Sounds like we have had similar experiences.  While I've had a good number of articles published, I've made more money (and had more fun) doing research for others.  Most fun was doing research for military/aviation artists.

Precisely, you find a niche and take the work you can find and you'll make a living writing if you're competent. That actually sounds like a cool writing career you've had.

Both, I've authored quite a few novels at this point. Not everyone that makes their living writing is a NYT best seller. In fact, most aren't.

Self-publishing, in today's age, is probably better than "hitting it big."   Bought my first condo with songwriting $$$ and I'd *NEVER* share it here. 

I can say this much, my bro-in-law is publicizing his book right now and he's getting a lot of promotion time and interviews...  Two hours on a satellite radio show (intermingled with music) later this week.  He's making money for himself and his publisher but the book's nowhere to be found on the NYT or Amazon top whatever lists.

Yes, only creative writing, but I won't lie, I'm pretty high strung. I don't think I would want it any other way though.

"Career" is too strong, more like a hobby I make a few bucks on.  The people I've gotten to meet and work with have been far more exciting than the money I've earned.  In some cases I have been overjoyed with an personalized autographed book or art print.

Yeah, that's true. If you know how to promote your book on the web, you can make tons of money self-publishing on Amazon or other places. "Wool" and "The Martian" were both originally self-published on Amazon.

Welcome back Art! After all the falderal, hurt and anger because of your abrupt leaving most of us were reacting because we blown the hell away! Thank you for coming back to face the masses and put this behind us. A lot of us have been with you since the beginning. You Sir are a close family member to this group and thousands out there. It was an amazing and exciting homecoming in July that had been anticipated for Years! You finally come back home, had an issue, then split without a word except I'm Done. Disbelief took over like a tsunami. We understood protecting yourself and most of all your Girls. It had to be terrifying. On the other hand and In the blink of an eye you could have had America's finest Snipers, Seals, Militia etc at your door within minutes to protect all the AB's for as long as you needed. Guess with the mindset you were in, who do you trust? But that's the passion of those that have been with you so long. Then enter the trolls. They took a horrifying and complicated situation and ran with it.  Horrible stuff said. Tempers flared and accusations thrown without proof.
I believe to my core the only way to get past this is to get back on that horse and do what is in your heart. I'm sure help is available if you need it for safety concerns. This might sound strange, but your family just doesn't consist of the 3 AB's, it's WORLDWIDE! That's a whole lot of love and disfunction. So much more to say. Just hope you're ready in the words of McCartney/Lennon to "Get Back Where You One Belonged"! You've been Chosen. Your path is in place and no matter the obstacles you encounter the Universe won't release you until the time is right! Hope to hear you on MITD really soon. Art, if your going to keep the show a float out of your own pocket, you should open up the archives to help bring in new listeners. If you want to attract new listeners, you got to open up the archives to allow them to listen when they want. We all know that MiTD is not the only show on the block, we have all kinds of podcasts and radio shows to choose from that give you free access to archives.

What made you use Coast to Cast AM intro for Midnight in The Desert. Don't you think it's tacky to use another radio show intro theme.  You sold the rights to C2CAM show to Premiere long time ago, you quit working for that network years ago. Were you afraid MiTD couldn't compete without using the same intro theme C2CAM uses.
