Startpage.com will give you some protection but it still uses google search results.

Well startpage protects you from the data collection part. You could try https://duckduckgo.com

Use a meta-search engine like Duckduckgo or Startpage / Ixquick. They will pull some of their results from google, but google will log their IP instead of yours.

Ixquick / Startpage operates out of Denmark I think, so they don't fall under the draconian US data surrender policies. 
Plus you can proxy into a site for each search result.

The couple times I tried it it seemed to yield very limited results to the point where I just started using google again. Any others?

There was a time for a while when the results sucked. They were doing running upgrades and they came under very heavy attack for about 4 months straight. They are fairly quick now. When was the last time you tried them ?
I also have a list of alternative, specialty browsers somewhere that I'll try to dig up.
