I would never in a million years have guessed this.  Given long enough, I might have guessed the rusty soup can thingy, but not this.  I've never been to Boston, but the only watering hole whose patrons I've heard some pretty shady things about is on Dalton Street.  Wouldn't be that one, would it?

There's a few neighborhood pubs/bars deep in South Boston that still are "buckets of blood" from the Whitey Bulger era, mostly in and around the various housing projects(West Broadway/Old Colony Ave). This place that irks me isn't shady, it's more of a nuisance...that's owned by firefighters. They have connections. For instance, there's little parking space here. So the clientele of their bar double park in front of our homes-for hours on end. Normally, traffic cops would ticket and tow. BUT, since this bar is protected...the double parking goes on all day.

Now, wait. This is Boston. New York is the "Big Apple", and Chicago is the "City of the Big Shoulders", right? Boston is "The Bar With Some Bedrooms Attached."

i have to say, the yorkshire pud grew on me over time.

Some sections more than others. The following stat applies.

South Boston(45,000 people squeezed into about 2 miles) has nearly 50 bars/liquor stores. We have ONE library and zero book stores.

Is that past tense? What happened?

900 people per bar? I think I see what South Boston needs.

Hey anybody ever use soundforge protools or reaper?  I've been using reaper lately and have found myself sucked into the sound engineer thing.  The guitars are all me and we have computer drums but... they kick ass... no human being could play like that.  Since nothing was written before I started to record and mess around I've found myself having trouble actually playing all the way through my own shit without my hand cramping up... gettin mah chops back.  Anyways, I'll have a sound file up here for you guys to peruse and abuse eventually.  Need bass and vocals now.

edit:
oh and i think art bell may actually do something! times are good

nothing happened.  just a random thought.

Random thought. This thread is hard as hell to follow.

I'm randomly thinking that as crazy as things have been around here, it's been relief to switch off from abortiongunsracecorruptionpolitics for awhile. Doesn't look like there;ve been any world-shattering events

Oh. The Spanish train derailment: wasn't that a high speed rail line? Designed for >200 mph travel? If so, is it possible this mob frenzy and rush to judgment about the driver is precipitated by the RR owner/utility administrator/whoever-has-responsibility-for-the-condition-of-the-line trying to cover his/her own ass and quickly establish an unchangeable "De Facto Official Narrative" before the investigation begins into the condition of the line itself and any management shortcomings? I smell a rata.

In the past week or so, there have been a couple of big prison breaks in Iraq in which several hundred terrorists have escaped.  Is it possible the US chipped these guys and let them escape, only to use them to track where Obama should make drone strikes?

I think you can can count on it. What I can't figure out is, with all the NSA capability and activity, why aren't we recording every word spoken by every non-American who has ever considered picking up an AK and killing the hell out of them? Hell, we didn't even have any idea who the Tsarnaevs were, much less had listened to the Russians who said that the boys were in town and about to blow shit up. It was considered much more important by our Executive Branch to siphon and analyze the content of 100 million domestic phone calls.

Am I the only one who's getting the feeling that the continued use of the war-on-terror meme to justify NSA and satellite interception of all manner of legitimate communications is just cover and pretext for spying on US citizens for political advantage?

Nope.  I've thought that ever since The Patriot Act and the "War on Terror."  I'd swear they're using "1984" as the playbook, with never ending wars against indeterminate boogeymen,  mind numbing popular culture distractions, doublespeak, etc.  I fully expect to be drug off to room 101 in Homeland Sec....errr, I mean "The Ministry of Love" any day now.

Yep. Orwell intended 1984 as a cautionary tale, not a script...

I've found myself wondering at least twice today whether MV was joking or not about replacing food with that Garden of Eden Beyond Organic whateveritis.  It's quite a paradox: an idea both great and horrible.

I think I've learned two things about MV in the last few days: 1) he's a health-food guy (could he be vegan‽);
2) he's been a long-haul trucker (or rider at least).

Maybe tomorrow he'll post a picture holding Osama Bin Laden's beard.

What was the name of the great enemy in 1984? It's been too long since I've read that

        Ronald Reagan.

At least that's what our Walter Mondale supporting teacher said.

I don't recall an enemy country being named, since most of the book is about internal control and the crushing of dissent. But "Emmanuel Goldstein" is a counter-revoultionary hated by Big Brother and the Ingsoc (English Socialist Party) which holds power in the "Airstrip One" province (Britain) of Oceania. Goldstein leads The Brotherhood against the oppressive government, and is the author of the book which subverts protagonist Winston Smith into fantasizing about bringing down Big Brother. Or at least that's what I recall the Cliff's Notes saying in about 1970.

b_dubb

Yes Goldstein. Focus of the two minute hate. Or in our case Al Qeda focus if Fox News

Here's a nice Wiki summary of some of the structure of "1984."

Oceania is the location of the novel's version of London, where Winston Smith, the main character, lives. It is apparently composed of the Americas, Great Britain (called "Airstrip One" in the novel), Ireland, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and southern Africa below the River Congo. It also controlsâ€"to different degrees and at various times during the course of its eternal war with either Eurasia or Eastasiaâ€"the polar regions, India, Indonesia and the islands of the Pacific. It is described in The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism by Emmanuel Goldstein, Oceania's declared Public Enemy Number One, as resulting from the merging of the British Empire and the United States. Goldstein's book also states that Oceania's primary natural defence is the sea surrounding it. This may be the reason why the Party highlights the Floating Fortresses.
It occasionally conquers the rest of Africa, but is later driven back by Eurasia. Oceania lacks a single capital city, although what could be seen as regional capitals, such as London and apparently New York City, are in place.
The ruling doctrine of Oceania is Ingsoc, the Newspeak term for English Socialism, which is ultimately devoted to the naked exercise of power. Its nominal leader is Big Brother, who is believed by the masses to have been the leader of the revolution and is still used as a figurehead by the party, but may now be dead, or may have never existed. The personality cult is maintained through Big Brother's function as a focal point for love, fear, and reverence, emotions which are more easily felt towards an individual than towards an organisation.
The unofficial language of Oceania is English (officially Oldspeak) and the official language is Newspeak. The restructuring of the language is intended to ultimately eliminate even the possibility of unorthodox political and social thought, by eliminating the words needed to express it.
The society of Oceania is sharply stratified into three groups, the small power-seeking and government controlling Inner Party, the more numerous and highly indoctrinated Outer Party, and the large body of politically meaningless and mindless Proles. Except for certain rare exceptions like Hate Week, the proles remain essentially outside Oceania's political control, being kept placated by distractions such as trivial sports and entertainment, and the Thought Police easily manage any Prole socially aware enough to be a problem.

You can see the concepts of political correctness, personality cults, the corruption of power, and the control of the masses with  popular culture portrayed in Orwell's premise.

I think today is more like Brave New World than 1984.

it's called raw meal and the company is garden of life.  i've replaced two thirds of my regular food with it.  couldn't be happier with the results thus far (aside from the seizures).

no, i'm not a vegan.  the 1/3 of my food that's regular food is comprised of whatever i feel like eating.  had some ribs yesterday, as a matter of fact.

and no riding for me, sir.  i was the captain of that big rig.
