The "Swedish Handel".

Large-scale occasional music -- music written for a specific occasion, like Handel's Water & Fireworks Music -- is perhaps the most delightful form of baroque instrumental output, showy and likable without all that tiresome caterwauling and freed from some of the constraints of courtly dance that encumber the ballets.  Roman's Drottningholmsmusiken, written for a wedding in the palace of that name, is a rare treasure.  The whole thing is about the same length as the Water Music.  A "Golovin Music" written I think for the Russian ambassador also survives and has been recorded.

Maybe a bit more naive than Handel but with exuberant French roulades and flourishes that seem to come from Rameau, it is a reminder that 18th-century Sweden participated fully in European musical culture as a legacy of her earlier bid as a Great Power -- Vivaldi concertos survive in collections way up North.

There is a land of pure delight
Where saints immortal reign.
Infinite day excludes the night
And pleasures banish pain.
Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dressed in living green.
So to the Jews old Canaan stood
While Jordan rolled between.

[There everlasting spring abides
And never with'ring flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heav'nly land from ours.
But tim'rous mortals stop and shrink
To cross this narrow sea
And linger shiv'ring on the brink
For fear to launch away.]

Could we but once our doubts remove,
These gloomy doubts that rise,
And see the Canaan which we love
With unbeclouded eyes,
Could we but climb where Moses stood
And view the landscape o'er
Not Jordan's streams nor death's cold flood
Should fright us from the shore.

I am here to fuck shit up.

Here is for Jacky, a Hungarian march in rare minor-key faux-barbaric style, like the Imperial March from Star Wars.  I adore the "trio" -- there is no recapitulation so it is not, technically -- which is full of baleful swagger, slinky hips and scimitars.
