Should the Dallas Cowboys be referred to as "America's Team" ? ???

It's that time of year again that I love to hate.  Millionaire athletes having to be coddled and prodded to not: brandish a gun at a strip club, break a coach/owner imposed curfew, overindulge in alcohol, use drugs, deal drugs, hit their mom, etc.

God, I hate the Dallas Cowboys.

"America's team" sucks pigskin.  And likes it.

P.S.

Tom Landry =  The Good

I have a preternatural hatred of successful anything, and the Cowboys were a team I loathed in my childhood. I remember their games vs the Redskins on CBS in the early 80's and the hype that came with them, and wished both of those team's charter flights could crash into each other like the disaster on the Canary Islands in '77. Goodbye to Danny White and Tony Dorsett, finito to Cathy Lee Crosby's boyfriend, farewell to Dave Butz and Harvey Martin etc.

          * We're going to see a professional sports team have a Marshall-like plane crash in the coming years. Jean Dixon predicted it years ago and she died on Super Bowl Sunday Eve in 1997. So there.. :-[

Being from Philly my hatred of the cowgirls is ingrained.

There was a time I think when Dallas was legitimately "America's Team" in that they were on tv every Sunday. In the late 70's and into the 80's folks wanted to see them play. Personalities, marketing and on-field success all kind of came together for them. It's interesting because at the very time that Sports Illustrated was calling Dallas "America's Team", the Steelers were fielding teams which won more Super Bowls (4 in 6 seasons) and had more HOF players (9 played on those Super Bowl championships teams, plus HOF Coach Chuck Noll) than any other has even come close to.

But for all of their success, Pittsburgh had sort of a negative vibe. Not anything like the viciousness of the Raiders of the same any era, or the criminality of the Ravens of the 90's or Bengals of the 00's; just not really funny or likeable. Dallas had excellent marketing, and the popularity of a down-home funny man like MNF announcer and former-Cowboy QB Don Meredith inured to Dallas's overall benefit. Go figure.

It's ironic that it wasn't too long after this, during the Barry Switzer no-holds-barred years, that "America's Team" had several members who maintained what amounted to an orgy house as their home-away-from-home party place. You know the kind of place - where a 6' 6" defensive end could unwind after a game; down a beer or 20 and do a gram of coke off a porno starlet's butt; and then join with a dozen of his buddies giving golden showers to the local talent. But by that time the "America's Team" stuff was pretty much over: the White House killed it off for good.

But Dallas could at least make an argument that at one time there was a basis to the name. Maybe it was all because of Tom Landry's warmth and good humor.

Fuck Dallas! I'm a Redskins fan, so you already know. As for athletes acting crazy, it makes room for new talent...

Convicted of killing teammate in DWI crash, Dallas Cowboys Josh Brent is sentenced to 10 years probation by they jury. The judge was disgusted by the light sentence and added 180 days in county jail (the most allowed in this situation.)

Brent was facing up to 20 years in prison; utilizing his right to allow the jury to decide the sentence was well played. The Cult of Cowboys Celebrity is alive and well.

Being a Bills fan since I can remember, (done laughing? good.) I was old enough to watch the Cowdouches beat my team two years in a row in the Super Bowl. Always had a special hatred for that team since then.

P.S. Suck it, Lett.

oh those where the days, the Dallas Cokeboys - well my steelers gave em one of their trophies in the 90's too, but so be it - even if they get another superbowl title and tie the steelers, unless they BEAT the steelers for that title, they have still lost 2-1 in superbowl matchups vs said steelers.  The Bills...whew..what to say...i remember thinking how heartbreaking that must have been to have my team go 4 times in a row and not be able to pull off ONE victory, i don't remember who else beat ya the giants and... 8)  :P

the Giants didn't beat us. physics did.

but yeah, four straight SB losses, no goal, and homerun throwback (forward pass). and it snows. but my people are resilient and we make the best wings, so.

also, respect for those '95 "Stillers." even though they killed the last legit Bills chance at playoff greatness. Neil O'Donnell was a badass.
