Horrific Child Neglect Case Rocks Snohomish County

Since George often mentions morbid, sensational  cases involving children and animals, this one will probably come up tonight.  John Carlson dealt with it this morning. He says, "this is why I don't support legalizing drugs" (Since drugs are almost certainly involved here--it has the hallmarks of meth parenting styles and the mother had been in drug court in 2009).  But meth isn't marijuana, meth is already illegal, so what point is he trying to make?

I don't know why that link didn't come out right.  But if you type in heraldnet.com, its right on the front page.

"The woman graduated from drug court in 2009."  Hell of a graduation.

At least they now have a chance at a life... not a great chance, granted, but a better chance than they had.

probably looks great on a resume.

The "parents" are absolute scumbags. Apparently, the grandmothers are as well. John Carlson also reported that both the maternal and paternal grandmothers knew about the situation and refused to cooperate with police. One grandmother owns the house they trashed and locked the kids in, and the other grandmother was living in the camper on the property which was dumping raw sewage into the creek behind the house. I hope to hell CPS never allows the kids back in this "family" but I don't hold out much hope, since they were already quite familiar with this family and the kids were left in their care.  >:(

Now the latest is that the mother is pregnant.

Their names and pictures were in the print edition of the Herald today.

I know that what I am about to say is rash, but I honestly believe that there are a handful of people that judges should order sterilized, and this woman may be one.  I know that this is is a civil liberties slippery slope and people are rightfully worried about abuses, but it's kind of like the death penalty--dole it out sparingly to the worst of the worst, with protections in place.

Sterilize her?  I'd shoot her in the head and dump her in a crate of cats destined for a landfill.

On a somewhat related topic, the Herald did a survey and was fairly surprised to learn that 68% of respondents supported involuntary sterilization.

I think that it's important to point out something that a lot of people seems to be missing.  Sterilizing somebody like this woman, who has a proven track record of extremely bad parenting is different than the eugenicist schemes of sterilizing young people deemed defective who have not even had the chance to reproduce. In the first case, we are dealing with things that have already happened and specific people, in the second it's a whole segment of the population and hypotheticals.

Here in Snohomish County another horrific child neglect case on the Tulalip Reservation a couple of years ago is probably still fresh in peoples' minds. In that one, two little girls were strapped in car seats and left in a car for days.  One died of dehydration and exposure.  The mother's text messages indicated she'd been trying to score heroin while her daughters were in distress. I think she had some older children she'd lost custody of. Plus, there's been recent news that Snohomish Co., in particular , Everett and in particular, one neighborhood in Everett, have disproportionate heroin use. (I realize the case we're talking about is Lake Stevens,)

I thought it was interesting that this case was in the news the same time as the Jordanian airman who was set on fire.  you might say, "What have these got in common?"  But they were both stories that caused people to get fed up and say "We've had it up to here." Like the Herald piece said, the high percentage favoring sterilization reflects the terrible frustration that people feel over these awful stories.

We will see a lot more of this as we stupidly weaken anti-drug laws.  Drugs are more important than anything or anyone to drug addicts.
