How's your "letting the inmates rule the asylum" tactic working out for you??

Maybe they had something better to do than peruse the swill here. Trolls like you .. well -- not so much.  ;D

Sure must be a supremely sad existence when all you have to do with your Saturday night is sling shit at Art and his family.  ::)

Hey phrodo you old ass licker,  how's it hanging? Was it you who advised Mr Bell to announce to the World his traumatised daughter had a YT channel? Maybe kick-start her child like ambitions to do just what daddy used to do? What do you think? Goading the stalker or maybe he's moved in with the Bells and all is well?

ah thank you, DP.
No problem  man, its true- You're stuff has a very unique feel to it.

This also illustrates why DMRN will fold. they're fucking stupid.

Has anyone contacted you to  have you make T-shirt designs, limited edition prints, coffee mugs and other MITD bullshit that they could sell in an online store that in reality takes zero overhead and minimal effort? They could help promote you (a true fan whos been doing doing professional quality work for them freely) and you could both make a little something on the side.

Handle shirts that have nothing to do with MITD as well, but have that 'acid feel' vibe and you have a shirt id like to own.

I bet you could make depictions of some of the major Art bell events (superglue, area 51 call, mels hole  and whatever) and sell lithographs and posters- Something you create once and then have a third party handle the rest, from printing to delivery and CC processing.

This is why we cant have nice things.

You ever think about trying to start a clothing line? Hoodies, T-shirts and such- I saw what you have posted on your website- You're the type who  could have alot of success with kickstart and could probably get funding quite easily to start something like that. Just a suggestion but if I had your talent thats what I would I would be doing asap - For what its worth.

Well at least you're willing to share the credit with the Archangel and are even willing to recognize my own part in helping to set that one up...Which really was quite good. I'm glad to have been a  part of this.

I've got a manager who handles all that. Sometimes I just hand my sketchbook over to him and he pulls what he thinks is cool out of it and prints it up.

MiTD is totally cool and was 100% down with stickers/posters/whatever. Without getting too much into it, conversations have been had.
Those guys are totally cool in my book. I know that you probably don't agree, and that's cool. I like having friends who don't agree with me.

I get shirts and prints going on and off. Toys too. I like to keep the runs limited, but my screen print guy keeps the screen on file just in case I want to go back and make another run.

Stickers are almost always just about promoting whatever the show is. Once I make a poster, I cut it up and make stickers too. I promote 2-3 shows a week. Posters go up on telephone poles and store windows, stickers go on flyer racks. I never use handbills because they're kind of obsolete at this point, though I know there are differing schools of thought on that. That's what the stickers are for. I never consider them merch. They're just a fun way of saying, "here, take this thing that you can stick on another thing, and look up the next time you walk past a telephone pole and remember that we've got a thing coming up."

The way I did the MiTD stickers and posters is the way I do every show. I've been doing it this way for over 25 years. These are tried and true methods for promoting punk bands and art shows. I don't know whether they're effective methods for radio shows yet. I guess time will tell. I offered the stickers because it's what I do anyway. When I believe in a band, my first thought is, "I want stickers". And then I make stickers so that I have shit I can stick on my bicycles and studio walls.

I do know that my target demographic (people between the ages of 20 and 30) is not necessarily MiTD's demographic. That was never more evident than at the International UFO Congress on Friday. I'm 43 years old and felt like the youngest guy there. I was wandering aimlessly around the place with stacks of Pork zine out of Portland (I distribute them in Phoenix) and MiTD stickers, wondering, "Are you fucking kidding me with this shit? Where are all the fun fuckers?" But I dropped 'em anyway and still had a good time doing it. Time will tell whether or not it was effective. I dropped about 800 stickers at the convention, but the vast majority of them were spread around head shops, record stores, and every hipster hole in the 30 mile radius. I'm curious to find out whether I was effective. Maybe I was, maybe not. I've said from the beginning that my goal is to reach people who've never heard of Art Bell, and that's still my goal.

I know I've talked about my lifestyle here in the past, and a few kind folks have picked up on that and written me PMs asking if I'm okay or need money or food or whatever. I totally appreciate the concern, but I'm good. I live way beneath my means, as a choice, not because of anything terrible that's happened. In my mind, I'm living like a king, doing exactly what I want to do, every second of the day. I've got a roof over my head and a crazy little shack that I paint in, and I love the shit out of my life.

Just curious... Was is strictly because of the age that there were no "fun fuckers" at the UFO congress, or is it just the type of person that an event like that attracted? ('Iv'e never been to one.)  I know that with age comes a distinct change in many peoples...  Hmmm... "thirst for life?", but do you still find places with an older demographic who are still fun?

Generally speaking, if I walk into a bar or a venue, and it's all people who are around my age or older, or even a few years younger, I'm usually gonna be like, "fuck this place". I don't know whether it's age or comfort level, but if there's just a roomful of middle-aged, pissed off people who are used to throwing money at problems and annoyed at new things, I'm probably just gonna leave them be.

The old dude in my hood who keeps calling the city every time new weeds sprout up in my yard is not someone I'm gonna give a shit about reaching out to. But people who call cops instead of handling their own shit, tattle-tales, etc... there are plenty of those types who are younger than me. So no, age isn't necessarily the issue. I go to plenty of awesome shows where the oldest guy in the room has twenty years on me. I guess it's more a matter of proximity to the suburbs than anything else.

So, let me ask you something. When I was a kid, I always wondered what kind of stuff the adults were talking about after I had to go to bed. Can I infer from your post that they were talking about the same kind of lunatic shit we talk about here? Or maybe just a different variety or brand? Because I thought at the time that they were always talking about serious things, like matters of state.

Well the talk was about what kind of mate or kids would be better off with. How fat and disgusting some of the people in our family had gotten and how if the were even having sex how they went about it ??? :o And laughing our ass off watching Johnny Carson as Carnac the Magnifecent! Back then they would play the National Anthem before the TV station went off the air at 12:30am, or if we were lucky they would have the Late Show, which was not a TV show, but old classic movies, best were the old Universal classics like, The Mummy, Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein. In our area we had the host know as "Ned The Dead" It was so cool when a local station added "Mystery Science Theater 300"! ;D

-Off topic (not that this threat has even really been'on topic'- And 'on topic' fucks the freeflow of ideas and conversation anyhow-imho) but how would you guys reach out to the younger generation? How would you replace your aging userbase?

radio is dead- It will be around for years but with less and less people tuning in every day. The tech is moving into a place where in the near future we will be able to be connected to the web almost everywhere, coast to coast with only pockets of places where AM/FM will be viable... Back in the day the discovery of new radio shows/bands and even whole genres of music  was something many of us learned of through channel scanning and much of our culture was actually being decided behind closed doors (who gets airplay, promotion, etc..)- So when the grunge scene (the gangsta rap scene, alternative and everything else)  seemed to just suddenly sweep the nation and culture in an organic way- It wasnt organic, wasnt new and was actually a carefully planned move- That was possible when we had gatekeepers monopolizing the airwaves outside of small college and pirate stations.

-Who listens to the radio now? All the commercials, the flipping channels, the garbage you have to wade through- Mostly old and poor people or truckers and travelers who have yet to adopt better tech to make their traveling a better experience. I do a bit of traveling at times and in the last decade ive only switched the radio on for checking traffic/news- I have podcasts, audiobooks, radio shows I have pirated and have no commercials (yeah, something they keep trying to fight which is working against them) and playlists of thousands of songs (again, no commercials) that I know I like- How do you compete with that? And this is a time when I cannot 'take my internet' with me everywhere- Something thats coming and will be viable. (yes, smarthones, laptops and shit allow this but thats not what i'm meaning here...)

How then, do you attract a younger audience to something they are not being exposed to in this world of entertainment overload  where our entertainment choices are totally custom to our already evolved preferences? And how do you get someone to even 'try something new'? Getting exposure is no longer as simple as having a few stations pick up your show so you are one of 20 shows on in a given area at that time and growing- Now you are competing with literally all shows, all the time, everywhere.

I have ideas but I want to hear other people- I think people like Alex jones (who I think is terrible)  is a fucking genuis who was able to see what was coming and figured out how to make this work for him- John wells, another guy I think is going to come out on top because he seems to understand something fundamental about where we are and where we are headed.

Idk, its an interesting topic to me. So I went off topic of the already off topic discussion.

scottydawg

I agree with you. over the decades I made mix tapes from LP's 45's and Radio shows to playing my car. Then got a car with a CD player built in. Bought a lot of CD's and even burned Cd's on my computer. Even had a Sirius XM handheld radio for awhile, but just like cable TV half the stations have commercials. Dumped them a year ago and they are still pestering me! Now my personal car and my patrol vehicle have USB ports that can read thumb drives and play the music thru the radio. So no more annoying commercials for overpriced diamonds, local used car salesman, or right now the stupid political campaigns. About the only thing I listen to live is George Knapp on his rare Sunday appearances, and Bob & Tom in the morning drive home! Radio is on the decline, most local radio personalities have other jobs on the side.

It's an interesting question. I know you didn't ask it to me, but I have some thoughts on the subject, observations....

So, when we started promoting for the blitz back in July, there were folks who saw Art's name on the poster and were immediately reminded of the glory days. That was cool. But the vast majority who saw/received the poster didn't know anything about Art Bell.

I started having listening parties. House parties, venues, at my studio, wherever. I still host 'em once in a while.  And what's probably unfathomable to people over the age of 40 who have loved and admired Art for decades, like myself, is that when Heather started hosting, people who were too young to remember Art or even really know what he's about didn't really notice much of a difference. Those of us who've spent a lifetime listening to radio know a talent like Art Bell when they hear it. But we're living in different times, and the vast majority of folks showing up at the listening parties don't really give a shit about radio. If they're listening to talk at all, it's mostly some pretty DIY podcasting.

Some folks have started listening to the show on their own. I don't know how many are Time Travelers. I don't really care about that. But they're not avid AM radio listeners. They never listened to C2C. They don't recognize the theme song as something from their past. They don't care about the bumpers. All that shit we love is totally meaningless to them. And to be honest, I find that kind of encouraging. So I kept promoting. It's fun. More stickers, more posters, more listening parties. We have a blast.

To be totally, 100% honest, if Art doesn't come back, I'm okay with it. MiTD has a host, and that's all that keeps me and a hundred other hipsters around here listening. The untrained ear doesn't know any different in 2016.

So...   You're from the land of beer and cheese-farts too ?    ;)

Chiller Theater kicked ass !  The Booth segments were the best.  "BRU...   BRU...     Mwa-mwa-mwa-mwa"  Ned even appeared a couple of times at the Carlton  before it burnt. Elvira modeled her show after Chiller.

Looks like they're bringing it back too.
