Archiving midnight in the desert

Hey guys,

As you know I really like collecting Art Bell shows. I'll be archiving both the mp3 and aac stream each night, and I'd like to make sure a few others will be too. I know there will be a podcast, but I'd like to capture the show as it airs.  Anybody else going to join me? :)

Just to be transparent here .. If you want to record all of the MiTD shows and put them on a hard drive somewhere and hold onto them while Art builds another empire which grows to millions of listeners nightly and then he's paid billions for his network and then the buyer sells the show to another network that hires some flunky schill to replace Art after he retires about 10 times and maybe even if he dies after another 29 years on the air... and Keith says he ain't selling his recordings .. then I don't think I would have a problem with you putting together another Ultimate-est Archive. And BTW - thanks again for the first one.  ;D

Well if it's for your private and personal use I believe that's already been covered by the FCC and the Supreme Court over 35 years ago.
It covered the right of early VCR owners to record shows from broadcast stations and Cable TV. Since most of us get our internet service over Cable companies it would be hard to stop you. And if your lucky enough to be near a flamethrowing AM station broadcasting the show, you can record it onto ancient cassette tape! That is if you have one of those great GE AM/FM Cassette Player Recorders.
I see those great old behemoths at Vinnie's and Goodwill every once in a while. They were optimized for AM reception.
For me I go on duty at midnight, don't get up till 11:15 PM so I'll be downloading the show with my subscription onto my cellphone memory card and listen to it while I'm on patrol. Instead of that Carnivora pitchman on "Commercial to Commercial" AM!

I'm sure other people will end up joining you. Will have no problems finding MiTD shows on youtube or torrent sites. That is where a lot of people will get a hold of the show. After all that is were most of us located our copies of old Art Bell shows. It beat paying Premier Rats "pennies a day to access past shows".

I'll be hording the podcasts, but not so likely to record any streams.

If someone is paying to support the show and keeping any recordings (podcast or stream) to themselves, I don't see the problem.

The real benefit to doing any of this archival, I think, is for when the show is no longer available or is locked behind some evil radio conglomerate's paywall.

i will be doing the same. and i will pay the $5/month to help art , so he can make more shows.
so if you record the show, keep it to yourself until art decides to not do the show anymore.  do not stream, youtube, torrent, or otherwise share the shows, until art decides to really retire (ie he passes over to the other side).

I'll be paying the monthly fee for a while and probably downloading the podcasts as well. Notice that I used the word "Archiving" in the title, this is for preservation of the show. I'd like it to be available somewhere in its raw format for future fans to enjoy. I won't be sharing these files though.

I figured your intent was nothing but good. I'm sure most of us totally agree with you-- just wanted to give the evil eye to potential pirates.

Doctor Who is a great example of why personal archives are nice. The BBC lost/wiped a bunch of early episodes, and the only reason they've been able to patch together anything is from tapes or films saved by private citizens or the occasional affiliate station.

Keeping a backup copy to ensure this work stays alive is one heck of a tribute to the talent.

But Art and Keith want us here to watch for those pirate sites and report them immediately so Keith can get them shut down, its our sacred Art Bell duty since its important to have lots of paying subscribers to support the show and network if we want new Art Bell shows for years to come...

Me too
Keep in mind that we are supposed to keep the pirates at bay not become one of them. Think of it like a copyrite on a song. You can play it for yourself but cannot sell, give or trade it away.
Downloading podcast as a member.......good
Listening......good
Re-Streaming or re-posting.........BAD!

Archiving the "Redacted" interview as I type this.

I think the Time Traveler podcasts will be good enough for me to save. The thought of also saving a copy of the stream so that I get bumper music is appealing, but frankly it's a pain in the ass.

ChandlersDad

I have been an Art Bell listener since I was a little kid in the 90's. I recorded them off the radio onto cassette tapes. Later, I subscribed and simply downloaded the shows. I took many of the cassette shows and downloaded them onto my hard drive, and created a large set of CDs.

I assume that as long I as do not try to SELL THEM, I am legally within my rights.

But I would not want to record a live stream, since I have no fondness for the commercials.

By the way, with all due respect, if you are going to include a picture of yourself (as I do) as your avatar, PLEASE PUT YOUR SHIRT ON.  >:(

DanTSX

I just paid my $5 to be a "time traveler" :-\

... have you met Michael?

henge0stone

If he really does m-f five dollars for 20 shows isn't bad. I can't wait for them to be pirated I'll just pay and throw them into the archive. I suggest everyone do the same.

SaucyRossy

Art and Keith have stressed just how important it is to NOT pirate this show. It doesn't make any sense to do it when a time traveller membership is so cheap!

I agree about preserving these shows with music intact to enjoy again, just to beat a dying horse, these need to be kept private and not be released at all while the show is still live. It would be cool if there was a way to trade these with people with confirmed subscriptions but you probably cant do that without either having people lie about there subscription, or if it was by proof only, puting Art at risk of trouble for sharing the music, so too bad:( But carry on guys.

I did a reverse image search. Are you really Marc Fitt? You have quite a following. It would be amaaaaazing if you could mention Art on your official FaceBook or Twitter!  :P FOR THE BLITZ!!!!

There is a reason for active members to pirate and that's the lack of music on the archives. Shows are on at 4 in the morning for me, so I can't participate  sadly as they go live. Art himself almost quit doing this because he felt so strongly about music creating the mood, and I agree. Every other Podcast I subscribe to manages to include the music.

Agreed, there's plenty of ways to record the show on your own though.  It not Art's fault, but the whiny crybaby penny chasers in the music business.  They've put out nothing but garbage for the last 20+ years and now they're looking for any way possible to scrape up some cash lol.
Screw them.

These seething locusts from BMI actually drive around to small businesses to try to bully them into paying royalty fees for simply having a radio on or a CD.  Many of them have been chased off by force according to this article LOL:

I would record it but 4 am is just too awkward. Pretty disappointed that the first time I hear Art the Chase was cut out. For me it's enough to cancel my account. Have more then enough podcasts to listen to and as much as I love Art not too happy with the way the fanbase is going.

He's 70, Hoagies in his 70's, same with LMH and quite a few of the old regulars. Needs to be new blood. I think Art was quite supportive of Ian who for me was nearly in the same league. This nonsense about Redacted in a area where there really needs to be new voices is insane. What happens when Art retires? Coast seems to dredge it's hosts from the boiling pits of sewage and while there is other decent hosts none have the listenership Art can manage. I think it's admirable he's helping new voices and open lines is probably the place to do it. Keep trying new hosts, get them some experience so in the future we are not stuck with the new Noory.

AZZERAE

Downloading files from the archives as a Time Traveler is really difficult. It takes about 10 minutes to download an mp3, and the "Download" button doesn't work. It also sucks that Art's intro and bumpers are completely cut from the podcast. I know, I know, here I am with the whine-whine-whine bitch, bitch moaning... but seriously. What the fuck?!

Has anyone else had luck downloading the files as a Time Travelers?  I can't get a download to initiate.

Dr Who

Took me 3 seconds for each hour the only fault I can find is the bumper music is not listed
