There might be a fourth possibility: he was exhausted, his brain locked up and he didn't have a prepared answer. So, he was unable to think on his feet, and even the most basic and decent instinct, to reject the KKK, somehow was beyond his capacity to articulate. Maybe because he doesn't instinctively have too many strong feelings on the subject, like most people.

It won't be a good or plausible explanation at this point, no question. But if he can't divert attention and his supporters are forced to confront this problem, you have to wonder how they'll react. Will they make excuses for him to the extent that his numbers don't take a big hit (especially before Tuesday) or will this reverse his momentum? With any normal candidate, this wouldn't even be a question. He/she would be done and done.
