I'm with you on treating teachers well.  I'd like to see the money spent on the classroom and on the people teaching the kids.  Everyone would, except the people making the decisions on how to spend the money.

My response was to someone saying the Republicans 'made teachers the enemy'.  Ridiculous.

I know, P*B. My observation was that a union would have been a buffer against the abuse that's going on right now in my school and others. Because we have no common voice, the people who make the decisions about our futures are able to exploit this and get rid of people who've spent their entire lives teaching, because they're at the top of the pay scale, deservedly so. The pay scale in this particular private sector still doesn't match the public, although we knew that when we applied. What we didn't know is how callously we'd be betrayed and thrown under the bus.

Oh, degrees schmegrees, UC.  Don't you know that textbooks --and the teachers who use them-- are properly used to buttress the message of fundamentalist-"Christian" churches?  Hey, churches in the U.S. are losing membership, so if the little bastards won't show up on Sundays, we gotta get 'em the 5 days when they aren't paying attention!
Fundamentalist leaders keep social power primarily through controlling their members' worldview.  Nothing threatens a religious fundamentalist, of whatever professed religion, more than options for the youth of their group.  And empirical science-- as an option to "revealed knowledge" and faith-- is an especially scary option, because it specifically stresses decision-making based on real observations.  And when presented with the real facts of life, and allowed to make a decision, what kid would choose to stick with an oppressive fundamentalist church and lifestyle?

So yeah, UC-- it's best to just shut up and let them deacons and choir-member moms in Texas make your textbook decisions.  It's your job to make it easier for them to inculcate faith in their spiritually-imperiled youth.

Take this as a very indirect "Amen" (no pun intended) to Nowhere's cheerleading for political activism.

The ironic part of this is that Catholic, Lutheran and Episcopalian schools all teach evolutionary science in the classroom because it's science. It scares me no end that there are people willing to send an entire generation of students into the future as virtual science illiterates, at a time when a grasp of science is becoming increasingly complex and necessary for our survival.

Not to mention Tea Party Standard Bearer Michelle Bachmann's War on Evolution:

After destroying our economy, now in the midst of destroying education, is there anything else conservatives can do to ruin America?
I watched Ham debate Bill Nye about Creationism VS Evolution.  It's disturbing that in 2014 you have to have someone debate the merits of science with someone who's basically advocating hocus pocus and superstitions. Ham's defense was basically "Because Bible".  And word games.

It's disturbing when removing the teaching of critical thinking skills becomes part of a political party's platform as it did in Texas. Without being able to measure evidence and ask questions, we'll have even more people who believe their deity hid dinosaur bones in geological strata as a test of their faithfulness in believing the earth is 6,000 years old. I wish I were making this up, but I'm not, any more than those who now want to teach children that Noah took two dinosaurs on the ark. The sad part is that one political party made a deal with the devil when it courted these literal fundamentalists and now that they've won school board, local and state elections, we are in danger of losing a generation of scientists. Because the bible says it's so is a woefully inadequate answer to fundamental scientific questions.

Scary. Why do so many homophobes get 'gay' and 'pedophile' confused? If you are not intelligent enough to know the difference, you certainly should not be involved with creating political platforms or legislating in any way.

Oh that's easy to answer. They do it because a) they're terminally uneducated b) REALLY uneducated c) bigoted towards anyone who isn't them. Much much easier to spout to other uneducated and uninformed bigots something that isn't true than actually spend time and invest that learning shit in finding out the difference. It also has a two fold benefit; It lets the paedophiles in the families of the same bigots screw their daughters from aged 6 until they're old enough at aged 13 to have a 'wholesome' relationship with another god fearin uneducated bigot.

It's called the Big Lie, designed to appeal to the ignorant and bigoted and it works because that's what that segment wants to believe. This is why I rejoice every time one of these creeps is caught in a public men's room with a "wide stance."

Likely because such august organizations such as NAMBLA was so important in the beginning of the homosexual rights movements including participating in the early marches, organizations, the revered Stonewall Riots and at the start of the organization "International Lesbian and Gay Association" at the UN and was defended by people like Ginsburg (Allen that is- not the Supreme Court justice.) Similar loathsome organizations like NAMBLA have been involved in the BLT movement in Europe and even founded political parties like the PNVD in Holland.) It took some decades for, finally, more mainstream homosexual parties and activist groups to distance themselves from such pedophile groups. A conspicuous long time.

Because they should never have had to in the first place.  Guilt by association?  Silent assent?  That's your rationale?
This stems from the idea that people (consenting, adult people) need your permission to live their lives.

Another study that presents information and is read by someone with a preexisting bias leading to a very subjective conclusion... kudos.

Look, definitions are all over the place. So let's be honest. Having sex with someone of the same sex is plain and simple homosexuality. But that isn't the whole truth... far from it. So to make the blanket statement that homosexuals have a greater propensity... well it smacks of "now I gotta good reason for hating fags." When really what you have is a good reason to be concerned for inappropriate sexual contact with children by some percentage of men.

But all of us use a certain amount of reasoning in everyone of our daily tasks, even them no good homosexuals. When someone decides that sex with a child makes sense; there sexual identity isn't the causal factor. But give anyone with a sub 80 IQ and blammo it is the queers.

Oh and by the way Freund... there is some good reading. No really: plethysmography... Who knew? I have been doing some variation of that all my life. Preferential rape is a good subject too, no really, funny aside, good reading.

Hey look Ben; I'm still not going to hate you okay?  :) Having said that, what else have you got in your character that can generate unmitigated vile abuse and resentment?  I need to cover all bases you see, in case I missed something.

The limits of comms without body language and inflection.  :-\

I fucking hate the conflation of homosexuality and pedophilia by people looking for a reason to hate gay people. For the record, being homosexual is not all about sex, it's also about whom a person is attracted to and ultimately can establish an intimate loving relationship with. Gee, the same as everyone else on this planet, no? Pedophilia is a sexual attraction for children under the age of 11. In a Venn diagram, for the visual learners out there, they wouldn't intersect because they would be two distinct circles. Will this slander ever stop? Is every German alive a Nazi because during the war some were? That's the same flawed logic used here, the same flawed logic used to build Japanese internment camp and the same hate-fueled propaganda which causes gay men especially to be targeted for murder all over the planet. Enough.

The above has been pointed out that it looks detrimental to Ben; can I just say publicly it wasn't my intention whatsoever. It was sarcasm, (Not at Ben) but unfortunately without the voice behind it, it could look what it wasn't. I've said in the thread earlier, but will reiterate it, that being homosexual has no relation to paedophila in a causal or aspirational sense, and I apologise for any inference my post might have given to the contrary. I certainly didn't wish to imply that Ben was a paedophile. Sorry Ben.

I think it should be clear to free people that one size does not fit all.  We're not all the same no matter how much a big Federal Gov would like it to be so.  Education should be locally controlled.  The Dept of Ed should be eliminated.  We have gone downhill ever since Carter created it.

No people are not the same, but they are not all that different either. I will concur there are difficulties, mostly due to changes in education take years to see progress. I will disagree that localities know best, because often they do not.
