A few short months ago I after putting it off for some time accepted the FREE 8.1 upgrade that my new PC was pestering me about. I can't say enough about it.. >:( If you've ever considered becoming a MAC person? Now is the time.

I am now officially ready to start my hatchet murder spree.

Do you have a touchscreen monitor?

It's really designed for touchscreen, and all the retroactive patching in the world won't change that.

Personally I think they should have designed two entirely different interfaces and given users the option of touchscreen or no touchscreen on release.

Still, they're a huge company full of gold and jewels and ingots of fantastical precious metals, so they probably know the market better than me.

Are you making fun of my nose Kelt? Hmm?

Yeah I do have a TS monitor but I'm going back to Windows 98SE for one machine and buying a MAC in the next week or so. The hassles with 8.1 go far beyond the whole APP thing.. The entire platform is highly illogical captain.

98Se ? really? it cant handle more than 512Mb RAM, 1TB+ drives are out of the question, and so on. consider opensuse linux instead.

on the win8.1 crap, even server 2012 uses the metro interface. it boots to the desktop, but click on the "start" button and tile hell appears to do anything. IMHO server os's should be command line driven. GUI's eat resources best used elsewhere, like serving data.

No, they don't. Windows 8 was a big mistake, the brand is now tainted just as it was in the Vista days, and Microsoft knows it. The next version of windows will ship next year, and you can bet it won't look like or be called Windows 8.

Stop telling him how to live his life.  :)

I have an Asus with 7 on it. I got a virus. Clam Win showed me the file the virus was in so I deleated it, unfortunately there was an essential file involved and the dang deletion made the whole damn puter crash every 2 minutes. I have a Toshiba that came with 8 . the metro crap frustrated me with its nonsensical jumping in and or sensitivity to the pointer I tried to load 7 and it wiped out all the Toshibas drivers and such and made the 'puter a doorstop. I ordered the 8 recovery stick and returned 8 then after 102 updates MS allowed me to load 8.1 and all its updates. I found some utility that gave me back a more used to it 'start' page though if I screw up and click it metro jumps out.  Metro is a turd. Even though Baumer is gone I would like to stake him out on a fire and mound and pour molten aluminum over him and send the result to MS as my feelings that they would have done well to just service pack 2,3, on 7 that releasing this turd for touchscreens  as the end all resurrection of MS nightmares. I guess I have to order whatever Asus recovery disc /stick or whatever. I made 'backups 2x when I first bought it but the 'asus;puter seems not to read them. also the fucker overheats playing videos the Toshiba does not do. I am thinking of going to Mint Linux. I tried to load the Mandrake 10.1 I had but it is too old I guess for the hardware and did not seem to recognize anything to install. The Asus has an AMD A6 APU 4 core and it runs hot. The Toshiba has an AMD e series 2 core and runs barely perceptible warm, runs DVD's and videos reasonably and drives my 27" ISP monitor well.  Sometimes I would put an altoid can over the hotspot and put a small beaker that fit the can and put ice in the beaker to get through a movie.

I'm kidding about the 98. I do have an xp disk though, I just don't know. I got listening to MVs Spec Sheet last night and .. Well I should have just posted this in the Things That Annoy You thread.

But Yeah! Linux! Thanks for the advice.
