While Google has been talking about it for some time (wanting to be the world's truth detector etc) it was just announced that a consortium of players (Google, Facebook, AFP, The Telegraph, Twitter, CNN, NYTimes, Wash Post) are getting together "to filter out online misinformation and improve news quality on social networks." The group is called First Draft News.

I hate google and FB as much as anybody else.  However, this site appears to be showing hoaxes and pointing out news stories that are untrue (and showing why).  It seems to be dedicated to social media rather than actual news stories.  Basically, from what little I have seen when I look at it, they appear to be telling people to actually question what they see on social media rather than just accepting it as fact.

I will be interested to look around a little more.  But at first glance, it is one of the few google "projects" that I can see value in (even if they are probably tracking my site visit every which way to Sunday and then selling their analytics and my information...)

True (assuming this gets past Google's et al analytics.) But a weird conglomerate and I would think that competing, independent, and verifying site and sources would be better than some conglomerate. Even IF there was no connections with them and to government(s) and initial funding.

I'd rather not have some 3rd party filtering my information, thank you very much. Information should be allowed to keep flowing freely! I'd rather put the money that would go into this effort into education...and NOT teaching people what to think but simply teaching them how to use their own minds, to be able to make their own analysis. Educating and empowering people is what we ought to be doing, not making them more dependent on an authority. No thanks!

2. I don't think he's gay as I seem to remember him speaking of a girlfriend or dating women once.
3. His views aren't really liberal. I would classify him as a left-leaning libertarian, to be honest.
4. Never seen him work with a banana.

His rants aren't bad and I agree with a lot of what he's saying often. I hope that helps.
