Maybe this should go in the annoyed thread.

I get really annoyed with the-talking-over-others complaint. We aren't professionals. I can't speak for Jaz or Eddie, but I don't get paid for doing it. I have no training in radio, and I do it only for the fun. No one was disrespecting with dismissive or derisive speech.

Falkie, called into talk to three people. And in a larger sense to present himself to other members of the forum. So what if he was distracted by his environment? It was a perfectly human situation. It wasn't contrived or manipulative. So where is the harm?

Everyone has the ability to call the show; and I truly hope everyone does. The Gabcast, at its core, is a conversation for all of us to appreciate. It isn't about the best production values or just how cool-glib we can be.

Here, here.

Onan gets it. And not in the Art Bell on George Noory way either.

I wanted to comment on this, too, and I don't mean to talk over anyone here. Ever since we started our broadcast in 2010, I've been accused -- in the nastiest possible ways -- of interrupting the guests. And it's 79% because of the damn half-duplex - /over/ - thing that has reduced us to walkie-talkies again, which I've never really liked or played with back in the day. Or CB radio. 13% is due to the fact of a girl-voice daring to interrupt a guy-voice, but that's for another thread.

So here's a new point: How about the listeners coming up to speed with the new technology and learn to expect and overlook this little problem? They already overlook it when talking to people on their own phones. It can be irritating, but it's the price we pay for instant-on.

Agree entirely. The underlying 'problem' is one that can't be easily overcome. Lack of face to face communication and the obvious delay on Skype. It's no-ones fault. The guys do a good job IMHO.

Well, apart from Jaz, all he does his tout his soiled underwear and dubious postcard collection. But in his defence, he's Australian. IT ISN'T HIS FAULT!

Pah! I'm not bitter; why did you bring up that unimportant throwback to past victories?

Some comments from me.  I don't know a damn thing about moderating a podcast, so take 'em for what they're worth.

Choose one person to function as moderator, whose role is to facilitate the discussion.  The ground rule is that callers or guests generally get to speak in turn as called upon by the moderator.  Might sound a little rigid, but people tend to bend or break the rules, so you do allow for interjections, but it's constrained.

There is software out there that allows you to enforce this format with callers.  It has a screening status (which you might not need), and an on-deck status once they've been vetted where they can listen to the discussion but their voices aren't heard.  When it's their turn, the moderator can turn their mic on.

Just based on the last podcast, I'm not sure this is a big issue anyway.  If you take Falkie out of the podcast, there was not that much cross-talk.  That's more of an individual issue (one that he seems to recognize now and will presumably correct) than something structural with the broadcast format.

AKA The Dick Joke Hour With Jaz and Friends.

Jaz mixed it up this week. He showed his wonderful versatility  with a vagina joke. Best line in the show IMO!
he gots mad skills, yo!
Curtis had second place honors with his 'sneeky funny' coffee query. He was appropriately compensated with the top right quote on bellgab.  You should include this rare honor in your resume curtis!

I do use a separate and full feature audio channel on my mixer which is for skype callers/traditional phone calls.
I can, and do, mute callers when they call. If we are  in the middle of a conversation, I keep them muted until I am ready to bring them into the fold. They can hear the broadcast while muted, but the listener can't hear them.
I don't have a call screener and have no plans to screen the calls we get. No need really, for a small hobby podcast.
I'm running the technical aspects and production of the show alone. I'm not bitching about it in anyway. I find it exhilarating and a wonderful challenge!

Edit; MV takes care of distribution, podcast uploads/downloads and the streaming platform at ufoship.com

Edit: we might end up going to a loose 'round robin' type format if the problem gets worse. For now, just keeping the listeners entertained and filling the time we have, is the biggest concern. I'm sure after a few months of experience with eachother, the problem will solve itself.

thanks for the comments.
I'm glad you enjoy the show.
I certainly do. :)

a small hobby podcast.

Speaking as a newbie and thus coming into it fresh and without expectations, I found it to be a very professional job.  It sounded more like a polished show with a support staff going out to thousands rather than a "hobby" cast going out to dozens.  Even the bit at the end, where the outro music ended before the show did, seemed charming rather than bumbling.

I fully expect your success to grow to the point where I will be able to say, "That show has really gone downhill since it got popular."

Not yet. I'm a little nervous. I feel like a teenager. 2 years out of the game has turned me into a pussy. I don't know why. I toked almost daily for 20 years before that. Guess I don't want to fall off the wagon.
