically abusive, the law would be more lenient.  It was after a very heinous crime was in the news that some states (at least mine) enacted legislation against bestiality for the first time.
