It's an interesting question. I know you didn't ask it to me, but I have some thoughts on the subject, observations....

So, when we started promoting for the blitz back in July, there were folks who saw Art's name on the poster and were immediately reminded of the glory days. That was cool. But the vast majority who saw/received the poster didn't know anything about Art Bell.

I started having listening parties. House parties, venues, at my studio, wherever. I still host 'em once in a while.  And what's probably unfathomable to people over the age of 40 who have loved and admired Art for decades, like myself, is that when Heather started hosting, people who were too young to remember Art or even really know what he's about didn't really notice much of a difference. Those of us who've spent a lifetime listening to radio know a talent like Art Bell when they hear it. But we're living in different times, and the vast majority of folks showing up at the listening parties don't really give a shit about radio. If they're listening to talk at all, it's mostly some pretty DIY podcasting.

Some folks have started listening to the show on their own. I don't know how many are Time Travelers. I don't really care about that. But they're not avid AM radio listeners. They never listened to C2C. They don't recognize the theme song as something from their past. They don't care about the bumpers. All that shit we love is totally meaningless to them. And to be honest, I find that kind of encouraging. So I kept promoting. It's fun. More stickers, more posters, more listening parties. We have a blast.

To be totally, 100% honest, if Art doesn't come back, I'm okay with it. MiTD has a host, and that's all that keeps me and a hundred other hipsters around here listening. The untrained ear doesn't know any different in 2016.

The times have a ton to do with it, as do rose tinted glasses. Arts an incredible broadcaster but he was monopolizing on the times just as Alex Jones is today. Would Art bell even work today if you handed him C2C back , 5 night a week? sadly, I think not- I think GN is more fit for that position with the current times and thats not because of ability/talent or anything else- its just the reality.

Art bridged the gap between conspiracy theory/paranormal and news- Into something more mainstream. Most of us (unless we were running around in the woods with the militia or hardcore UFO aficionados) never head heard anything like this- I hadnt. I loved UFO/paranormal/Crypto type books but they were few and far between and certainly not to the depth that was available to hearing amazing interviews with interesting people for hours each night.

It worked because of the time- yes, I knew Ed Dames was bullshit but that little part in my mind could still suspend my disbelief enough to think...maybe- And it was scary and fun and interesting. Now, anyone under 30 who takes an interest is googling, making that suspension of disbelief impossible to reach- And it kills it. I'm not saying this is good or bad- It is what it is. its reality.

It also worked because the internet hadnt reached the technology to do streaming.video and everything else-Plus the internet was not mainstream but was the domain of the geek and very much a different thing alltogether than this all encompassing everything that it is now- And as real life and online begin to merge and the lines start to blur- Everything that isnt the net will adapt or die a death. Cable and radio included. No broadcaster has the capacity to save this.

I disagree though about the 'talk radio' - I think this is coming back and expoloding- Just not on the radio. When I was a teenager I was very odd for preferring AM radio to music and none of my friends listened to audiobooks (which were on casette , unwieldy and expensive) or talk anything- mainly music. I see the younger generation embracing sooooo much more than music and this included talk although there is usually video attached  ;)

I preferred AM too. We had an alternative/punk station here in Phoenix on AM around 1989-1992 and I listened all the time. When that folded, I switched over to the easy listening station. To this day, I can't fall asleep without that static AM hum in the background of whatever I'm listening to.

In some ways I agree. When I tell folks in their forties and fifties about how cassette tapes have made a huge comeback among millennials, they trip out. We remember those things as being total pieces of shit. Kids see them as trading cards for their favorite bands. And they're right.

There's huge potential for the novelty of AM/FM radio that few in the industry really seem to be capitalizing on (aside from the dude a few miles from here broadcasting the best pirate radio station I've ever heard in my life). It's usually when "industry insiders" claim that a medium has died that it only really starts getting interesting. What I meant was that the quality of the sound itself doesn't mean nearly as much to better ears that it did/does to us. I have a hard time listening to podcasts that were recorded on iPhones or headset mics, but a lot of folks don't.

Well the talk was about what kind of mate or kids would be better off with. How fat and disgusting some of the people in our family had gotten and how if the were even having sex how they went about it ??? :o And laughing our ass off watching Johnny Carson as Carnac the Magnifecent! Back then they would play the National Anthem before the TV station went off the air at 12:30am, or if we were lucky they would have the Late Show, which was not a TV show, but old classic movies, best were the old Universal classics like, The Mummy, Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein. In our area we had the host know as "Ned The Dead" It was so cool when a local station added "Mystery Science Theater 300"! ;D

If you change Carson to Cavett, do you figure all the rest was pretty much the same? This might just knock my parents right off the Pe-DESS-tal they were on.

I think Pirate stations are going to make a big comeback. I thought micro FM (or whatever thats called) was going to take off more than it has but I think its one of those things that could evolve.

Yeah, as things wane radio stations are going to do all kinds of things to try and stay relevant and we could end up with some great radio- DMRN could have been one of those places where interesting content was coming from- But the money that was once there, the marketshare, the audience- Those things are gone and the overhead for running radio stations is probably  higher.

I have no part or knowledge of the industry beyond what everyone else has but like how you mentioned the cassette tapes and the overall movement of analog being trendy in some discerning circles means these things will stay alive and there will still be profit to be made and an audience for these products- In fact, the more niche it becomes the more profit can be made for alot of different people rather than a few corporations- It will never be something that isnt niche again and digital will outsell anything analogue except in certain circumstances- And they cost far less to produce (this is coming for books, movies and every other physical media in time).

The profit margins of old are gone- the days of Radio personalities making Art bell/Howard Stern/Rush money are very limited. This isnt a bad thing though. rather than a few very rich radio hosts we will have a plethora of people sharing the wealth and more interesting content as the creme rises to the top. I think there is a disconnect here and corporations will lose this because they are trying to protect profit margins. And I think this will benefit all of us.

Interesting times to come though. These are golden days for the consumer in a sense when it comes to entertainment and I think its going to get better and better.

Mr. Bell should be so lucky.  All hail MV.

Heard a lady hosting Coast to Coast last night and she was alright.  I mean, my standards have been completely fucked since hearing Heather, but I think she was alright.

Can we get a guest host or something on MitD?  Heather probably doesn't wanna give up one single shift because if she does she knows she'll get Wally Pipp'd.

Such as? An appeal to give Heather a chance because she's doing great? Or maybe throwing out a reward to catch a stalker?

Monday morning at work and I expect to be catching up because I was busy all weekend and only three pages? It reminds me of the gif below.

I don't know what all the griping about the "it's dead in this hear thread" is all about.

I found it refreshing to not have to scroll through 78+pages of chaff to find the pertinent wheat nubbet of something about Art's daughter having a YouTube channel.  I did happen to hear on MiTD that Art is working on some "liners(?)," I assume that means he's going to record some bits about guests and what-not for MiTD?

Art is baby-stepping his way back on air?  Sounds good.  If it were me in my 90s or whatever age, I would totally get a full-time "fill-in" host for my show, but would reserve the right to snatch the microphone back unannounced for some guest/open-lines-topic that caught my crotchety old-man fancy.  It would be MY business model and I wouldn't give a damn because I could do what I enjoy, if that's HAMming it up most nights or spending time with the family with the occasional live show 'cuz that what I've worked my life to do and I like it, so be it.  Try and stop me, who cares if there's an audience or not?

Although, for drama that is pretty weak-sauce.

I also learned today that ignore was disabled?  I apologize to everyone that had to scroll-thru this post, or had an OCD moment and were forced to read it in it's entirety.  While I don't feel your pain, I do sympathize.
