She would be upset too if I did the same, and I can tell you there have been times when she was not so supportive of my pinball collecting habits.  But it has been a couple years since I bought a game, and she has seen the wisdom of my ways with regards to the income and the value,

Collections always end up starting fights. Alot of the fights are because of the room they take up, and when you collect things as big as pinball machines (and store them in your house) I bet it causes some fights.
That is why I collect money.

Anyway, I think the stuff Seraphim collects is a strong niche market where pretty much everything you buy can be resold for what you paid for it-like collecting guns (the example I gave before), if you buy the right stuff you can own for almost free.

Oh, we've never fought about it, and as far as the space goes my wife doesn't care.  There just have been a couple of times when money was tight that I was going out and spending a few thousand bucks on a new game, and we probably should have been saving it then.     The only money I think is worth saving is collectible money.  If you're not investing your money then you're wasting it, and it's becoming less valuable every day.   Pinball has been a great investment for me, and one that I can enjoy while the value rises.

Surprisingly, pinball is something that has enjoyed *increased* popularity in poor economic times, whereas, I believe something like a doll would probably go down in value.  But what do I know.

The doll I just sold for $1,900 on eBay, I bought for about $1,000. That's not a huge appreciation in value, but it works for me right now. I have six of them that originally cost anywhere from $700 to $1,500. Frankly, I don't see them as dolls in the traditional sense because of the high degree of artistry that went into making them. Each one was made to order. They're art. They're not goofy dime-a-dozen porcelain dolls or Marie Osmond Home Shopping Network monstrosities. And they don't sit on shelves collecting dust; they're small trained assassins.

This one, Shiva: Bought for $700. Currently worth $3,500 in mint condition, $2K in excellent condition.

Right.   These women don't know me from Adam, so I am perfectly fine with what they say.   I do sound very chauvinistic on this forum.  I am not.   My wife is free to spend money how she pleases.  We own a business together.  I do the brunt of the labor, she handles the books, pays the bills etc.  She actually handles the finances of our household as well.   Even if we both had separate jobs, which we once did have, our money was pooled together, not separate "I'll buy what I want, you buy what you want" when it comes to pricey items.  I've always discussed large ticket purchases with her - I never went out and bought a pinball machine without talking to her first.

As for the value of the dolls, good for you Seraphim.   I was simply saying that I think in more down economic times the dolls values would decrease.   I even said "what do I know" about the value of dolls.   Right now I would not say is a down economic time.  I wonder what those dolls sold for in 2009?  When did you buy them?

I log into the forum a couple of times a day while I am working my ass off, for a quick break.   You have no idea how hard I work.  The only pinball I've played in the last couple of years is maybe a couple games a week at home, and then testing the machines that I fix.  So I'm not fucking around like you think.    And you're on the forums just as much as I am, so what would that say about you?

I have two cousins who were born, raised and educated in Canada and who are now doctors in Chicago and Miami hospitals and no matter how many times they would tell people here that the health care systems, on the whole, are on par with each other, these guys just can't believe it. They make up stories that are not true... bla bla bla.

This is the type of person with whom you are dealing with here. There lack of critical thinking skills make them dangerous and prone to poor decision making.

When I was in university I was doing research on home grown terrorists and the type of person that gets caught in that trap. You know like; 911 truth movement, white supremacy groups, militia groups, right wing religious groups, environmental and animal activism groups. Anything that goes beyond regular peaceful protest and takes the form of violence or has the potential for violence.

This was around 6-7 years back and  we were searching for websites/forums where these people hang out so we could get a feel for their concerns whether they be based in reality or fantasy. Any ways, I tripped over this place and watched it for a while but it was on the borderline... it wasn't like Jeff Rense or like Alex Jones but it was a calmer, lite version. It seemed to us that people were interested but still had a grasp on reality and were poking fun of certain topics. It was a fine line but in the end we decided not to spend any further time here.

My point is; that the same type of person that gets caught up in these type of groups and beliefs are the majority of members here. This is who you are dealing with here.

Just wanted to say that I feel you and think your rant was classic. It really reminded me of a conversation I once had with my family when we were in Miami. I made a comment about the talk radio shows there and ask the people I was with if they ever listen to them. They were doctors, lawyers, highly educated people and they turned to me and answered, "I am too busy to listen to radio."

It was a real eye opener. Highly successful people don't really listen to this crap. They are working and travelling and living. They are more concerned about their family, their nieces and nephews than to waste their precious free time listening to Rush Limbaugh's dribble. They are too busy working, helping people and contributing to society. But mostly, they are concerned with bettering themselves and solving their own problems.

These people are beyond repair and all they want to do is share the misery that is their lives by forcing it down our throats. They are losers. Just ignore them. Have fun with your hobby. Enjoy it. You deserve it. These people are stuck in a cycle of unhappiness that the only thing they know how to do is make people unhappy. In fact, they are addicted to their own unhappiness. It makes them happy to make other people unhappy and the negative consequences that come with it.

I think your collection is great and I am happy to hear that you have been successful at selling part of it. It sure does sound fun.

While I use the ignore feature quite a lot and have turned off all avatars, when a thread devolves like this there isn't much recourse.  I'm not sure what has changed on the forum but I don't recall it being like this a year or two ago?  Is this who we are now, sell your stuff turns into this?  If so, then I'm out entirely, I value myself and my time too much to read thread after thread of anger and hate.  So freaking bummed out right now, I just don't understand this place any longer.

The only people promoting pinball machines as a hot collectible are people who own them and are trying to sell them. Try selling these guys yours, and it'll suddenly be a dead horse they can only pay you salvage fees for.

Every time those two clowns on American Pickers "find" a warehouse full of them, notice how they buy just one?

But anywho...you yourself in your post to me outline where the real money is in the Pinball collecting, Maintenance fees!  It's a hole in the ground you dump money into. $100 an hour to fix them. You didn't mention parts. Hunting down parts, shipping

My family owned 2 arcades! I'm intimately aware of the overhead on maintaining working models...

Just like any collectible, there are winners in even a dead field. Heck there's still Beanie Babies worth $100's of dollars...the other 99% are sitting in free boxes at the end of driveways. But there's a few people still want.

Of course there's hot Pinball Machines. There's also 20 pages of COMPLETED AUCTIONS on Ebay that hardly had any sell. And by hardly I'm talking 1-2%. You know who made a ton of money off those listings? Ebay, themselves in listing fees, that's who!

A $1900.00 doll is also a rarity in the doll market. I just acquired a bunch of dolls cleaning out the estate of OLD doll collectors. By old, I mean these people had gone to doll shows back in the 70's! I knew I was sitting on some good ones but I don't know dolls. I offered the bunch for $1000. Got contacted by several doll "dealers" who browbeat the piss out of the collection...I had a woman offer me $100 for them all, nit picking everything for an hour and getting angry that I wouldn't take her offer. I literally had to throw her out.

I ran them through a local auction...holy cripes! First off, there were 50 "left bids", then entire group sold for over $8000. Several of the dolls went for over $1000 by themselves. The worse part? The woman who offered the $100, was a major player on bidding on several of those dolls.

Why am I telling you this? To illustrate most of the "dealers" in this field are trying to steal everything! Impress you with their BS and tell you you have nothing. It kills them to pay YOU directly any kind of money.

It's the same in many collectible fields. Fishing lure guys, tool guys, doll ladies, Christmas dealers, in their hands it's the lost Ark of the covenant, in your hands it's stinky diapers.

Where as there are people that collect Pinball Machines, it's a pretty specialized field, with specific models being sought after. And even when a person does discover grandpa stuck one of these under a tarp in the back of his garage... http://www.pinballrebel.com/game/pins/kiss/kiss_pinball.html, he'd better get ready for a slew of scumbags trying to browbeat the hell out of him to get it for pennies on the dollar. He'll hear everything from
"it's a really down market", "don't sell like they used to", "So expensive, I might have it for a long time, thus I can only pay.." that last ones my favorite!

You'll meet a bunch of dealers who will suddenly be declaring how dead the field is. It is, but not for a highly desirable one, like the Kiss pinball machine.

  Hardly a hot collectible, like vintage clothing. Which 100,000's of  people can afford to collect.

I would imagine that the shipping costs of a pinball machine would be ridiculous. Ebay itself has turned into a more expensive Amazon and shipping is more often than not free with amazon. On Ebay the sellers double the pricing of the S/H to make extra profit.

My eldest brother has 2 pinball machines, a Pac-Man/spacse invaders sit down table (very cool), and another space ship arcade game that I can't remember the name of. He also has every video game console ever made attached to a tv from the same era and they are all in working condition. The oldest one is a black and white PONG game.
