Omg how am I just now learning about this. Thanks to you and morgus for being the great record keepers.

No doubt, I'm a freaking metalhead and I have never run across this before.

This would explain Hoagie's comment about him and Robin being in a "heavy heavy metal club": Tholus was a death metal band based out of the SF Bay area in about 2007.  Their album release, "Constant", was inspired by...Richard C Hoagland.  Every track on the album has audio clips of RCH included in the music, with permission given by RCH.

What does the RCH death metal genre sound like?  Here you go...

Further on the surprisingly musical RCH, someone on open lines needs to ask him about the purported Columbia Records deal he and his siblings once had as a rock opera band.  No fooling. :D

You've been holding out on us Lonevoice.

THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST DEATH METAL ALBUMS EVER RECORDED!
These guys are totally unheard of but if you like Death Metal just buy it. Sickest drums you'll ever hear and nice fat riffage. There's a fair bit of odd timing and a couple of jazzy sections, bass solos all over th place, crazy guitar solos from Kevin Kmetz...
but the drums is where it's at! Anyone who is impressed by all these Death Metal drummers haven't heard Dave Murray, he's an insane jazz master and absolutely the best fro Death Metal. Like a less agressive John Longstreth (Origin) or Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) with more jazz. Pisses all over everybody!

QuoteIn planetary nomenclature, a tholus (pl. tholi) is a small domical mountain or hill.[1][2] The word is from the Greek θόλος, tholos (pl. tholoi),[3] which means a circular building with a conical or vaulted roof.[4]

Oh cool, the antikythera mechanism guest is on tonight. Professor Edmunds looks to be quite credible on physics and astronomy too.

Morgus

Looks like the guest who was originally scheduled for last week is back on the schedule for tonight:

Mon Aug 31 â€" Prof. Mike Edmunds

I listened to RCH a few times last week when I could not get to sleep (or woke up).  Holy cow, he's actually good.  I purchased the monthly subscription today so I can get the older episodes.  I had no idea he was so good - and enjoyable to listen to.  I hate to say it but today I had to pick from an older AB episode or an RCH and I decided on RCH.  Don't kill me!

It's all good.  I love Art, but, I'm fine listening to him from the archive.  I personally prefer RCH live.  The reason is the people who post in this thread.  :)   It's a good time overall and there's a zero tolerance policy for bullshit.  (Hoagie's exemp BTW  ;))

Post often!  Club 19.5  8)

Yeah but your guys' guesses are going to be a lot closer to the truth, so in the absence of the evidence you're waiting for they're still valuable.  One could argue that the dearth of informed speculation leaves more room for wild theories.  For example, I'd love to know some real scientist's idea about that thing Hoagie was talking about that looked like a jello mold that crawled out of the crater right next to it.

Unfortunately, I'm not on the Dawn @Ceres team, so I don't know what's being discussed (and probably couldn't say if I did).  Knowing how scientists generally think, though, because this is so weird (in that we don't see stuff like it elsewhere, at least not of this size), then that means they REALLY don't want to share speculation until they have solid evidence backing it up.  Not only would it fuel conspiracies ("Scientists change their minds!") if one of the proposed speculations is shown to be wrong with later data, fellow scientists may also rip them a new one if they propose something without evidence.

I saw this first-hand with something seemingly basic with New Horizons when we said a maximum age for Sputnik Planum was ~100 million years, where several colleagues outside the team sent angry e-mails a few hours later protesting and disputing that age.

Not only that, but on stuff like this, unfortunately, NASA likes to control the press release cycle (as in the timing of when information is released, not the content) and if the scientists did have good evidence for one model over others, for something like this that's captured the public's attention, NASA would likely want to embargo it until they could do a nice li'l press conference or at least release about it.  It's unfortunate from a public relations side of not releasing the information when we have it, and many of us scientists are fully aware and lament that it fuels conspiracy theories about NASA hiding information.

Which answers your other statement about the dearth of informed speculation leaving room for wild ideas.  For some people, it does.  But official explanations have never stopped other conspiracists / anomalists.  This is very simply illustrated by Richard and Keith:  They say that this "pyramid" structure is an arcology, given the lack of official statements by the scientists.  Similarly, they say that the ice mountains on Pluto are arcologies, despite the several official statements by the scientists.

...Had to look it up in google images. I thought it was French Stewart when I first saw it.

I would have never made that connection in a million years but by golly you're right! He's Buster's doppelganger, for sure.  ;)
