It doesn't take much to make a human hallucinate.  Even sleep deprivation can make a completely sane person's brain do some unexpected things.  The lack of empirical evidence is telling.

Well, you could get quite philosophical and look at it as the manifestation of universal archetypes (Jung). I suspect the phenomena is not independent of us. In some strange way, humanity may be creating it.
