This past week a local story went national. Some dude near me killed a snapping turtle with a hammer and someone filmed it. He claims self-defense (ridiculous) though in the past, at least in rural areas, farmers would kill them (thinking they eat the fish or even bite your toes.) I think they are cool and wouldn't kill them. But there was more outrage than after latest European Muslim attack. But anyway, first thing I thought of was Norry's turtle incident. He also claimed self-defense response.

Doesn't surprise me.  Sorta like how, often times, some of the biggest animal rights proponents are also ardently pro-abortion.  I'm against animal cruelty too it's just funny to see the inconsistency activists sometimes show.  GNS.

The thing is that Town Lake Lady Bird Lake is right downtown, for the most part, and not some lake in the country or his own stock tank on his property. (It is not 'really' a lake but a dammed portion of the Colorado River so narrow with running paths, bridges, parks, on most sides. Not some rural location. So, basically, yuppies out jogging and people taking a break from work and moms with their kids at the park could witness this dude hammering a turtle to death. I'm guessing he is somewhat demented and also thinks the snapper was taking too many fish? A decade or so ago we had to 'update' the rules because, primarily, Asians were taking way too many turtles from our waters for their food markets.

Oddly most strays I've seen or see down at the shelter for adoption (now a 'no kill' -so severely over-budget and demanding even more tax $) are listed as "pit mixes" or "terrier mixes" (usually they throw in a "Lab mix" or something in hopes a sucker will take home the beast. I'm guessing even the most Kung-fu types or coyotes or even mountain lions won't take them on.) Coyotes, Illegal's and "youth" dog fighting rings (they steal dogs to "train" their dogs,) etc get the rest. Amazing, sort of sad when you clearly see some child wrote the sign, for missing cats and small dogs in my "hood." Now, like a New Years Prediction on Ian's show of some years ago, some coyotes are not even afraid to lurk around in broad daylight. Not rabid even, but becoming top predator or comfortable, I guess.
