I may have missed something, but has anyone heard from Hal 9000 since his last post in March?

I was informed in another thread that he was banned but I have no idea what for.

For posting the personal information of other users... pictures to be specific.

Not naked, but that's irrelevant. He was a deranged, psychotic, sociopathic cunt. But that's only my considered opinion.

Was compounded by some who should have known better (Not MV I hasten to add) not once took him to task before it got silly, because he told them what they wanted to hear.

he definitely exhibited numerous sociopathic characteristics.  i've never seen someone so obsessed with mining data about other people on the internet.  there's something inherently creepy and troubling about an individual who preaches about personal freedom, liberty, privacy, fairness, etc... and then takes it upon himself to arbitrarily decide who gets their personal info outed. he always hid his IP address when posting on the forum.  apparently, his own personal privacy was very important to him.  he didn't seem to think it necessary to extend that consideration to others.  a true narcissist.

sociopath or not i don't know.  the researching of data for fellow gabbies was creepy but to look at it a different way the target learned a valuable lesson: if you troll a forum you need to do a more than slightly adequate job of obscuring your indentity.  lesson learned for both parties.  perhaps

that's all very true.  couldn't agree more, actually.  it's just that you can't have some guy hanging around assigning himself the role of "resident PI."  regardless of whether the victims deserved it or not, it creates a creepy vibe that suggests this could happen to anyone if they should cross him.  this place makes pretty decent money, so i view the forum as a business.  he was very bad for business.  i wouldn't want to join a forum that kept creeps like that around.

i completely agree.  i remember when Hal get banned.  i had been away from coastgab.com for a few days and when i came back there was only the faint whiff of the shit storm that he'd stirred up. i can only imagine how disruptive that mess would've been.  or how freaked out the target would be

Wow, I must be some kind of stupid... (I like that line, Unquenchable Angst!)....

I signed onto this forum, chose a password that I thought unlikely to be broken, and now post often.  Should I be further encrypting my identify or source or whatever?

I try to say what I mean, mean what I say, not stomp needlessly on anyone's piggies, and, in general, try to be a good citizen.  I didn't think that some weird, angry person on the net might take anything I write so seriously as to try to cause havoc.

People are strange.

i would simply suggest people not reveal personally identifiable information.  i'd also suggest people mix up their online profiles.  in other words, it's probably not a good idea to use the same display name on every website you use.  it makes you very searchable, and from that point, someone could piece together a lot of information about you.  that's what he was doing to those he deemed worthy of his efforts.

i think he wanted everyone to be impressed with his research abilities.  "yay.  you know how to use google.  very impressive.  next, please."  that's my reaction.

Just found this thread... Ugh - this explains a few things.

I used to tease/flirt with a former Coastgabber in a good-natured way, but backed off when I noticed this banned user directing strange attention toward the person.  I was never sure whether his attention was welcomed by that individual - and it certainly wasn't my business - but regardless, in the words of Archibald Bunker, didn't want anything I said to be "misconscrewed".

I might change mine to El Jazmundo and wear a fake mustache. That should hide my identity.

Would that be the top secret bunker that is invisible unless you look exactly through the tiny crack between the wall of the massage palour and the safe house that the CIA use? It's a good job you don't bring a great deal of attention to it; Just having the one red neon sign and the blimp floating two hundred feet above the front door was a good precautionary move in my book.

I'm already recognizable and searchable, and just narcissistic enough not to mind.

Tried it once on Wednesday April 26, 2000 and got a migraine a few hours later. They scare me now.

In all seriousness, I'd prefer that to what currently resides two doors down to the right(which is 10 feet)...a sober house. And only half of that is accurate.
