Magic is a case where I thought the film was superior to the book.

All these years later, and I can still recite the poster's tag line without looking it up! The movie ad at the time had the dummy saying it:

Hocus Pocus
I sit on his knee
Presto Change-o
Now he is me
Abracadabra we take her to bed
Magic is fun
We're dead.........

Aaaaakkkkkk!! Possessed dolls freak me OUT!
My childhood nightmares were filled with visions of Howdy Doody, and his creepy friend Cowboy Bob. Eeeewwww.
(Little bit for the Nice Little Facts thread:  The first Clarabell was played by Bob Keeshan who went on to become Captain Kangaroo.)

And even though I was "all grown up" in 1975 when Trilogy of Terror was released I had nightmares about that little doll, too....

Oddly, I enjoyed Bob on Soap.  Maybe because he was just as dysfunctional as everyone else.  Too busy laughing to be scared.      :o

It's so good to see you Treading! A few nights ago I was looking at old poppets on the Marie Laveau Voodoo Museum site. We're planning a trip to New Orleans in the near future. Yeah, the one in TOT was just terrifying. Besides the oven fiasco ... His sharp teeth and gold chain.

I have a feeling there was yet another doll related horror film during the 70s.

Two films terrified me when I was a kid.  Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black. The part where she shoved the doll in the oven. Plumes of black smoke rushing out...

The Candy Man in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I missed ToT, will have to seek that out.  I have little recollection of CCBB and what I do remember merges with fragments Mary Poppins and Apple Dumpling Gang into an incomprehensible montage.

The flick I really got spooked by was Poltergeist - the tree and the clown.  Shudder.  Also could never watch off-air static on the tv after that.  By today's standards it's all pretty tame but it was like a horror key that fit right into my kid's brain at the time.

Poltergeist was incredible and I refuse to see this new one. I loved the Dino monster ghost at the top of the stairway. Craig T Nelson is always the best 'Dad' I love him.

The Puppetmaster films! That's what I was trying to remember. I loved the puppet with the drill head.
The Omen is now on NetFlix. That's another great one and terrified me. I liked Sam Neil in the third? Omen film with Damien as an adult. I can't think of the title offhand.

Glad you're back, Chine!  :)    I'm thinking the same about the other doll film.  I can't remember it either.  But I know it's out there.
Oooooooo, creepy.   :P

Aug 28 can't come soon enough. Excited for the new series, drug cartel thriller - 'Narcos' on NetFlix. I'm also so eager to get my hands on the soundtrack as this music is so damn sexy, even contacted composer Pedro Bromfman. Perfect to paint energetic fiery dancers to. Very hot teaser trailer.

JoBeth Williams was the original MILF, at least to me and before that was a term. And a spooky movie. I am NOT going to see the remake for sure.

I've always thought she was beautiful and very cool. Loved her also in The Big Chill and Kramer vs Kramer. Yeah, I started watching the first two minutes of the remake and thought, 'Really? I'm going to waste my time on this nonsense?' and shut it off.

How horror movies really haunt us:

It was not until much later when he was in his car, and miles away from home, that Cam realized, "Shit, I think I switched "Hocus Pocus" and "Abracadabra."

Goddamn it!

I consider Saturn 3 a type of "possessed doll" story.

"Mr. Robot has received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 97% with an average score of 8.1 out of 10 based on 34 reviews.  It has been renewed for a second season. The site's consensus reads: 'Mr. Robot is a suspenseful cyber-thriller with timely stories and an intriguing, provocative premise.' Merrill Barr of Forbes gave it a very positive review and wrote, 'Mr. Robot has one of the best kick-offs to any series in a while' and that 'Mr. Robot could be the series that finally, after years of ignorance, puts a deserving network among the likes of HBO, AMC and FX in terms of acclaim.' "

Hmmmmm.

It's not the quality of the show he's objecting to - he's interpreting the show's plot as liberal propaganda.

Precisely. Except for the "liberal" part--I don't care if any given puff piece supports a point of view I agree with, propaganda is one step away from marketing and marketing is one step away from Satan's little cotton finger.

I have Tupperware chilling in the fridge that is less plastic and more innovative than the Mr. Robot pilot and contains less industrial waste to boot. Perhaps others have seen further episodes--no doubt heavily tweaked after relentless focus group analyses--so I'll hold off on calling the show as D.O.A. just yet. I was way wrong about Supernatural, after all.

Mmm. Pregnant with emotion. I somehow doubt it's the "lack of innovation" you have a problem with.

Jackstar

I don't adulate at the feet of the Innovation Deity--yet the show touts itself as "groundbreaking" and it is anything but. The people involved seemed to be genuinely talented and were taking pride in their professional work, which makes their having sold out to a fascist corporate calliope all the more heartwrenching to sit through, even through the quarter of an hour of insipid, ham-fisted exposition I found myself subjected to.

Afflicted by? Whichever, yo--I had the juju, and it wasn't good.

Huh. I did not say Jackstar was objecting to the quality of the show.

Using a popular source, I was merely pointing out the insufferable amount of kiss ass suck up regarding Mr. Robot. Thirty-seven people at Rotten Tomatoes rated it highly. So the fuck what? Some blow-hard at Forbes praises it as the miracle vehicle that will elevate USA Network to the likes of HBO, AMC, etc. That's just worthless spin. I would be surprised if Mr. Robot appreciably changes USA's vector.

That was my point. Maybe the Buck Roger's photo threw you. With that, I was making a not so subtle jab that a show entitled Mr. Robot does not contain an anthropomorphic robot.  ;D

As far as what Jackstar's intent was, I interpreted it that he was annoyed at, in his opinion, the bait and switch nature of Mr. Robot promising something promising, but failing to deliver... but I really can't speak for the paper hanging son-of-a-bitch and his weakness for Martian Nazi Robots Enslave Human Earth Women fetish.

Anyway, everyone here knows that THE tech show to watch is CSI Cyber...

(stomach lurching)

Unlike Mr. Robot, I've tried to watch CSI Cyber. Unbelievably, it's also getting a second season. I do like Patricia Arquette, but she is out of her depth with her ~cyber character~ and the script writers are clearly out of their collective depth regarding cutting edge cyber crime. When they introduced the "holo-deck," I just about committed a felony against my television screen. But it was lovely seeing Arquettee on Boardwalk Empire. Yes.

Perhaps CSI Cyber and Mr. Robot should cross streams.

At some point, I will take Mr. Robot for a test drive, as I do like Christian Slater.

But I won't give it a try because of a ridiculously small data set at Rotten Tomatoes or some self important jackoff at Forbes.  Similarly, I won't avoid the show due to Jackstar's opinion.

I do not "watch television." I do, however, routinely travel through an area that has a television playing nearly 24/7. So I am presented with a smattering of advertisements--which, now that I no longer "watch television," I often find quaint and charming instead of intrusive and annoying.

I also use the Internet, newspapers, radio, et cetera, but again, just a smattering. So when I suddenly began seeing adverts for "Mister Roboto" across all of these mediums at the same time, it was easy to notice, and far simpler to conclude: someone with money wanted people to watch this show. Shows get launched routinely--they don't always get this treatment.

I found out later that this pilot was leaked back in April or something, and the buzz amongst the people who watched it after they stole it was reportedly positive. Like, no one told me that this was going down--I just read about it months later. Beyond outing myself as a peerless hermit, I'm pointing out--as far as I'm concerned, it's plausible that no one liked this show, and all the hoopla is straight-up astroturfing.

However, I truly know nothing about the inner workings of broadcast media, so this speculation is merely that. However, the high concept for the show is that this misanthropic hacker rebel is gonna fight The Man... and in reality, The Man is paying for the show, and whine-staining the mass media market with tasteless advertisements for a thinly veiled advertisement for oxycontin, among other hot, trendy brands. Remember kids, cheese pizza is bad, and be sure to score your supplements! Big Brother, please. I wish I had children, so I could forbid them to watch it.

So it really comes down to a failure to engage a suspension of disbelief. Also, the laugh track sucked.

QuoteSo the fuck what? Some blow-hard at Forbes praises it as the miracle vehicle that will elevate USA Network to the likes of HBO, AMC, etc. That's just worthless spin.

I found the show so badly edited and packaged that I can't wrap my head around anyone holding such an opinion without also holding a hefty sack of payola. I found myself thinking I should get back to watching the beginning of the A-Team movie. It made one nostalgic for the excretable dialog of Jumper, for pity's sake.

I don't see Forbes covering the show with slathering praise without getting paid, or points, or options, or blown, or however that gang does those things these days. They don't pick what to cover on merit, though, otherwise they'd still be writing about Firefly every other week.

QuoteI would be surprised if Mr. Robot appreciably changes USA's vector.

It's all been a downhill rout since they changed the Monk theme song.

QuoteThat was my point. Maybe the Buck Roger's photo threw you. With that, I was making a not so subtle jab that a show entitled Mr. Robot does not contain an anthropomorphic robot.  ;D

The fuck you were, fucker! I see you.

QuoteAs far as what Jackstar's intent was,

The experience was so bad that when Zoo wrote "Mr. Robot," I threw up a little in my mouth. I posted out of a desire to service the community with the painful fruits of my wisdom.

QuoteI interpreted it that he was annoyed at, in his opinion, the bait and switch nature of Mr. Robot promising something promising, but failing to deliver...

Negative, Ghost Rider! It delivered exactly what it promised--a techno-fascist pseudo-passion play that exists solely to please a demographic that wants a fantasy that my demographic already used up and threw away.

Quotebut I really can't speak for the paper hanging son-of-a-bitch

Well, you weren't far off.

I have a strange fascination with the Cartel.  I've noticed this as they are always spooky and interesting to me in some of my fav films and TV series. Danny Trejo is just so cool, btw. I want to paint him. Anyhow, as I'm drawn to the dark dramas this lead to a dream three nights ago. I was in the backseat of a car and was handed a check for 19,000. Hmm. Why not 20,000? Then I shrugged in and thought... 'Oh shit, this is really good money... But wait. I'm working with the cartel.' I woke up.

So, I'm thinking I should watch Parenthood again for some cozy family goodness.

I've begun "Whispering Pines" but I found it kind of same old same old, so I stopped watching. And then several people said not to give up it gets fantastic at episode 6. So now the question is, is that enough to plow through four more episodes to get there, assuming I will actually find it amazing after that? Anyone here watching?

I had same experience as you. Quit after the first view. Who knows if I hear it really gets much better and worth watching I'll watch it on dvd/stream in a binge. But I also stopped watching.

Ok! Thanks my time is so valuable that I hate to waste it ;) . Btw, why is it (pondering here) that I can watch an old movie I've seen many times, or old tv shows, but not want to invest time in new ones?

The Invisible Man (1933) on Svengoolie.

Since I've been on BellGab more as of late, things are sometimes filtered as such.

The scene when the ~unwrapped~ Claude Rains chokes the policeman - I imagined DigitalPigSnuggler was the Invisible Man, speaking in the high speech as he throttled a blubbering Falkie.

It was quite believable.

I took one for the team, lol. If you've read or watched a lot of sci fi the plot reveal will seem derivative. The thing is, now that I've invested 6 hours in this production, I'll see it through to the end. Believe me, it's not breaking new ground. While I didn't know the exact details of the reveal, when it was revealed, it didn't surprise me in particular. Seen it in many other forms before.

From what I've read, these episodes are stand alone and if it's renewed next season, there will be a different cast. I think it's heading in the American Horror Story anthology direction.
