Star Trek or Star Wars?

All I know is that Star Whores was a better movie than Star Prick.

Star Trek or Star Wars?
Movies or TV series or just overall in general?

The best Star Trek stuff is better than the best Star Wars as far as storyline.

If I had to pin down the generic storylines or the shows it would be:

Star Trek: There's some aliens, we have a misunderstanding. Lets talk to them and work this thing out.
Dr. Who: There's some aliens, doing nasty things. Lets stop them and trap them in a time loop.
Star Wars: Growing up is hard and adults are oppressive. Lets get rid of them.

Overall.  Curious what the average bellgabber would say about it...  for me I would have to say Star Trek is more intellectual, and more thought provoking so I enjoy it more.   Star Wars has been more fun and action packed and  think I liked it better when I was younger.   My favorite Star Trek series were STTNG and Voyager.

I have a couple friends that debate this all the time.

And on one level I agree Star Trek is more intellectual. Yet, if you dig a bit deeper just the opposite is true. The relationships in Star Wars are much more complex and revolve around a history. Whereas Star Trek, with the exception of a few strory lines is all rather compact.

And judging from this cut ESB scene: Incest is confusing. Interrupt it with robots.

It is the quintessential debate on any and all forums, online and off, I'm sure.

Well Star Wars is a made up history.  Star Trek revolves around our history, and its made up progression into the future.   It does seem true that the alien races in Star Wars have known each other a lot longer than Star Trek's have, but unless you are into the books I don't think it has that much relevance to the main story of Jedis and Empires.    Star Trek has nuggets of thought packed into a single movie or episode.  Although there is a storyline that passes through all episodes, most deal with an individual side story.   I don't think there are hardly any side stories that present moral or physical dilemmas to follow in the Star Wars movies - aside from the incest one that kingdom pointed out.

This really isn't my debate. I pretty much like which one is on at the moment better than the other.

I think both Rodenberry and Lucas get lucky with popular culture and general myths in their writings. I don't think either one is what I would call a "deep" thinker. That being said Lucas did create a somewhat new world with similar clothing. Whereas Rodenberry used... oh hell I dunno, I like em both.

I do too.  I just had to throw something out there to try to snag people in.  That's why I don't say star wars and star trek in the title..  otherwise people would say "been there, done that" before they clicked the thread title.  I'm evil, I know.

I find the characters much richer and more developed in Star Trek...  I very much like that Roddenbery envisioned a future in which humanity stopped stepping on its own dick (sorry for the ugly visual image and pop-linguistic phrase).  Star Wars, to me, is pretty much space opera.  It's entertaining enough as such, but I don't turn to it for deep thought.

The original Trek aliens were pretty cheesy by today's standards, to be sure, but at least I don't confuse them with a Jim Henson production.

I felt Star Wars had a lot of relationships to The Wizard of Oz and ended up being more of a fantasy set in the future. Star Trek seemed to me to be more science fiction than fantasy.

I think that is a hard line to draw. But I get your point. It is my observation that Star Wars fans are much more enthusiastic than the Star Trek fans. Certainly if you look at box office it would lean toward Star Wars. The first film alone ran in major theaters for more than a year. If you look at marketing Star Wars wins even bigger. I am not sure that is a marker for best story but it certainly is for most popular story.

Yeah I'm sure this is true.  And a lot of it must have to do with the violence.  Light sabers are just fucking cool.

Better Storyline:

The Sopranos or Breaking Bad   ?

area51drone

I have yet to see the Sopranos, but Breaking Bad must have been one of the best shows ever on television.  Definitely a top 5 for me, probably top 3.

Way to take this thread title in a new direction  ;)

Star Trek = Space Canadians

Vaguely socialist, culturally reduced to blandness, unisex, eagaltarian bullshit, prime directive panty-waists, feelings, empathy, idealism, and worf in Robin Hood tights.   It's all gay utopia in the same vein as metropolitan Canadian politicians envision society.   Case in point....that commie, Jack Layton dorking it up in a custom tailored starflert uniform.

Star Wars = neckbeards in space

Can't figure it of its a fairy tale or a western.

The prequels are childhood-raping garbage too.
