Most people forget that health insurance premiums were rising significantly leading up to the ACA, so hospitals, like many corporations, reduced or eliminated part-time employees and supplemented full-time staff with relief (per diem), and temporary employees ("travelers"), for whom they pay no benefits. I have worked 'part-time' relief without benefits by choice for many years, and thus had to pay for my own health insurance. But, this decision has allowed me to remain in a stressful, demanding job where the turnover rate for full-time employees is extemely high (imagine 13 hr shifts on your feet taking care of others, often with no breaks to look after yourself).

Ironically, the last time I had employer-provided health insurance, the company disappeared overnight, stiffing employees with outstanding bills. Until the ACA, I was winging it with either over-priced, inadequate plans, or no insurance at all--which I don't recommend.

Sounds like career error.

For better or for worse, going to a single payer plan now seems inevitable.   In foisting upon the American taxpayer an unworkable market based plan that was enacted through trickery and deceit, the Dems legitimized the idea of universal health care.  They knew that once medical care began to be seen as a right there would be no going back no matter how much of a dog the ACA turned out to be.


When the Dems gain control of the Houee again you can bet that they will push to enact some version of socialized medicine citing the ACA as a noble but failed effort.    I can't wait for them to tell us how they intend to pay for it and the size of the bureaucracy they will need to administer it.

I'm sure that this was considered a decade ago around some brandy and cigars.  "Even when we lose, we will win.  But fuck 'em, they're sheep, we'll still keep our uber bitchin' plans for ourselves."

Obviously you know nothing about COBRA, so below are some facts. COBRA has been around since the mid 80s and was meant to be temporary coverage when someone lost their job, so they wouldn't be left without health insurance. It has always been expensive, as the individual is expected to pay 100% (plus administrative costs) of their former employer's group plan.

In fact, the ACA was a welcome alternative to COBRA, which was previously the only choice for someone who'd lost their job and was unable to get individual coverage (remember the dark ages of pre-existing conditions?)

One would think paying cash would be the simplest, cheapest method of getting prescriptions.

Walmart does offer $4 prescriptions for a lot of generics, but not the one I needed.

Typing in a drug and your zipcode will show you a large range of prices for the same drug at different pharmacies. Walmart was $266 for cash, $66 with the coupon, but Kroger was $31. Once you find the cheapest pharmacy, they give you a coupon with a negotiated price.

But if you try a different medication, that first pharmacy may not be the cheapest for the new drug. It is frustrating at best.

They'd rather pay us double-time for missed breaks than see us sit down for a bite to eat and a toilet break. You better stay healthy and out of the hospital, Mr. P. The nursing shortage will get worse when us old workhorse boomer nurses retire. BTW, the numbers of RNs alone belie reality, as not all will work (or last long) at the bedside as staff nurses, moving on to other positions in nursing. I've seen so many come and go, creating a less safe work environment for staff and patients.
