BellGabbers, George Knapp has confirmed he will attend GabFest 2016! Yes, KNAPP TIME! George Noory may attend, but since GK is already in Vegas, he says he will be there!

I'm buying him all the drinks, if you attend, you bring the entertainment! Now, I"m working on him being on the live GabCast from the Double Down Saloon! However, we want this to be completely low key, casual.

Correct. They were 5000/1 at the stsrt of the season. One more match I think will secure it. Pretty meaningless though. Foreign manager/coach, most players are foreign. EPL and much of the other divisions are a list from the UN.

Oh yeah, but that is the way of the world. I recall there still was much controversy over rugby going "pro" when I was there from some of the folks.

Wasn't there a movement, a few years ago, about some kind of quota system with regard to native players in leagues in some countries, incl Eng? I guess nothing became of that?

What is fascinating, to me, and commented on by others well before me, is that your "soccer" is much more capitalist than our sports (or at least was.) Here we can lose, lose, lose, and the owners still get their place in the league, a stadium often build with public funds, monopolistic league protection, profit-sharing amongst owners for tv etc revenue, tv/radio markets "divided up" based on region, etc. No relegation, system by which bad teams get "first dibs" on players coming up, etc.

Yeah we use socialism, or even "national socialism," in the non-racist way like earlier Italian version. We use our public, usually, institutions (high schools, colleges, and universities) to develop players (where they can't be paid, basically, but can be worn out sometimes) and then have minor league systems but no relegation (of teams- players, especially in some sports, very much so. Like a slave almost.) So the best, surviving talent get to the top (and makes big money) the developement has been, often, subsidized. And the Professional leagues teams gets relegated and you have a protected media market- so you can have owners who want to do 'just enough' and there is profit sharing in league for tv etc rights to an extent, publicly built stadiums (owner will threaten to move team,) and all kinds of stuff.

The marketing, alone, in some circumstances, makes some of the "non-professional" sports, in schools like my Alma mater, makes so much $$ and especially tv rights to the "college game." Even when are piss-poor. And coaches/managers paid $$ but, also blamed, sometimes too quickly. Now, granted, it is self-funding (not taking tuition money or public money and even pays for sports nobody cares about- due to a provision in a thing called Title XI that female sports must be supports as much as men's sports.) But it is still a mess.
