This morning I was driving to visit my girlfriend in the hospital before she had surgery to remove her gallbladder. I was listening to last nights show and stuck in traffic so I decided to pop into Bellgab and read the commentary from last night. Well, recently a law was passed banning texting/face booking/twitting etc. while driving. Wouldn't you know it that as soon as I make my turn towards the hospital, there they are. Flashing blue lights. I'm being pulled over! I pull over and the cop approaches my vehicle. He's asks if I know why I was pulled over and I say no. He says turn down your radio. As I'm doing that, he says is that Art Bell? I replied yes, it's last nights show. He says lasts nights was a clashic. CLASHIC. Almost as if he meant to mispronounce it. I laughed and said most are. He said well I pulled you over for texting and driving. Actually, I said, I'm reading Bellgab. To my surprise, he says Bellgab? What a strange place. I guess all Art fans are though. I couldn't believe it! He eventually let me off with a warning!! So THANK YOU cop, whoever you are!!!! Hope you read this and post!

Need to tell that one to Art.

I thought about that. Guess I should thank him to. If it was Dave I was listening to he probably would have dragged me off to jail after a thorough beating and tazing.  Considering he's a Bellgaber and all.

Listening to Dave should get you an insanity plea.

You really should not be texting/reading and driving. It is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

yeah, when you are right, you are right. I have to admit, I take a few chances looking at information in between one visit to the next.

When a woman wants to contact you, it doesn't matter how dangerous or unlawful taking that text is. You are going to hear how evil her sister is right now, no matter what.

I'm guilty of it too. I tell myself off every time I do it.

Very cool how that turned out.  :)   Were these night beat cops nearing the end of their shift in the morning, I wonder?  A ton of those guys must be in a far better mood now that Art is back on at night.  Twenty years ago I was young and stupid as opposed to just being stupid now and I was driving under the influence late at night, heading home from a bar.  Cops pull me over, multiple police cars.  They have me dead to rights and I'm not trying to get out of it.  They are giving touch your nose type tests and a cop points to the fake but official looking Area 51 sticker on my back window.  He says "You listen to Art Bell?"  I say "Yesh shir!"  He gives a wink and a nod.  They put me back in my truck and follow me the couple miles I had left to drive to make sure I got home safe.

Thank you Art.

Worked just as good of a deterrent as getting arrested as I never tested their patience again.

Anyway, now that these guys can listen to quality night talk again I'm sure they are a lot happier/more forgiving!

Never of thought of it like that. I wonder how many people have been given tickets out of frustration from listening to Snoooron all night. Cool story! Arts everywhere man.

You really should not be texting/reading and driving. It is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

What someone needs to do is develop a program where the texts come out vocally so you don't have to read them.
Or a hologram appears and a hot looking babe with a sultry voice ( or good looking guy for the women ) appears and reads your text messages to you.

The maximum fine for texting whilst behind the wheel was recently increased over here;

Quote
The only permitted use of a mobile phone whilst driving is using a hands free kit. Even that will be unlawful if you allow a call/text etc. to distract you whilst driving.

Driving using a mobile phone without hands free is an offence with a fine between £60 and £1000 (£2500 for drivers of goods vehicles and buses) at court. The standard fixed penalty for driving whilst using a hand held mobile phone is a £60 penalty and 3 licence points.

With or without hands free, if you are driving badly, you can also be prosecuted for careless driving or dangerous driving which carry much higher penalties. If you kill someone in an accident caused by phoning or texting etc. you can expect a lengthy sentence of imprisonment (e.g. up to 7 years for phoning and worse if you are texting).

The use of a mobile phone without a hands free kit is not allowed whilst driving. Driving includes times when for whatever reasons you are held up during the journey, for example, traffic jams and traffic lights.

The police do not advocate driving whilst using a mobile phone at all as they are distracting.

The use of the mobile phone to call the emergency services on 999 is permitted under the new regulations, if you are acting in response to a real emergency and it is not safe or practical for you to stop to make the call.

However...

It is an offence to use a hand held mobile phone or an "interactive communications device", but there is an exemption for a two way radio which is designed or adapted -

(i) for the purpose of transmitting and receiving spoken messages; and
(ii) operates on any frequency other than 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 925 MHz to 960 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz, 1805 MHz to 1880 MHz, 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz or 2110 MHz to 2170 MHz.

Ofcom states that you should be transmitting CB in the 27MHz range, if you are, you come within the exception and are OK. The exception was created because so many government and private organisations (e.g. taxis) use 2 way radios.

However, there is strong scientific evidence that any such activity (including fiddling with your CD player etc.) does raise the level of danger so far as accidents are concerned, so it is recommended that you do whatever you can to minimise use of transmitter buttons, tuning devices and volume controls. If something akin to hands free exists it would be a good idea.
