Listening to that I kept wondering how he can possibly complain about cell phone connections.  The static and interference almost caused me to lose my hearing...

I just don't get ham radio in the digital/Internet age we live in. Is it nostalgia?

Art used to bitch and moan about young people not being into Ham Radio but how can talking to a guy from Sweden over a shitty sounding connection compare with shooting hookers in a video game? It's not even a fair contest.

I think it's a combination of nostalgia and the confidence that if the grid fails and society goes to hell, you as a Ham radio operator will still be able to receive vital news and information from outside of your little compound or community.  I think it comes down to the self-sufficiency ethic.

Ms. C

Well static or no static ... it was GREAT to hear the real Art Bell's voice again .... this put a smile on my face (although I have to something about the left-over echo of that annoying static in my ears!)

paladin1991

Huh.  'Video removed by user.'  Must have signed a non-compete.

Heather Wade

Dammit.  What was the title of the video?  Was this the only one?

We had a few ham operators in the neighborhood when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s.  They were invariably the "get my off lawn" guys; the loners, and they didn't give a damn that they ruined the neighborhood TV and radio reception.

I'm guessing that could be a problem for Art's neighbours.

That reminds me of my childhood years also, VG.  I remember whenever we had really bad, unavoidable interference on radio or tv, we knew it was some ham operator in the neighborhood.  I never knew any of them, but would have liked to strangle them if I had.  ::)

I just went to Art Bell.com, and I am getting an art website,
as in pictures, frames, etc.  What gives?

in The upper right hand corner it says, "why am I seeing this under construction page".

perhaps keith took it off line to make some updates/changes?

Or was Art pissed off keith let Jimmy Church use DMRN to parlay into a weekend guest host job at C2C and told Keith to get lost?

Surmo

Ah, yes, good catch on the upper right note, I missed it.

Best bet is Keith took it down for the planned changes that were/are in the works.  Seeing it late at night, I thought someone failed to pay the mandatory fee.

I think Art and Jimmy are in periodic communication, so I doubt any "pissivity" is going on.

other users are reporting the website is fine for them.

Are you using firefox? They released a new browser update, have not got it yet.

Surmo

You must be right about Firefox.  I can see the site fine on my laptop, but my desktop shows the page you just posted.

Morgus

I'm getting the regular Art Bell Dark Matter webpage right now with Firefox v33.03 (latest update)

paladin1991

NO problemos acqui.

Scully

Using Chrome and seeing the Under Construction page here.

bateman

Yeah, I'm not getting anything either.

Surmo

I just installed Chrome two hours ago.  That must be the problem here.

clear your cache's people who can see the page.

I emailed keith, asked him why it was down....

he responded by saying "ask art"....

Art is upset about DMRN hosting Jimmy Church after he agreed to do C2C, only logical explanation.

Okay.  It's down for me now that I did that.

MV/Liberace!

I think the dns for artbell.com has been changed to point the domain name to some advertising network or something. You should all start seeing something similar after your dns has time to update. WTF is going on here?

HOOOOOOOOOO BOY

MV/Liberace!

I have a feeling this is going to be an interesting GabCast episode coming up on Tuesday.

Surmo

I uninstalled Chrome, and cleared out my cache, but still cannot see anything but the construction site.  Have to work on the Firefox possibility tomorrow, too late for me to pursue this further tonight.

HOOOOOOOOOO BOY

well, I guess this means Art is not returning on DMRN.

Surmo

Does sound like Jimmy C stepped on his ying-yang after all with Art.

'ask art'   Thanks bubba.  Tells me you don't know why either.    Art being upset?  I get that.
