You might recall that for many users, the ignore feature didn't work at all until recently.  I'm glad it's fixed now, although it doesn't remove quotes from that individual from by non-ignored users.

The ignore function isn't perfect. If it's one person causing trouble, then it shouldn't be up to everyone else to take steps to avoid that person's conduct.  A troll can still wreck a forum even if everyone does their best to ignore them.  I've seen it happen.

You're right about the ignore feature, although I'm quite satisfied with the system we have. We definitely do not want moderators, who almost always prove the aphorism about power and corruption. And a troll definitely can destroy a forum.

i believe i've stepped in it.  i don't mean to suggest anyone who has ever reported a post is a cunt.  quite to the contrary, actually:  i depend on people reporting posts because i can't be here reading every post all the time, and i'm not going to bring in moderators.  what i was referring to are people who report other users just based on a vague, generalized "i don't like this person" type of thing, but not any specific terms of service violation.  tos violations are the only reported posts i want to see.  ever.  also, i'm not having a good day today, and my posts likely reflect that... so i'll probably soon regret half of what i've typed this afternoon.

true.  i also hate how the ignore feature only removes what the ignored user said, but it still allows you to see that the person has posted something.  i reeeally hate that.  if i were to ignore a user, i would want them to be dead to me.



it should be said that there does need to be some degree of moderation.  there are certain things a forum shouldn't want people to see if it ever hopes to get new blood.  these include clique behavior, flaming, paranoia, random hostility, etc...  there's just a lot of stuff you don't want prospective new members to see because they'll potentially get the wrong idea and move on.  i personally would probably not sign up to this forum if i were to first read some of the stuff some people have been posting recently.  my posts from earlier probably didn't help matters... but it builds up.

I doubt if Snorge personally answers many emails, what with him being so busy doing 8 or so hours of meticulous show prep and spending countless hours selflessly helping needy C2C listeners. He probably has some high school freshman reading them and responding to haters with simplistic put-downs. For the record, and I just reread every post since the "Lilly Chronicles" reached temps approaching nuclear fusion, I never posted personal information on Lilly WickedGame Artsy Dex. I was actually a little surprised when someone else confronted her with her occupation/location. Now, of course I already knew this, as I thought she was a bit odd and terribly caustic, but kept my knowledge a secret.

As to the moderator issue, CG had a few moderators some years ago - turned into a disaster. The details are unimportant - but trust me, when a mod, other than the admin steps in, it can and usually does erupt into a power argument, something I certainly wouldn't want to be a part of. I'm not positive, but I thought I heard on a podcast that EvB said she was still a moderator - but could be wrong.

For the most part, the above quotes are quite reasonable, minor quibbling aside. I think we self-police around here pretty well. In the not-so-distant past, we had some similarly caustic/corrosive members, who tended to be "newish" - Blutsauger, and that dude who said he was a filmmaker who visited Cannes (turns out he was a filmmaker - but an extremely odd one; I have a link to his movie) whose name I can't remember, Widget, and maybe one other...  while they were quite disruptive, they were dealt with appropriately, and so far as I know, never came back. The recent disruption is different  only in the fact this person, once dealt with, comes back by morphing into new characters. C'est la vie

I am an extremely strong proponent of b_dubb's and others' view that, the key to handling these is to simply: DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. You don't even need to use the ignore feature - just resist the temptation to respond, and the situation will likely take care of itself. If not, MV will step in and fix it. This is not to say you mustn't/shouldn't defend yourself when attacked, but as I've mention with respect to our resident Pud, being baited to feed the trolls could actually make you the bait, which is unbecoming.

Well, now back to our regularly-scheduled programming. Really.

NOTE: too bad the new Radio Trainwreck Show is on at 2000 EST - right when the hockey game starts - and I think my dad would think it's weird if I went into the guest room knowing I was going to participate in a web podcast from a forum I belong to     Maybe I can pop in for 17 minutes between periods.
