"The music industry is just a mess of greedy, sleazy corporations and individuals."
Actually 99% of all industries are a mess of greedy, sleazy people who work their underlings until they can get new ones for cheaper, and dispose of them when they are no longer needed. They do not benefit the "people" at large, they only increase their overinflated salaries for micromanaging others whilst contributing nothing. A giant sucking sound is the only thing emitted from them. There are a million ways of doing things better to benefit all, but "none of that, it would cut our profits" My $2.00.

Yikes... that certainly isn't the Business world I'm familiar with.
If someone has the education /experience, people skills and work ethics, I'll get them a job with a company that hopefully they'll want to be employed by and retire from.

On the other hand, owning a Business is no bed of roses. Take all the risks, always on the mind, have to innovate and grow, be fair to employees so they'll be loyal, on and on it goes and the reward is what? Extra income that mostly gets plowed back into the Business.

Excellent Art! That should be Bellgabers and Fort Rock's Scorpion Army official theme song.
"Monsters of the World Unite"

We have met the monster and he is us.

Especially the unexpected comment about his clean show.

It was that moment when all the kids in class would go "OOOOHHHHHHHH!!"

The beauty was in the complete shut down of the topic with 6 words.

That's a great observation! I just want to add one thing I noticed in Art's bellgab comments. He's an accomplished writer, as well.
Thanks!  Admittedly, like most of you, I've listened to countless hours of Art Bell.  I think, because of that, I "hear" him speaking when I read his comments here.  There's not much left on radio that's nearly as entertaining to me as that.   :)

So true. We've organized our whole society around the principal of 'fiduciary responsibility.' Profits Uber Alles. Anything goes as long as it increases share price and personal fortunes. "It's just business bro, don't take it personally." Disgraceful, really. Any Sims player could easily design a better world with the resources we possess.

So false... you know little more than the person you quoted. Look around, you're living better than royalty and super rich did, just a hundred years ago. Go ahead drive your car, take plane, go on cruise. Not enough, sky dive, learn to fly an airplane, shoot a machine gun, get a dirt bike, speed boat, go fishing, buy a farm, get high, rescue a dog, read a book, watch TV, go to a movie, help a kid, start a family, start a Business, relax, listen to Art Bell.

Tell that to the growing number of Americans who are virtually homeless.

Art, didn't you once tell a story about how you nearly poisoned yourself on air, and were eating bread to absorb the poison.
Was that a story in your book? Or did you tell it on air? Or do I have the whole thing wrong?

I recall that, or something similar - shattered glass from a broken coffee Thermos?

He was in Southeast Asia wrestling poisonous snakes live on the air.

He took a bite from a viper or something.

Art Bell

Yes, I drank a lot of coffee while on the air and because I have a headset mike just a couple of inches from my mouth I use a straw. One night I looked down at my coffee after taking the top off the cup and saw a million tiny pieces of ground glass and knew I had been drinking it ! So I asked and people said eat bread which I did! You all have good memories, that was at the Union Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas. I did the show for 10 Years there.

That's actually more cool than my SEA cock fight with a venomous snake story. 8)

Any plans for more books? A tell all update to the Art of Talk? ;)

I really enjoyed The Art of Talk. I think I nearly read it in one sitting.

Art Bell

Who knows, I might write another, it takes a LOT of time. Also I am kind of brutally honest when I write so I am not sure I should do it again, there is much to say about how the Sirius/XM deal went down and IHateart Radio. I know much more that went on behind the scenes now thanks to a couple of honest people but I think I will let it rest for the moment.

The best way to vindication is to simply do a good show, everything else will work itself out.

Art, besides Ed Snowden.  What most controversial figure would you most want to interview?
Oh. And what was your old callsign before W6OBB?

That is interesting. I didn't know they had radio studios there.

Art Bell

Well first I was KN3JOX, then W2CKS and now of course W6OBB and in the Philippines I am 4F1AB. I also held a 1st class Radiotelephone ticket which is now a General.

Radio has been a lifelong love.

I don't know much about ham radio - but why the change of call signs? I was just thinking that once you got one assigned it was yours and "you" from then on.

YNOT

Hey Art,
I've often wondered what subject matter you most like to cover on your show. And looking back, which shows have stuck in your mind the most.

(One of my personal favorites was the Trumbell County ufo sightings. Because I live in the area it made it especially spooky to me.)

Anyway, Thanks for being so accessible here...It's giving us our fix for now...

Art Bell

Well call signs used to be based on where you live, now you can keep them even if you move, within limits.

Art, thanks for answering our probing questions, you're being very tolerant of you fans!

I like writing actually, I have to proofread like crazy though, because I always type a lot of errors, but I recently took a journalism type class and did quite well in it, and my sister, an English teacher, said I should write more!  I truly admire anyone working in the "word craft", be it text, TV, or radio.  I, my own self, have things to say, but honestly, I'm more interested in hearing what others know and want to share, I am inquisitive.  When I met my wife and fell in love, I marveled at how quiet she could be until that exact moment that something truly important needed to be said.  She's a classic Filipina with the traditional values and ideals, and yet I am forever encouraging her to not feel she should have to be demure, and in turn, she cools my heals when I need to hear it.

What is your favorite Pinoy food?  I like Caldaretta and of course, Pancit, and halo-halo.  But there is one Filipino food I refuse to touch, that's anything with squid, squid horrifies me, it's GROSS!  I'll eat Dinaguan, Balut, but NOT SQUID!  My girl has promised me that she'll only eat it when I'm not around because I think it smells bad.  But I love Chili peppers and she hates them, so we have a truce, a good relationship is all about boundaries, right?

I'm really glad your coming back on the scene, often at night my brain is way too active and since I am naturally inquisitive, it's good to hear a good questioner ask stuff I want to ask.  In the show request thread I put a bunch of show ideas, one is that I'd love an interview with Neal Stephenson, the writer of _Snow Crash_ and other incredible SciFi stories.  The man has an active imagination like me, when I was younger I would constantly come up with stuff like he does.  The protagonist in one of his stories falls in love with a Filipina like you and I have.  Part of the story is set there.

I should add that my second favorite movie is _South Pacific_, the 50's rendition.  Bali Hai!!!

Art

Oh - OK ... so kinda like W for East of the Mississippi and K for West - for radio and TV stations? How's does that work for Ham since you're West and you're a W now?

sydtron

Yup. So how did you get the 6 then?
Thought that was reserved for California?

And did you try UHF VHF during the Aurora a few days ago?  I heard some guys on the east coast got into Europe!!

Art Bell

Well the only food I can not take are the very small fish which I call stinky fish and that is being kind, while cooking they can clear a House so I insist they be cooked and eaten outdoors! Otherwise I like most all the
food.

Ramona my Wife of 16 years was half Filipina, God rest her Soul. Now Airyn The Teenager they say (Now 31 Years old) is wonderful. My guess is without her I would not still be here. I will not get into a big deal about it here but if they make better Woman for a Wife I have no idea where. I was introduced to her by my Brother
in law who is Married to her Sister and who is also a Ham.

Hey Art, have you ever given much thought about having a Ghost Writer? That way you will be able to chronicle, organize, and assess your thoughts, feelins', and observations about various things, places, and people. And a chance to add your bucket list.  ;)

oh, and sorry for writing in a song on the open talk thread instead of on the music thread.

I'd love another book by you! You still have a lot of life left and more chapters to write, God willing.

Good SIT on tonight with callers from the UPS strike.
Art wasn't dependent on some guy trying to promote a book like GN and pretty much everyone else in radio is today.

Art,

Jorch has a good ghostwriter.

She wrote his cookbook.

She saved Jorch a lot of time.  And apparently saved herself a bunch of time also.

This is what happens when talent falls though a portuhl.

I also might not be in this world if hadn't met my Cebuana, she's taught me patience and wisdom, too, she is my world, she and our kids (we just rescued a baby and we're adopting her).

I'm very happy for you Art.  In summary would it be fair to say the secret to happiness is Ham Radio and finding a good Filipina?  8)
