As I read your post Art, this movie popped into my mind ...    :o

What a great story.
I wonder if any of those kids ended up listening to your radio show - they'd have been in their 20's in the 90's.
That would be something. Especially if one called in.

This is one of those happier-ending stories you like to hear. It makes people feel good- a lot more than the new age self-hugging shtick some go with...

Yes I was that DJ. I was doing the Morning show for KENI in Anchorage. And yes I was part of the Airlift. I have a picture of me getting off the plane in Philadelphia with one of those children in my arms. The Anchorage Daily News arranged for me to speak with one of those young Men we brought back and we talked, he thanked me. He had just graduated from College and wanted to know how he got here.

ART, you put the 'A' in the phrase, "Fucking A Skippy!"

What a great act of compassion and decency! The fact that so many of us were unaware of this story goes to show that you did it for all the right reasons.

A real selfless act as opposed to all the self promoting "caring" we see bandied about these days.

Good on you, sir, for all you've done and will do!

This video having a picture of Alanis Morissette instead of Meredith Brooks makes me irrationally angry.

Alanis Morissette / Bitch (Meredith Brooks song)*

"Bitch", also known as "Nothing In Between", is a Grammy nominated song co-written with Shelly Peiken and recorded by American artist Meredith Brooks. It was released in May 1997 as the lead single from her debut album Blurring the Edges.

...................

"Bitch" is sometimes misattributed to Alanis Morissette, who was at the height of her popularity at the time of this song's release (having herself released Jagged Little Pill, her most successful album to date, two years prior), due to the similarity of her voice and musical style to that of Brooks. If the extreme of the good stuff is organizing an effort to save Vietnamese orphans and bring them to America than I REALLY want to know what the extreme of the bad stuff is haha

But seriously, thank you for sharing that story with us. What did the young man go to school for?

I was not a friend of Carlin's. But I watched almost, if not all of his appearances on television from my early adolescence. He was a genius with the spoken word. He also did seem to become more acerbic in his last years. But I remember he did a bit where he used the word fuck instead of kill for a joke in which he said "alright, sheriff, we are gonna fuck you now, but we are gonna fuck you slow." That's damn funny.

If by happenstance you come across one his "uncensored" videos or cds you'll find an incredible difference between what he did on tv and what he did at his live shows.

btw: He was interviewed on Coast, didn't have a problem with his swearing then either. But I can sympathise with the ban that was imposed on him and a few words he couldn't say for a while.

bad stuff... do tell

Away on the F word subject... over used, no longer shocking to hear. Like tats, It's so last century.
Should be regulated to non use status with words like, groovy, far out, neat, 23 skidoo.

Think of the grandchildren & great-grandchildren. For generations to come, the offspring of the rescued orphans will perpetuate family made possible by Art Bell.
Whatever "bad" Art may have done, (and haven't we all), will be far outweighed by the kind, loving, humanitarian gesture of rescuing those children who most certainly would have died at the hands of The NVA.

I always loved that story Art. I think I remember the photo you mentioned. It's a great shot of you with one of the kids you rescued and you are both looking off camera. Was it in the Art of Talk? Is that where I might have seen it? My copy is still at my folks house. I must retrieve it someday.

Agreed.  He discusses some of it in the Art of Talk, and despite my own having commented on some of it in the past, it's just not my business to judge anybody.  Besides, rescuing a plane full of kids from a war-torn country has to count for a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.

I know, Right?  Counts for a little more than helping an elderly lady cross the street.

It seems to me in this situation there is a conflation of both verbal and behavioral profanity. To add, the behavior described is much more profane than the actual language.
It is sort of the point though.  Quite often (usually?) the two are closely linked.  There is a time and place that even that level of conversation would not even cause me to blink (I have been in / worked in some dives.)  Hell, I may even have chuckled at points- but not in the middle of the day at the DMV.

The point is that you are never going to hear somebody behaving in that manner using the words "coitus."  Nor are you ever going to see somebody using that level of profanity behaving like a perfect lady (or gentleman.)  The two are, on some level, linked.

Wow check this out.  Hear Art talk a little about the events of the airlift out of Saigon.

Sort of related, and worth reading: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/whats-behind-decline-celebrity-talk-791610

QuoteWhy are so many star-driven talk shows failing? Many blame the cost of launching with an A-list personality and a chasm between modern celebrity and the appeal required to keep viewers day in, day out. "It's the chemistry between the host and the producers and with the audience," says CBS daytime head Angelica McDaniel. "Viewers pick up on that."

In other words, you have to be likeable. Pretty simple.

QuoteLatifah received a huge promotional launch from Sony TV and a strong station lineup but lasted only two seasons. "People liked the personality she demonstrated in movies," says a TV syndication distribution executive, "but that's not who she is. One thing about daytime: You can't fake it."

Ding ding ding. If you're a loudmouth prick, be a loudmouth prick. But a loudmouth prick trying to come off as friendly and affable doesn't work unless you're a great actor, and even then you can't keep it up all the time. This is even more true in radio - the voice conveys so much information about the speaker.

Quote"These talk shows are with celebrities who have huge name value," says David Perler, executive producer of Wendy, "but the name value doesn't hold up. If you can't deliver and you don't have strong opinions and you just want to talk niceties with celebrities on the couch about their upcoming projects, I don't think people want that anymore."

In other words, softball interviews about who-gives-a-shit topics. Sound like anyone we know?

On the changing nature of celebrity in the social media environment:

Quote"We see actors and celebrities more in real life than in their work environment," adds Perler, "because of the exposure in social media, the tweeting, Facebook and all the shows that show them unmasked. So it's not fascinating to tune in just because Harrison Ford is on the couch."

QuoteEven star-driven shows are changing. The Wendy Williams Show, which lures more than 2.1 million viewers a week, took off when the host extended her "Hot Topics" chat segment to as long as half of the program. It also went live.

"If you're not live, you just miss the boat," says Williams, "and the ability to talk about things like what happened last night on Dancing With the Stars."

Apparently in agreement with Art.

I don't think there is a way to separate the actions in your telling of the event. I see it as crass behavior in total. It isn't the word fuck that makes that situation crude. It is the totality of behaviors. I can make lascivious statements by saying I would like to lick your ice-cream.

Hi Art,

Think about a show with a dedicated line for those rescued Saigon children.  It would be interesting to hear about their lives.   Many of us remember those times.

I agree, it would be very interesting to hear, but Art is too humble. He's already said, he will not toot his own horn.
We listeners/fans may have to work out that reunion. How would we go about it?
