Who is John Galt?

Just finished watching "Atlas Shrugged II". A very profound movie for our times. It's scary how Ayn Rand's vision has become/is becoming reality.

HAL 9000,

Didn't know that thread existed. Thanks for that link. The 2nd part was MUCH better than the 1st part. Look forward to the 3rd part - is there one? Never read the book.

That speech by the owner of the steel mill in front of that circus court almost had me in tears, but at the same time pumping my fist in agreement with his arguments

That scene is not too far in our future.

I have pleaded for friends to watch this movie; to tune into what is really happening apart what the SRM reports, but they are what Rush Limbaugh calls "Low-information voters".

Since I've not been in this thread before, I didn't see this and the other posts about Atlas Shrugged, pt. II. Perhaps you noticed my own, very similar mention in the "I'm watching..." thread. Glad to see there are one or two like-minded souls here. John Galt for King and all that.  :)

Yes, Rush calls them low-information voters. I always try to think of what to me would better describe these people who, tragically, now appear to be the majority. To me, it is not about low-information, but about cerebral development, and I mean that literally. Especially in the first nine years of life, the old cortex can be very well-developed, with lots of grooves being laid down, enabling critical thinking, the experience of subtle thought and emotion, and so on. What Rush calls low-information voters are the people whose brains were never developed in the first place, in addition to lacking education, and who lack all motivation to learn or expand their horizons. They arrive at adulthood with brains more akin to those of our reptilian predecessors. Thus, you explain something to them slowly and in simple language, and they stare at you with that now familiar dull bovine gaze (then reply in a surly manner and threaten violence). Hence, I think that rather than "low-information voter", we might better be served by a term like reptilian-Americans, or, in keeping with the C2C theme, simply reptilians. What think ye?

I think your point is reductive. It takes a very complicated issue and condenses it to they must be stupid". Rush likes to do that. It is quite simply lazy thinking, convenient but lazy.

First off the prefrontal cortex doesn't completely mature until well into the late teens to early twenties. Secondly, maybe the supposed slackers to some extent have it right. Much less rancorous conversations and more tolerance towards there fellow man... yes conjecture on my part.

A better approach may be to see those that don't get all excited about issues is because to some degree they feel disenfranchised. Again conjecture but no more so than they are less than thinkers. I have spoken with several over the years that are not interested in the electoral process and always the issue of issues becoming murky and more about opinion than fact. That double speak is some manner drives them away. I have to say there are times I feel getting the whole truth from candidates is impossible.

It is simply beyond dispute that the populace as a whole, including voters, are much less informed, and I think less well educated (and according to some social scientists even markedly less intelligent, although that sounds suspiciously like the usual politicized junk science we hear about every day, such as the "different brains" silliness), than at any time in the last 50 years. Probably the last 75 years. Maybe ever.

So life follows art, and we have an Idiocracy. Which is also why we have, as a class, the worst and most corrupt and incompetent group of elected officials in our history. Enjoy.

I think people eschew politics for many reasons. Are there stupid people? Yeah. But to dismiss those that choose to leave politics alone as being stupid... well where does that get us?

What I am getting at isn't that there aren't stupid people, but rather many choose to ignore politics because of the animosity and dishonesty.

I'm trying to get there.

Maybe as suggested a new racial [species?] classification is in order. They can wear an upside down lacoste insignia so we can differentiate them.
