Bellgabbers what is your favorite place to vacation?

I am thinking about taking one this summer just do not know where I want to go, so many options.

Well, how far do you want to travel?  Do you have kids or a significant other to consider?  How much do you want to spend?  What do you like to do?  It's tough to offer any useful suggestions without a bit more info.

For me, it isn't so much location as it is time. My best vacations were in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Montana. Both vacations were more than 3 months each.

If time is an issue, anywhere family is.

If I had lots of time and lots of money. And the world was a safe place, I would choose the middle east, fertile crescent area.

West coast of Ireland.
Yeah, driving Ring of Kerry is nice, can be touristy sometimes. I actually like it in winter, did it once in a sort of rare snowstorm and it was amazing. Sure, less "green" but amazing landscape in winter also. And one appreciates a pub with a turf fire and a pint more! Many other cool things to see do just by taking the car onto random roads and going for it. Small cars get so much more mileage than we're used too and Ireland is small (coming from the States like Texas or touring the USA, etc). Not much traffic except M7 or in the cities. But watch out for tractors, sheep, etc. And don't forget what side of the road to drive on, especially difficult if you are only car on the road, leaving a pub, etc.

A little vague. Close to home? By air? By car? By RV? Prefer lounging around or activities? Nature or urban scenes? Domestic or international? Beach or Mountain person? Budget? Hotel or camping?

If you want to do it right, go on a 4-5 month vacation and hike the Appalachian trail. That's #1 on my bucket list.

Cambria, Ca.   The fam and I now take 2 weeks every year there.  We rent a house.  Ocean views fm the hilltop.  The beach is only a 5 min walk.  2 small villages to love.  Peace and quiet.

Your mother's vagina.

Actually San Diego and Seattle are pretty nice.  I'm not too picky about cool, coastal places.  Beats the pants off the humidity, bastard heat, and frigid cold of the Midwest.

I've been all over the USA, Mexico, Canada and Europe and for this thread my vote is either Zion national Park or Bryce Canyon national Park. Just beautiful! For a week or two. Utah.

I'll add that the sunsets inIxtapa are among the most beautiful I can remember anywhere. But you would have to get a passport for that.

You do know that it is the same sun everywhere, right?

I plan to get to Zion/Bryce in the near future. I've been wanting to go for awhile. I'm born and raised Alaskan, so I love Alaska, but only in the summer. I also love taking a few days and driving old Route 66 through the panhandle of Texas into New Mexico. My dream vacation is doing a photo shoot in the region around Chernobyl and other Russian/Ukraine abandoned sites, but with all that's gone on recently, I think I'll put that on hold for a bit.

I second that. Zion is great. And Bryce Canyon is so amazing, almost alien-like, hiking around in those hoodoos is awesome.

Not pointing fingers but, I love my country. I'd never travel outside of it.
When I was younger, dumber and less patriotic I ventured as far as San Felipe, Baja California -Best Vacation Ever1
Maybe there's a hidden message there.
Like a Corona commercial. Nothing but sand, sea and sun.

Greek Island (Santorini and Mykonos in particular), Paris, Canaries, and New York. Each offers something different.

Avoid Eastern Europe and European Russia... particularly Moscow. Utter shithole full of pricks in cheap uniforms and hilariously giant hats... they are extremely bribable, though.

Oh, and Mont Sainte Michel. Closest thing to King's Landing you'll find :)

I'm quite fond of cheeseburgers, but sometimes I'll have the fish.

How does patriotism prevent one from travelling abroad?

I'm just jealous.
The "hidden message" is the further out of the States, the better the vacation.
Edit:Wow @ pics. Nice!

Kelt

Ah, humour... I am familiar with this concept ;)

Sadly I have heard people say they wouldn't go abroad, but will remain within US borders till the day they die, in complete seriousness.

There are some great places in the US, but there are some incredible things beyond these borders.

Wise.

Bar Tell: yeah, I know what you mean, same sun. But I clearly noticed the golden sunsets were more magnificent in Ixtapa  than they were in key west. I thought maybe either the particles in the atmosphere are different or the fact that one is closer to the equator is somehow relevant.   I haven't a scientific explanation nonetheless the sunsets are spectacular, unlike anywhere else it seems to me. And I wasn't the only one to notice that. It's common knowledge for those who have been there. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it. They have this phenomenon called "the green flash" where very rarely when one is watching the final minutes of the sunset one will see a flash of green just above the horizon.

Yosemite National Park, San Francisco and Napa Valley with a side trip to the lovely road between Carmel and Monterey. And Big Sur. Also, St John's Virgin Island and the gorgeous Ottawa where two Labatts had me weaving on the way back to the hotel. All places I want to revisit.

My dreams, though, are to one day visit Greece and to take the train through the Canadian Rockies.

as beautiful as Zion and Bryce are I'm not sure how they will hold up to the natural wild beauty of Alaska. Probably pretty well because the beauty of Bryce and Zion are concentrated and unique. Absolutely photogenic. Which is why I didn't suggest Yosemite, for example. It's huge with lots of great trails but it's beauty is more diffused.

I like route 66 two and I love the desert. But even more I like the West Coast Hwy. up the coast from California to Vancouver! I spend a whole day in Muir Woods and commune with nature. I used to do that trip once a year back when I still had my vision and I would stop in San Francisco for a few days and party. On my last solo trip I took my '78 Transam, the one with the big Firebird on the hood and the shaker scoop.:-)

Yes, I love most of NoCal.  Tahoe is magnificent.  Couple of years ago, I rented a condo in San Fran.  Got a transit pass for $60.  If I couldn't walk, I took the bus.  Walked the Golden Gate Bridge
, Fishermen's Wharf, Chinatown, Japantown, Coit Tower, North Beach, etc.  Wonderful in August. Some of the natives are assholes but a beautiful place to visit.

I would like  a Rocky Mountain tour and aim myself across the Dakotas out to Montana   down through Idaho, Wyoming, Utah down into Arizona (Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona) over to Santa Fe, New Mexico. But I am just as happy getting into the mountains in North Carolina that I can do nice day trips from home. If I had the money I would like to visit ancient sites around  Britain, Ireland and into the Mediterranean, Malta, Greek Isles, Egypt.

I love Muir Woods and Mt. Tam. I never get tired of that area.  I spent a lot of time in the Bay Area a couple years ago and got very familiar with the area. It's spectacular. I have a few shots of Muir Woods and Alcatraz on my page. http://ginagothejackson.smugmug.com/   Lately, we spend a lot of time on the Pacific Coast Highway. We're heading back out there this weekend.

Wow! Thanx. I'm stealing all of these. More please.
