The State of the (dis?)Union

So far fairly decent and what one would expect from a SOTU speech though not over I was shocked by a few things....
1) the lighting? Boehner looks even more reddish-orange than his usual orange. What is the source of this? Fake tanning, tanning spray, blood-pressure issues, drinking (that thing that infamously some Asians get with alcohol?) And Obama looks more yellowish-black than he used too (what did some blacks call in back in my DC days? High-yellow? The lighting was horrible and they should get some advice from the rock-n-roll industry or Hollywood.) Biden look normal so it is either the other people's lifestyle or makeup or the lighting.

2) the Mars thing. I'm sure this will get comments on C2C from Dr.Space or whoever that guest who is already was training to fly to Mars. But the astronaut looked suspiciously old (and slightly overweight) to spend the "year in space" test? Though that guest will be happy because I seem to recall he is in his 60's. I'm sure the guy shown was/is a great astronaut but, maybe it was the lighting or the camera adding the "extra 10" but he seemed oddly "non-astronaut like."

3) discussions of cyber-security and cyber-attacks. Come on. Our own government does worse with its systems of surveillance, healthcare databases, IRS, etc. To us! And even when used for benign purposes those systems get hacked (or info just taken by employees or political operatives) more easily than some Korean is "gonna git you."

- I will leave the comments on the politics, pipe-dreams, taxes, and delusions-of-grandeur to other threads or replies.

And mentioned castrating pigs. I kid you not (sorry that is goats. I piglet you not.) I knew it was SOME kind of sex porn fetish to it.....kabbuki.

LOL I just get so tired of the same bs. The dem stand the reps sit blah blah blah. In the end we the people keep getting the shaft. Neither party gives a shit about the people so why should the people care much less pay for a broken government. Would you pay for a brand new broken car? No. But nobody is willing to do shit about it so back to the bottle and the bag and watch the show!!1

I'm tired of the same bs too, but what choice do we have?  If we protest, we'll get arrested.  Nothing gets accomplished anymore, people just argue.  Arguing gets old quick, then we tune out, hoping politics never affect us directly.  The only choice us little people have is to shut up & go to bed & work another day.

sigh. Yep. I sometimes wonder if the relaxing of some drug laws for marijuana and ease of getting prescriptions to, at least in theory, help psychological/psychiatric problems is increasing and the dumbing down of media (who wants to read) and more porn, sports (viewing only please- lest you or your child gets hurt) and increasingly violent fighting games....SOMA, orgy porgy, gladiators games etc.

Don't get what you said, don't even know what I'm doing in this thread... I followed Zoo because he is so colorful.  Anywhoo, after listening to the speech, can't complain.

I thought this too but there has always been talk of sending older folks to Mars who don't plan to come back. I don't know if any official consideration has been given to this but it could be an explanation as to why they might want to study how well an older, unfit person adapts to weightlessness.

I hope so. I know there is a lot of planning/talk about cost issues and human cost issues but I think sending people, willingly obviously, into space, to Mars, to whereever would inspire people, ambitions, and maybe even bring people together (I know Norry, in all his always sunny attitude thinks it will come to Russians and Americans fighting each other in some capsule.)

I think even voting now is a complete and utter waste of time. When you are only aloud to vote for preapproved people what the fuck? Is that freedom? How dumb is the American people? Hell, what the fuck do you think Hong Kong was protesting? So when we sit here and think by voting we are going to change things it shows how fucking retarded we are as Americans. Until we the people or even better yet the III% are ready to spill blood on the streets of America nothing will get done besides corporations getting more powerful. So when you are talking politics all I hear hear is I am a weak little bitch who can do nothing unless Big Brother Tells Me I Can. Until then I must sit down and shut up like a good little citizens. Fuck this Government and anyone one who stands with or for them!!1

You couldn't be more wrong.  It's precisely this cynicism which keeps the status quo (and the conservative overlords who crave it) preserved in amber.

Only through greater interaction by the people will this misbegotten state of affairs ever change.

Apathy, such as the kind you promote in your message, fills the wealthy elite with joy (as much as they can ever experience it; it's more schadenfraude than true joy) because they revel in your despair (and feel secure in their station).

The franchise owned by every citizen is a precious right.  To ignore it is tantamount to treason (forgiven only because choosing not to choose is itself a right) and is a waste of every life sacrificed to protect these freedoms from the first minuteman at Lexington to the most recent casualty in Afghanistan.

Can you be so cynical as to ignore this most precious gift?  Maybe your vote may not "make a difference" but what about you and 100 friends?  What about organizing groups of like minded people to get out and vote?  What about starting at the local level and fighting to get someone you support on city council or the board of education?

Giving up and giving in will never help you win.

You do have a point.  That's why voting in the primaries is important - that's where the 'preapproved people' are preapproved.

If a person is concerned enough, they can find a candidate they like, or get one to run in a primary race, and go out and get others to support that person.

There were some good candidates at all levels in the Republican primaries in the recent election cycle, but the establishment Republicans lied about and smeared them - certainly those running for House and Senate seats, the state and national finance committees provided them no funds, and the Chamber of Crony Capitalism (aka Chamber of Commerce) bought and paid for the campaigns of the establishment candidates.

(As an aside, this is why the Republican 'leadership' in DC is going along with Obama on his massive spending, his illegal immigration scheme, and are not standing in the way or trying to repeal ObamaCare - despite their campaigning on these very issues just a couple months ago - the Crony Capitalists have bought and paid for the Republican Party in DC, and they favor lots of government spending, open borders, and ObamaCare).

Only a few were able to beat that stacked deck and win at the national level, but more would have won had more people paid attention during those primaries and voted for them.  Advertising and name recognition too often are all it takes to win - especially in the primaries, but it doesn't have to be that way

The guy who can't differentiate between your/you're and aloud/allowed is rather prone to drama.

We need ...

1) campaign finance reform
2) get control of defense spending. mil branches can't pass an audit. Marines only branch to even attempt an audit
3) We need to get health care costs under control. This part of the reason all those jobs disappeared.

Good to see Al Sharpton endorsing Obama's TAX plan...

Sharpton's quite wealthy, but why I do feel he's not concerned about paying his fair share. Or any share...

I will never be a Republican. But Al Sharpton guarantees I cannot be a Democrat, either. I refuse to be a part of anything where a degenerate scum like him is allowed to be a power broker.

Aw you found spelling/grammar errors 8) . Does this mean I can not go outside and play :( ? But, but I want to go outside :'( it is nice outside >:( !

I might not take the time to double check all my spellimg/:grammar; but I do know this. All anyone does is bicth and never does shit about it. Fuck man I was the same way. Now I have tried at least to do something now. Now maybe protesting and getting involved with certain groups to change something. Is not a lot in some people's book; it is something besides bicthing.

I tell you what if you get this done on a Federal or even State level.  I will leave whatever I am doing and rush to your side to help you. No matter the cost to me. I will even take a mother fucking bullet for you if need be. But what are the odds of that happening ;) . I mean it looks good on paper and even sounds great in speeches but action is what is needed not words!!1

I didn't bother listening last night-same old, same old.

Zoo- try Chris Hedges- you might find him interesting. I lean more towards the conservative POV but I am happy to listen to intellectually honest people from the "other side". Truth is- we need to find a way to join together or continue to lose our place in politics.

Do you think protesting and civil disobedience is the way to get this done?  I think it is only going to cause the government to throw more resources into developing a police state.  Some of us have chosen other ways to better society.  It's just not your way.

Now if you are going to do something in a state or federal level I do whatever it takes to help. Besides that it is nothing but wishful dreaming and you know this. Peaceful protesting does not work trust me. I have put more steps on concrete and grass than a normal person should and nothing ever got done. Not one fucking thing was accomplished that we set out to do besides going to jail. Fucking people Voting does nothing because the people in office do whatever they can to get rich. So then what do we do besides bicth?

Is it that we stop voting for Dem and Rep? How about people like you run for office? I will run and I got three felons, ex-con, and arrest record over three pages long. You think I got a chance; I can not even get a fucking job at McDonalds because of my record. But you know what that is nothing but a Fucking Excuse-right? [/font] So I tell you what the next fucking thing that comes up in my area I will run for it. What are you going to do brother!!1

Peaceful protesting does not do shit. Trust me on this I was a advocate for protesting and walked more miles an concrete and grass than most people will ever just walk in their life. The only then it really does is get you arrest and makes you feel like you are doing something productive. And you are right police have gotten worse and worse. Fuck just look at videos of cops kicking the shit out of people who are doing nothing wrong beside exercising their rights (what rights). I have actually seen someone get arrested for resisting arrest. Let me repeat that again THEY GOT ARRESTED FOR RESETTING ARREST  :o .... How the fuck is that even possible? No, really please inform me how this is possible?

I would love to change society for the better. And you do not have to see things my way by any means. Hell I do not want to see things my way. But I can not lie to my self nor can I just pretend things are changing when they are not. Show me in history were peaceful protesting/peaceful disobedience changed something relevant to a country? And then show me how many times war, military action, and violence has changed something relevant to a country, Oh and just because they did not call it a Military Coup does not mean it was not one.
I do not think we need a revolution in this country anymore but a evolution is exactly what we need.
This can not be done without starting over in my opinion!!1

Have you been in a coma? Do remember the state of the USA is Jan 2009 after eight years of conservatism? Drop the "all the same" sophistry.  There is a difference. A huge one.  Wanna see what this country will look like after another 20 years of Republican laissez faire?  Visit Chihuahua.

Well, there was Gandhi.  And Martin Luther King, Jr.  And Nelson Mandela in the latter years of the Apartheid regime to a certain extent.  Jesus Christ seems to have been influential over the years..  People's Power at the end of the Marcos regime

There are always scuffles, but from independence for East Timor, to the breakup of the Soviet Union, to the end of the communist governments in the Warsaw Pact nations, governments have been known to change without all out war.  Plenty of colonies were handed back without violence, as recently as Hong Kong and Macau.  I could go on...

Actually no, I don't.  The Conservatives were out of power from 1989 to the present, other than Gingrich running the House as Speaker for a few years during the Clinton Administration.

This is basic stuff, I don't know what part is eluding you.
