OK, there has been some criticism and disdain surrounding Seth MacFarlane. I just saw Ted2, call me an insensitive whatever. I laughed my ass off. ...

I haven't seen the movies but have been a Family Guy fan for years.  However I could never watch that show with others because of all the hilarious but "Oh man should I really be laughing at that?" moments.

I just returned from seeing Book Of Mormon on Broadway. I've only seen two South Park episodes (Gluten Free Ebola, All Hippies Must Die) because my son wanted me to see them. Not really my thing, but I must say that I completely enjoyed the show. Laughed out loud throughout.

West Side Story, again.

There must be two very different versions.

Shut up Ted 2 lover.

Anyway, that's OK. You and I will always have John Wick.

No one can take that away from us.

It probably would have been somewhere between trash and incomprehensible like Holy Mountain was. There's a thai crime movie called Only God Forgives that was made in the spirit of Jord-check it out if you get time.

I hope no one minds if we post on TV series on this thread. I've never found a TV thread though we have separate threads per TV series. As of recently, there are fewer films that I'm impressed with enough to post about. Most films are indie films and I follow Indiewire and the Spirit Awards each year.

I absolutely aggravated with these remakes. Urban Cowboy? Seriously?

In eagerly awaiting to see the film 'Cartel Land' which Kathryn Bigelow is now producing. It did very well at Sundance and getting great reviews.

I watched Nightstalker again which is a great film.

They're making a series sequel to Limitless. Pass the hemlock.

I'm with Cam on this.  If your read netflix/imdb reviews alot of people hated it, thinking it was just some loony ranting about a mad vision that probably would have been a disaster.  But how do we know it might not have been a singular work of genius?

Hell the soundtrack alone might have been worth it with Pink Floyd doing the Atreides and some German rage-metal band doing the Harkonnens.  And I'd have paid just to see Giger's Baron castle with the tongue that slides out as a spaceship landing pad!

I wish Stellar would post on this topic once in a while.

Something straight out of left field like...

The Gnome-Mobile was shitty!!1   Little liars more like it!!1

I thought this new TV shows was really good can not wait to see how far it will go!!1

I've seen 3 films the past 2 days, 2 from the 70's and one from the dawn of feature films.

I'll start off with the first William S. Hart silent western, The Bargain, from 1914. He was 50 and would be a Western movie icon for the next decade.  He looked ten years younger than his age.  His films usually featured him as a good bad man long before Clint Eastwood and the spaghetti western.

Since many may not watch, I'll give it a thumbnail sketch.  Hart robs a stagecoach and is injured as he makes his escape.  He comes across an old prospector and his daughter who tend to his wounds not knowing he is a criminal.  He gets better and has a change of heart.  He marries the daughter but realizes he has to make amends.  He goes to town to return the stolen money to Wells Fargo but is spotted by some of the townspeople. He panics and flees.  The sheriff from that town pursues him to another town on the Mexican border.  The sheriff captures Hart and takes the money from him.  He realizes that Hart intended to return the money but he still broke the law, so they wait overnight to take the morning stagecoach back to his town.

In the meantime, he ties up Hart and decides to gamble.  He loses all of his money and then proceeds to spend the stolen money.  Sullen, he goes back to his room where Hart is and tells him what happened.  Hart proposes a plan.  Steal the money again and return the money to the sheriff in exchange for a chance to escape the clutches of the law.  He succeeds and the sheriff keeps his promise.  He goes back to his wife and they flee to Mexico.

Anyway, it is a well-done Western and Hart is great.  The direction was adequate enough.  Some of the film was made at the Grand Canyon so that is a movie first, I think. The vistas were photographed nicely. The plot twists were nice. I didn't expect them in such a an early Western.  I was never bored watching the picture so the editing was well-done.  I think it is an important film and deserves to be more well-known.  I'm going to give it 3.75 stars out of 5.

Next, The Last Tycoon, from 1976 with Robert DeNiro and a mixed cast of old and contemporary actors such as Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, Dana Andrews, Theresa Russell and Ray Milland.  Directed by the Great Elia Kazan, this film was an adaptation of a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The movie is a thinly-disguised story about Hollywood specifically MGM around 1934.  DeNiro plays the Thalberg character and Mitchum is Leo B. Mayer under another name.  DeNiro is excellent in one of his more sympathetic roles as is the rest of the cast.  However, the movie is fatally flawed.  It is way too long and drawn out.  Some scenes seem to last forever.  I could have cut 30 minutes from the film easily and it would have flowed much more smoothly.  The person who edited The Last Tycoon could learn something about editing from watching The Bargain.  I liked The Last Tycoon but it rates no better than a 3 out of 5.  A disappointment from Elia Kazan.

Finally, F. I. S. T. (1978) from stars Sylvester Stallone, Peter Boyle, Tony Lo Bianca and Rod Steiger along with up-and-comer Brian Dennehy and old DeMille vet, Henry Wilcoxon (Cleopatra, Samson and Delilah, The Ten Commandments, Caddyshack).  Now this is a very underrated thinly-veiled biography of Jimmy Hoffa.  Stallone is excellent in a rare straight dramatic role following his success from Rocky.  His Johnny Kovak is more likeable than Hoffa ever was but he gets drawn into working with the Mob to achieve union success. Steiger is only in the last half hour or so but he is riveting.  Every actor does stellar work in this film. Director Norman Jewison also does an excellent job.    This movie is always interesting. I was never bored and this movie was as long as The Last Tycoon.  Joe Esterhaz wrote a great script with an assist from Stallone.  4.25 stars out of 5.  Why not 4 and a half or 5?  I can't answer that except to say something is missing.  However it is a great film.

TV works well here, but we do draw the line at posting anything about game shows in this thread.

(Unless of course, it's to discuss Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life, which is always allowed. Bill Cosby's version of YBYL is never allowed. Not because of the scandal, but because it sucked.)

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is one of my favorites in the Made-for-TV horror movie category. It's right up there with Satan's Triangle and Spielberg's Something Evil, in my opinion.  All underrated and pretty much forgotten/overlooked. I think the king daddy of them all for me, must be Gargoyles, because it's so ridiculous at times, but still so fun to watch. Nightstalker is high on the list.

I was going to mention Race with the Devil, but double-checked. It was a theatrically released film. Though it felt like a made-for-TV movie and had a fantastic ending.

Low production values or no, that movie freaked me out as a kid.

Okay, I am not calling you out here, but I watched fifteen minutes of the first episode, and it seriously seemed like the worst piece of shit I've ever seen Christian Slater in.

Seriously. And I like Christian Slater.

"Mr. Robot has received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 97% with an average score of 8.1 out of 10 based on 34 reviews.  It has been renewed for a second season. The site's consensus reads: 'Mr. Robot is a suspenseful cyber-thriller with timely stories and an intriguing, provocative premise.' Merrill Barr of Forbes gave it a very positive review and wrote, 'Mr. Robot has one of the best kick-offs to any series in a while' and that 'Mr. Robot could be the series that finally, after years of ignorance, puts a deserving network among the likes of HBO, AMC and FX in terms of acclaim.' "

Hmmmmm.

Two films terrified me when I was a kid.  Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black. The part where she shoved the doll in the oven. Plumes of black smoke rushing out...

The Candy Man in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. My Dad bought me a model of the car. There was a switch on it to pop open the wings.

No new Pope for you!

Ahahaha! You know, I watched it again a year ago and thought, 'Damn! This film is a classic!'

I love demonic, possessed puppet films. Especially those in the 70s. Magic is another classic (Anthony Hopkins) A great psychological thriller.

Magic is a case where I thought the film was superior to the book.

All these years later, and I can still recite the poster's tag line without looking it up! The movie ad at the time had the dummy saying it:

Hocus Pocus
I sit on his knee
Presto Change-o
Now he is me
Abracadabra we take her to bed
Magic is fun
We're dead.........

Just watched "Magic" again a few weeks ago (in response to another thread in which someone forget the name of the movie with Hopkins and mannequin.) Great movie. Spooky. I never read the book but that is a rare thing when the book is worse than the movie (unless the book was a marketing thing and written after the movie.) Do they still do that anymore? I seem to recall they used to make books, even series of books, off of movies.

That's a good question. I think there would be but you would probably have to search on it.

It just dawned on me... I completely forgot that Richard Attenborough directed Magic.
