Dennis Miller: ...and he is outta here!

Apparently, his show has come to an end(babe) and it's barely registered ripple. Interesting guy, but increasingly a footnote. Heard his show a few times in the past few months and he seemed disengaged.

I don't think he has the fire that he once did.  Once a screaming liberal, he changed his tune 'a bit' around 9/11.

About the same time I did the same conversion

9/11 definitely affected him, but he'd been drifting toward center/right since the early 90's. I remember his HBO special from March of '93 and he was railing against toward that relatively new term "political correctness". By '96, he still strongly disliked paleo-cons, but seemed to embrace liberatarian views as he noted his growing disdain of Clinton.

I thought he was an incredible stand up in the late 80's/early 90's, his 1990 HBO special "Black and White" was great. But indeed that fire dimmed throughout the years. That CNBC failure seemed to embitter him a bit.

I`m going to miss DM (or, the other guy from Pittsburgh) on the radio. I generally catch at least some of his show most days -- he has great guests. I reckon his humor doesn`t resonate with a lot of folks. Sure did with me. Now I am left to wonder what will become of Norm McDonald.

I wish Norm had the drive to replace Dennis, but he doesn't. Seems like getting him to do a once a week podcast is a chore.

DM was the best at obscure pop culture referencing, but some would sail far over callers(and occasional guests) heads and I'd feel bad for him.

I thought Dennis Miller has sucked ever since he stopped doing Weekend Update on SNL, but honestly I never saw nor heard much of his work after that.

I remember Miller talking about the flack he was receiving from various parties about his use of coarse language in his shows while claiming to be a Christian.

I think this was on the '93 HBO show, but unsure.

To paraphrase:

"Some people confront me, 'Dennis, you claim to be a Christian, yet you use certain vulgar words in your act that you shouldn't. Don't you think that's a problem?'

"To answer that, I do believe in God, and I do profess to be a Christian.

(comedic pause)

"It just so happens that my god thinks I'm fucking funny."

He's a bonged-out old hippie who tried to reinvent himself as a conservative.  Boring and mostly incoherent.

"Black and White" was great. I still quote from that standup.

He got extremely polarizing in the 2000s and he was one of the most ardent Bush supporters on the planet. Not really interested in listening to his politics.

I read somewhere that his major shift to the right came from when he was sports casting in the early 2000s (or possibly earlier), and the other notable colleague of his (whose name I don't know) changed Miller's views after the two had lengthy conversations. Details are sketchy, read that probably eight years ago.

He'd be better with a show 1 hour a week. Host The Factor one night a week. A daily radio show for several hours a day isn't his forte. Maybe he can fill in host coast to coast.  ;D

As for 911, it changed a lot of people. They realized the bury your head in the sand approach to foreign policy feels good but doesn't work.

Wouldn't surprise me if Al Michaels was an influence on him during their time together on Monday Night Football. Michaels isn't overtly political, but his appearances on Stern in the mid 90's hinted that he was probably right-leaning at very least.

He was ahead of his time by 10 years. I remember he would have these long windup jokes that required you knew pretty much everything about 70s TV and celeb gossip.

He airs out west from 9pm to midnight (recorded) so when Art announced he was coming back, I thought it might be Cumulus looking for a Miller replacement. Another poster informed me it was unlikely as Miller's show is actually in the day out east. He also linked me Miller's replacement-I can't remember the name but he is a Chicago radio talent.

I think you're right, there. As far as I know, Miller has had two stints in the realm of sports, so I think that must be it. I'd actually like to re-read that article, to see if what I'm adding to the discussion is worth anything.

and this is a drunk post at this point  :o

Ha! Yes.  It's pretty bad when you become an O'Reilly sycophant.

Dennis Miller just got tired of working with all the Radio Execs.  He is now free to do podcasts with Adam Carolla.  Good move I think.  I would only catch the end of his shows before Jim Bohannon came on.

I like Miller because he will slide in some obscure shit that only an English major with a minor in philosophy might catch and appreciate on the first run through of the joke

It's actually pretty funny podcast. I've listened to it.

The obscure was his niche. Even though I identify with "Dennis 2.0" politically more than "Dennis 1.0", Dennis 2.0 just wasn't that funny to me. His show was a little to boy's club. He was increasingly irritable. And frankly he didn't talk politics very well. So I was happy for the change on the local AM dial.

Locally Glenn Beck was cut years ago. Limbaugh was cut down to 2 hours. And now Millar is gone. And I don't live on the west coast, so things are looking up!

NXOEED

Ah, bummer. I had no idea. I haven't listened in years (he was dropped by his Phoenix affiliate around '09), but I liked the show. I'll check out the podcast.
