I'm in WV too. I've heard one of those booms a few years ago. It even shook the ground.

Thought it was dynamite from a nearby strip mine, but realized it came from another direction. It was almost dark, too. They usually blast only during the day.

It made the local news, but nobody had an explanation.

Strange.

Could these booms be due to fracking?

I think the booms are caused by the freezing of the crust. And when it moves a bit, it cracks the frozen part like a giant limb cracking in winter.
