The thing that surprises me is that more people aren't worried about Hillary's&&, and Trumps*, plan to eliminate the "step up in basis" in the tax plan. It was mentioned in some speeches and in some articles but I  cannot find any details on it on her website (and/or if she wants to change current estate tax exemption?.)  Everyone assumes this is only used by "the mega rich" but really it applies to normal, middle-class people everyday like when you inherit a house, farm, ranch, stocks or bonds, etc. For an example, the often used Hollywood story of finding some old stock in Coke or Exxon that your grandma bought for pennies and now it is worth $XXX, without "step up in basis" you would have to pay capital gains on the whole appreciation. Under current policy you only need to pay (when you sell it) the capital gains tax on the increase from the day it became yours and the day you sell it. BIG difference. Same goes with land or whatever assets. The problem is rich people, like Hillary and Trump, will find a way around this by clever use of trusts, foundations, putting assets in their kids' name, or just not care. But to a small farmer or average joe he might not be able to keep the house or property just to cover the taxes owed due to the change.

And it will contain careful protections and flexibility for small and closely-held businesses, farms and homes, and personal property and family heirlooms." No details, of course, on what the middle-class means or how the exemptions work (that is, up to a certain $ or some sliding scale based on someone's current net-worth?)

Gary Johnson, or more properly the Libertarian Party (and arguably the Green Party) missed a once-in-a-century opportunity to really shake up the system and get a 3rd party elected or at least large margins. But he came across like he was stoned and goofy and unprepared all the time and didn't seem to have any political handlers to advise him. Much of the public hated both of the eventual choices in the two Parties (one due to a brutal nomination process and one due to fixing the nomination) and a less bombastic, moderate, rational, less corrupt candidate in another party could've maybe taken it. And could've used the marijuana issue to help get out the youth (and middle-age in some areas) vote even (show economic benefits etc) instead it looked like "so THAT's why we shouldn't legalize weed" when Johnson had opportunities to be interviewed or debate.
