I thought this was the Beatles, but its Badfinger

They were on the Beatles' label. And the song was written and produced by McCartney. So there is some connection there.

Another big hit by them "Day After Day" was produced by George Harrison.

For the longest time I thought Steely Dan's "Peg" was by the Doobie Brothers.  (My confusion was Michael McDonald singing backup on the tune.)

I thought the abysmal song "Strange Way" by Firefall was actually an abysmal song by Jefferson Starship.

I really wanted Abra Cadabra to have been done by just about anybody other than Steve Miller..

The story of Badfinger is certainly a sad one after they left the Apple label. A tale of seedy managers, and unfortunately suicide... but they sure had some good tunes. I never thought this song was done by anyone else, but it is a good one.

Ha jeez I hated that song, and when it first came out it was played non-stop.  Love earlier classics of his though.

Some have suggested that song is what has kept him out of the R&R Hall of Fame

Pete Ham actually pointing out in his suicide note that he held his manager responsible. A guy who was "mobbed up" and basically untouchable. Very tragic.

Unavoidable song from the summer of '82. My barometer of how bad a song was, was how much my father liked it. He thinks "Abacadabra" is great, therefore it really stinks. Miller was good, but I prefer Paul Pena's (unreleased until 2000 despite being recorded in '73) original of "Jet Airliner".

Indeed. It is amazing how many people with myself included never really knew who they were, or their story until the song Baby Blue was played during the final scene of the final episode of Breaking Bad.

That's the great thing about tv/film using music in that fashion because it can lead to exposure to a wider audience may not have had a chance to hear them. Badfinger has a pretty fascinating story, but you have to search it out a bit. Classic rock basically reduces them to 3-4 songs, and they deserve better.

I've never heard this song before. Great song.

Wow. Never heard this before, but it really is better than Miller's version.

I'm checking out New Train immediately.

A very good album, and shamefully buried for 27 years due to Albert Grossman's fevered ego. By the time Grossman died in early '86, this album was assumed lost.

Pena did benefit from Miller's cover. The royalties were often his main income.

No problem, glad you liked it. I remember the first time I heard it(a Sunday morning blues show, 6/3/01) and thinking "holy shit, why have I never heard this before?" I was blown away.

Badfinger is a criminally underrated band, and I recommend everyone go out to pick up their albums along with the early stuff when they were known as The Iveys. Straight Up is some of their best.
