Art Bell's return has terrestrial radio rethinking night time

The first week of Art Bells return has caused many terrestrial broadcasting companies rethinking their current night time line up, usually night radio brought on reruns from the day or 2nd to 3rd rate shows at night, things changed when Art Bell and coast to coast came around, the high paying day time advertisers started booking spots at night on Arts show, also the advertising rates went up at night, currently coast to coast is considered junk status, meaning stations are barely make advertising bucks to keep the lights on.

Art Bell is not a new product, he is a tried tested and proven product, so the stations know what they are getting.
There has been turmoil the first week, CFRB 1010 was the first in Canada to jump on running Art Bell, many stations are choosing the wait and see options, I have a friend in the broadcasting business and they were saying you don't have 30 days to figure this out, its act now or forget it because the opportunity will be gone.

Can you explain that last statement about not having 30 days to figure this out?  What opportunity will be gone?

Its a monthly ratings thing they have, you would want to see what the listenership would be and if the numbers work.

Yeah, I understand ratings and their importance to a radio station.  Still don't get the bit about the opportunity being gone and 30 days.  Is the point that if a station in a specific market waits a full rating cycle (30 days?) to see the numbers, another station in that market will have already signed on with Art's show?

Between streaming, podcast and terrestrial radio Art is probably already a top ten radio show in terms of listeners in North America. What's crazy is as different contracts run out and this model is proven over the next year, there's no limit to the amount of success this radio show and DMRN could experience.

We could also see DMRN launch another show on terrestrial that grew a grass roots audience like Art did in a few years.

I love what they're doing. This is the perfect solution to how terrible talk radio has been since 9/11 and the perfect way to break the corporate hold on commercial radio. There was only three people on the planet who could have done this. Stern, Limbaugh and Art.

Yes, I should have listed that, and it has already happened, note this type of situation is not that common, but it also shows who is on the ball.

A variation on the old "you snooze you lose" concept.  Still would be a tough call for program directors knowing Art's history.  Guess that's why they make the big bucks.

Thanks

Absolutely.  Being that Art has quit SEVEN times in his career, If I was a producer, I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

No one listens to Stern anymore lol.  His show is only funny when there's funny people around him, now they're all gone.

If you were a producer in a communications industry, you surely would have learned how to use English correctly by then.

Go change your mom's diaper.

It's still valid--unlike your subsequent point.

I feel the moment is upon us. The news that a Bloomington, IL station (92.9) has dumped Coast for Art means that someone has already figured it out. Grass roots, baybee. 🌸Bella🌸

There is really only one good talk network for my area in St George, and I am seriously putting consideration into asking them about the possibility of joining the AM broadcast. They have Snoorge on but they've covered his first hour with other shows for several years now.
