The "I'm watching/just watched *movie title* thread....

Harvey is on TCM right now, followed by the sequel, The Harvey Girls, starring Judy Garland as a waitress for a fledging restaurant chain based in western railroad stations owned by a pooka in the guise of a six foot rabbit.

And here I was watching "Charlie Chan in Shanghai." Admittedly a pretty good one, less fanfare and asides for showgirls or musical acts but more gun-play and CC wisdom. And son shows off fighting skills and not total bumbling fool. Lack of comedic blacks in stereotypical roles but still a good movie. But almost nothing beats "Harvey."

Here I was thinking John Wick 2 had been released and would see it this week, when I find out that it has no release date at all for this country because of the distributor.

Guess I'll just go see Silence instead.

There hasn't been a movie that really motivated me to go to the theater since Arrival.

Reviews and box office has been good for split but I can't trust the director. I liked Watts' Rings, but don't really need a remake of it so soon (without Watts) and it looks like a big 2nd week dip

50 shades winning Friday disappointed me 50 shades 21.5M, LEGO Batman 15M. John Wick 11M. But Saturday got better with estimates of Lego Batman 22M, 50 shade 15M, Wick 10M. So far Lego and shades are about tied at 37M with Wick well behind with 21M. Batman should Win the weekend with a kid friendly Sunday. Surprised Lego Batman isn't doing a bit better.

About to put A Fistful of Dollars on the spinner.

Time to send the PC to Mr. Sandman.

I think I still have a "fistful of dollars," and "a few dollars more" on VHS in the basement.  Perhaps time to dig them out?  :)

I saw Eastwood on TV in the booth at the Pebble Beach golf thing Saturday, He still looks good.

Love an old movie but don't want to sit through it yet again? Might I recommend Oliver Harper's Retrospective Reviews...

I just saw that next week a double feature of Lady Snowblood is playing at an arthouse theatre, might go see that.

Just got those two on Criterion blu-ray.  Have yet to watch them though.

Did you know that in the late 90s one of the networks remade Harvey with Harry Anderson and Leslie Nielsen?
It was surprisingly not bad, but I may be biased because I like those guys.

This is the first I've heard of it, and I would have to see it to believe it's not bad even though I also like those actors. I can kind of see Harry Anderson as Dowd, but have to think Leslie Nielsen would have been the better choice. I'll have to watch for it, because I wouldn't be surprised if it turns up on one of the retro channels that sometimes show obscure old TV movies.

I finished watching There Will Be Blood. Daniel Day-Lewis is a gift to any cinephile. In the world of acting, these people try to pump out as many films as they can. You can really tell the difference between an actor who dials it in, making like three or four movies a year, and someone who comes around once every few years and really blows you away. Daniel Day-Lewis chooses his roles very carefully and becomes the character he is playing. I've read stories where cast members have tried to talk to him off set and he would stay in character.  His role in There Will Be Blood is one of the best performances I've ever seen.

It is as though you have some insight into my fathers collection of tapes that resides in my basement...  Yes, that movie is there.  I think if I were to watch one of the old westerns for the actor, I would probably go with a movie that had VanCleef in it over Eastwood...  I watched way too many movies with dad.  :)

If you can secure a copy of A Fistful of Dollars on disc that includes Sir Christopher Fraling's commentary, you will never view the movie the same again.

Maybe your dad was really onto something.

Much love for Two Mules For Sister Sara. I have watched and own Clint Eastwood's entire collection. Some not so good. Especially his newer work. The last ten years are really hit or miss. I even own the Rawhide on dvd. His best work was the fist full of dollars trilogy and those two hokey but fun every which way but loose and every which wasy you can. Watched Unforgiven the other day. He does fart out some good ones now and then. But young Eastwood was the best Eastwood.
I hear his son is making movies. Looked him up on imdb. Fucking genes..Looks just like his dad, but can't act to save his life. nepotism. Also feel sorry for Sandra Locke. Ya know, Eastwood ruined her career because she wanted out o the relationship. Sad. She was a looker back in the day. Crazy eyed looker.
But I digress.

Was recently privileged to view the Shakespearian majesty that is Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

I may need to keep an eye out for that.  I suppose it would mean looking for a DVD and not the VHS.  ;)

You will not regret it.  It is a legitimate and enlightening commentary, unlike many director/writer/actor(s) superficial commentaries which often induce deep sleep.

Watched it tonight.  Couldn't help but be a bit disappointed by it.  It was rather disjointed and I think a narrator would have helped.  I also felt that much of Martin's life was given short shrift.  He worked for National Review for 15 years but that isn't touched on.  And  the one critic of Martin in the documentary had an ax to grind because he thought Martin fooled around with his wife.  I'd like to know more of his story.  I didn't know about the bit of a feud William Peter Blatty had with Martin.  The other stuff about his death was very interesting but not conclusive.  Nice to see Ralph Sarchie and Art interviewed.  However, the definitive Martin documentary has yet to surface.  Hopefully someone will do him justice someday.  2.5 out of 5 stars.

Hey there. Signed on here as I was curious if anyone else watched it. I read the book many years ago and of course, heard all the interviews (have the CDs as well - remember when those were available?) I finally watched it last night and thought it was 'okay' Agree with you that there could be a better documentary to explore much further. It was entertaining enough. Perhaps I missed it or was dozing off, what happened with the young girl that he saw prior to his death? Wish that was explored more and his other work apart just from his protégés talking. Took the one guy forever to drive to that house. Though it was certainly good to build tension but I was sitting there thinking 'Can you just get to the house already?' And then it seemed there wasn't much said about her, family and that case.

Hi Chine.  Nice to see you!  :D  The young girl was successfully exorcised a couple of years after Martin's death.  As far as I know, she's ok now.  I was expecting so much more from the documentary than I got.  It held my attention.  I would definitely recommend to those interested in Martin. It is just not definitive.

I finally  went to the theatre and watched M. Night's "Split" because of the decent reviews & 3 weeks in the top spot of the box office

I am glad I did! The best movie M. Night has done in  over 15 years (probably  Unbreakable ) The lead actor was unbelievable  and I was hooked from the very beginning.

Watched Blair Witch (2016), or as I like to call it "Shakycam Jumpscare Massacre", last night and it was a pretty decent redo of the original.
Think they made a mistake in showing the witch, IMO, but they gotta sell some toys.

I used the same template for The Force Awakens, just changed the titles.

Poltergeist on TCM, and it's nice to see the uncut version with the scene where the parents are casually getting baked before retiring. Basic cable stations caved in to political correctness and edited it out twenty or more years ago, although when the movie was released it didn't generate much controversy because it was consistent with the times. If it had taken place today, the movie would have ended before the angry spirits had a chance to arrive, because the parents would have been arrested for child endangerment and the kids would have wound up in the dreaded System.
