Satellite TV (not pay services)

I was looking into getting a satellite dish as a hobby.
Anyone have a satellite they use for free broadcasts and what is your opinion of it?
I was looking at C-band vs Ku-band dish.

Pretty interesting, I'll definitely follow this thread.  I don't even watch much TV, but free is great.

when I lived on Hawai'i (97-00)The satellite was knocked out that provided TV and for a couple years there was no Sat TV till Direct or the other one had a Sat. up to cover the Pacific. The Hilo branch of U of H put out a guide to convert the  dish to a radio telescope.

Are you talking about those giant C-band dishes that were status symbols in the 80's, and by the 90's the equivalent of "Chevy El Camino on cinder blocks in front yard"?

Some guy down the street from me has one.  Wayyyyyyy down the street thankfully.

He also has a ford probe GT propped up on cinder blocks in his yard.

Always wondered what he watched on it....,probably pirate broadcasts of Rev. Gene Scott.

You can get every NFL and College Football broadcast on those C-bands.
