Put me in a situation where somebody is shooting at my family and I guarantee you that "civil and criminal liability" doesn't mean jack shit at that point.  Also given the fact that Art lives in the middle of nowhere I wouldn't expect a lot of children to randomly come along and trespass on his property.

You miss the whole point. As I mentioned if you are confronted by an intruder, or even someone just trying to make off with your property, in many places (especially TX) you can use force, even deadly force and, pretty much, be ok criminally. (You still could be sued civilly but likely won't go very far.) If people are shooting at you and you engage I think you'll be just fine if you defend yourself in Texas, Nevada, or most places.

I'm not a lawyer but only play one on tv. Haha. Here is some relevant laws in TX for you:

"Sec. 9.44.  USE OF DEVICE TO PROTECT PROPERTY.  The justification afforded by Sections 9.41 and 9.43 applies to the use of a device to protect land or tangible, movable property if:

(1)  the device is not designed to cause, or known by the actor to create a substantial risk of causing, death or serious bodily injury;  and

(2)  use of the device is reasonable under all the circumstances as the actor reasonably believes them to be when he installs the device.

I think the scariest thing at the moment is the Zika Virus. Brazil a Catholic nation is telling it's people to stop having Babies. Spread through mosquitos or Sex. If I were on air I would be all over it. I always said it would be the small things we need to worry over.
