That's because you're a stupid materialistic twat.

I was never into flower arranging I guess. In fact, the most gardening I do is mowing the lawn and raking up the leaves.  :-\

The lower middle class American citizen couldn't afford to 'Buy American Made' products. Labour costs are far too high. Union made merchandise is too expensive.  Wallmart wins .....
I think with initial capital investment things could be made in the USA. I think the problem that everyone will be dealing with is structural unemployment due to advances in robotics, AI, 3D Printing, etc. With the technology increasing much more rapidly than in the past and not just for "industrial" jobs but soon "service" industries, medicine, and even law and, as we seen in the news: the world's oldest service industry prostitution. Ha. And assuming at some point we get feasible "green" tech or cold fusion or something think of all the people in the energy industry up and down stream and associated jobs that now need something to do.

Western societies might be in a better position to deal with that change- assuming we have strong borders and don't import the masses- because, for the most part, we've already deindustrialized a lot and have low native birth rates. Countries that are relying more on mass human labor and high birthrates might be in for real trouble when those workers get replaced (then again some countries, like China, have a type of government and just cull a bunch.)

Currently on TV, the talking heads are lining up to tell us about the new tax bill and how it will encourage American firms to move back to the USA to have their products made here... Presumably that includes Trump and Ivanka having their stuff not being made in south east Asia and the far east? Somehow I doubt it.

The Headquarters of these companies may be relocated back to the United States (if they ever actually left and didn't essentially just change their mailing address) but it's unlikely the low wage assembly or basic manufacturing jobs would move back.

Ever notice how the loudest anti-globalist types are regular Walmart shoppers?

The most effective way to help the economy is to think local. I try and buy locally produced products whenever possible. Supporting local economies provides jobs and revenue right where we live. The biggest benefactor of long-distance Amazon style shopping are big corporations.

Also, I often repurpose/refinish used items. For example, most furniture made in China is cheaply made with pressed wood products. Meant to be disposable, much of it ends up in our landfills after a few years use. It's often cheaper to find high quality articles at garage sales, Craigslist and the like. I found a beautiful sleek Danish style real wood bed frame for my son at a garage sale..10 bucks! I spent about 30 minutes lightly sanding, then covering with Danish oil. The gorgeous 40+ year old piece looks brand new!

Unfortunately, Americans have never been very good at electronics, most typically come from Asia, such as cell phones. With the exception of electronics, however, I think many commonly used items can be made at reasonable costs right here in the U.S.A

That's too bad.

I'm sure 3-D printing will eventually replace most other forms of manufacturing.  However, these things always seem to take longer than the predictions.  I remember some local right wing economist gas bag (Michael Campbell) predicted about 5 years ago that driverless cars (autonomous vehicles) would be all over the road "in five years time."

There always seem to be issues that delay transitions, be they regulatory, scalability, adaptation or simply inertia.

Though sometimes it is sad to see but you can often pick up good stuff at Estate Sales. Especially these days where so many old people don't live near their kids and it is often a "just sell all this crap, so I can sell the house" "or sell this stuff, so I can put mom in a home, and sell the house" situation. Sometimes it is sad because you see wedding albums or old family albums because the companies put a price tag on everything. Lose jar of assorted washers. Price it.

Also these days lots of law offices and schools are getting rid of furniture as books are going away and people update to a more modern look (or become less heirarchical in way offices are set up.) I saw some awesome old wood law bookshelves floor to ceiling with the glass fronted shelves going for a couple hundred bucks. I just didn't have the room. Also the County, University, and airport have sales of obsolete items, equipment, furniture, confiscated stuff (like bags of knives,) etc. Sometimes at auction, other times just for sale, or by appointment. Retirement Places often have garage sales weekly or monthly as new people move in and had to downsize (or, I guess, when people have died.)

Lastly a lot of charities run big "garage sale" events to raise funds for the Battered Women Shelter or Church Charity or Social Cause or whatever. You can find good stuff there often. Here Settlement House on the last day you buy a medium $5 or large $10box and throw as much stuff in it as you want (of course by then most stuff has been picked over.)

Actually, no.  I mostly see a bunch of illegal aliens and ghetto rats there.

Do you have some fake statistics to support your claim?

A lesson in Libtardarian logic:

Walmart is cheap, it’s crap is from “China” - it’s bad.
Amazon is cheap, it’s crappier crap is from “China” - it’s good.

Interesting hypothesis. She fires one of her subordinates and that makes you stronger? The commune of the recently unemployed and unemployable?

Oh they find new jobs. And they never say a word to people like her. But they never forget, and they vote! :)

True story: I picked up a 3,500 dollar oil painting for 8 dollars at an estate sale this summer.  Lets hear it for enjoying a classical decor while idiots sell off Grandma & Grandpa's nice stuff for pennies! :)  Not even the estate sale company bothered to google the artists name. It was a small piece, but quite valuable considering.

Hmm...So what your saying is anything outside your biased subjective opinion is "fake".

Corporations like Walmart ensure that low-wage workers remain in a perpetual welfare state, while the 1%ers reap rewards. Oh the irony of providing low wage retail jobs for people who qualify for welfare and other federal subsidies, so they can sell cheaply produced goods from overseas. In fact, it's such a brilliant scheme, I think these corporations deserve a tax break!

And the demokkkrats solution is as with everything, whine and complain and offer none. And their lemmings follow right along. Good little lemming you are.

And the US isn't experiencing stagflation because those numbers don't take into account main-street data! And the unemployment rate is low, because they don't take into account the quarter of the US population of working age that has been forced out of the labor market. And Hillary is going to win; 98% Chance! And everyone agrees with your P.C. Socialist bullshit at work, because if they don't they lose their jobs! Dumbass! This is why your kind continues to LOSE!

Yorkshire pud

Anyway....Anyone had a delve into the proposed tax reform shit? Hopefully you won't be ill, because you can't set your costs against tax...And if your home is over $500000 you can't get against tax on that either.

However!! Good news if you're such as a hedge fund manager (AKA the swamp) or Wells Fargo, because you'll be really popping the bubbly...Methinks Trump and his family will be happy too! And all submitted on a single sheet of paper!

Who is buying 500,000 houses when the national average wage is 55,000 a year for a college graduate? If your house is supposed to be 1/4 of your monthly net take-home, then the overwhelming majority of America can't afford one.

Oh yeah, the student loan can't go against tax either. Which means they're less likely to afford a home to live in. Anyway, it doesn't matter, because the jobs won't be there anyway.  :-\

The student loans are going to be discharged. There is no way around it. Academia is going to get gutted. They are just waiting on more Boomers to die over the next 5 years to do it because they are the bond holders. You and Laura are going to have to learn a trade and come work with the Rednecks. They're going to LOOOOOOVE you guys long time! :)

Swishypants

Teach your kids a trade, even if they still go on to college. The guys I knew that went into the trades are all multi-millionaires now. Plumbing, Heating/AC, Electrician, Exterminator, Handyman, Construction, Welding, Mechanic, Cable Splicing/laying. 5 years as a worker. 5 years as a foreman. 5 years building your own business. 15-20 years and a multi-millionaire! 33-38 years old and far more wealthy than most college grads will ever be! Even a lawn mowing business or pooper-scooper business is better than a college degree! Plus, you end up physically strong and able, with a pragmatic sense of the world, and women flock! :)

Gd5150

It appears the new tax bill is a turd. Removes most deductions, which by far amount to more than will be made up for by doubling the standard deduction. Cuts corporate taxes. That’s great, would encourage businesses to stay and return to US. Which would help create jobs etc...

The left should love this tax bill, it increases taxes. But they’re too stupid to figure out how it will play out. You erase all the deductions, in turn you make up for it with corporate tax cut. Then when the next Demokkkrat is in the White House, 1st thing they do is raise the corporate rate back to where is was before. Because who’s gonna argue against “those evil greedy corporations paying their fair share”. And wa la. You have gotten rid of deductions thus increasing taxes on the working class, and corporations are back to getting the shaft.

This steaming pile will never pass. The idiot lemmings will march in whichever direction they’re told. They’ll criticize what could result in a massive tax increase, which they’d normally love, but since Trump is president they’ll fight it. It’s funny and sad to watch the simple minded march as they’re told.

At this point the only thing that’s worth entertaining is the corporate tax cut, the rest is shell game. The establishment from both parties no longer discusses cutting government spending so the whole thing is a waste of time.
