So, I see Michael Douglas is claiming oral sex is what gave him throat cancer. He must have eaten a lot of bad pussy or one big, bad dick.

Juan

What tickles me is the reaction to Douglas' statement.  There seems to be at least some scientific evidence that oral sex can transmit HPV.  However, the comments I've seen don't discuss whether the evidence is there - they criticize Douglas for making a statement that might reduce oral sex. Will oral sex get its own political agenda as AIDS did?

The Chicago Bears are giving JaMarcus Russell a tryout.   I have a soft spot in my heart for JaWalrus - he single-handedly ensured the Oakland Raiders would suck through Al Davis' last years, he was instrumental in ending the NFL coaching career of that little shit Lane Kiffin, personally drained the Raiders bank account, damaged Raider ticket sales - perhaps permanently, and the Raiders have not to this day recovered from the whole Russell era.

Let's hope he does well enough to get more tryouts even if this one doesn't work out.
I too have a small soft spot for JaMarc, if only because seeing him lets me imagine what it would be like if Shaq played football. Sort of. Except it doesn't, since Shaq is both significantly taller and a better athlete. It's also interesting to contemplate how it could be that an individual whose IQ tests somewhere around "educable mentally retarded" could also have been a student in good standing at Louisiana State University where he played football. Of course, LSU was the pride and joy of Huey "Kingfish" Long, he who so institutionalized corruption in that state that Louisiana and Baton Rouge still give Illinois and Chicago a good run for their money as being the most corrupt governments in America. (Long also is the inspiration for Willie Stark in the magisterial All The King's Men by Robert Penn Warren.) But the complexity of pro football seems to have overwhelmed Russell's physical gifts. As the NFL becomes more and more like the federal government in both complexity and imperious attitude (as well as in self-image as a stand-in for or even representative of government), I want to see the NFL administration defeated, thwarted and embarrassed. So, Go, Jamarcus.

Of course while Douglas has admitted (more like claimed, when he got caught fooling around*) that he's a "sex addict", and had sex with a "lot of women**, it's reasonable to assume he had far more sex with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, than anyone else. So his statement about the source of his throat cancer sounds very bad as far as sex with Mrs. Douglas goes. Because Mike is as much as saying that Ms. Z-J's va-jay-jay causes cancer. She has Poison Pussy. The Pudenda of Death. I don't know how much he coordinated with her about his statement to the press, but it would seem this could hurt her marketability. "Hey, Sir Sean, how about a sequel to Entrapment with Catherine Zeta-Jones? How does £20-Million sound?"

"Bloody hell, man! No! I'd rather be forced to do another prison break and roger Francis Coppola's retarded nephew, that Cage boy, than get within a mile of that Welsh woman's rotting womb!

*      It irks me no end that these days when some male celebrity gets caught fooling around with females not his SO, that he claims "sex addiction" and goes away for "treatment". Hell, sleeping with a bunch of women was from time immemorial considered one of the natural "entitlements" of celebrity and wealth, something these guys were proud to do because not everyone got to do it. Jeez, these guys were just trying to get away with everything they could, sex wise, and that's just natural male instinct.

Understand, I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying that having as much sex with as many women as possible is a very natural male impulse, not some kind of fucking "illness" which must be beaten down and repressed to the point of non-existence. If that happened what would happen to all that pent-up aggression necessary for sports and wars? We'd be fit for nothing but English boys' schools, caning, and a lifetime of confused sexuality.

Most of us control these natural impulses to impregnate the entire herd on our own: maturity is part of it, and monogamy is our society's way of creating stable and lasting couples and families. But controlling that impulse ourselves has been considered the way to do it; not some near-criminalization of the instinct which tells us to chase pussy; and treating that instinct as a disease. Actually we regular guys know a dodge when we see it, and "sex addiction therapy" looks more like "hiding out with a bunch of nymphos and scoring some phone numbers for hook-ups later".

** Wait, we were told by no less an authority on sex than a President of the United States that oral sex was not "sex" - so how can that count for "sex addiction" purposes, huh?

Juan

This is the feminized society that the women's libbers wanted.  As I tell my two female friends who came along during that era, "I hope you're enjoying it." Sex addiction is obviously something made up by a woman or a caught man.

As Tom Wolfe wrote in "I Am Charlotte Simmons" - when the basketball star, after an evening of sex, asked the groupie why she did it, she replied - "You're a star. Any girl wants to fuck a star. Every girl."

JaMarcus is dumb, but he isn't that dumb.  Is he?  Half the people out there have under 100 IQs, nearly all the FB players seem to.  I think he was just very lazy, with the Big Star mentality coming out of college where things just came easily to him at that level.  So more like a Ralph Sampson than a Shaq.

But he seemed like a good guy otherwise, at least from a distance, and he was just a kid after all.  And I do hate the Raiders and enjoyed his time there.

The fun has been drained from all pro sports, major college FB and BB too.  They even managed to wreck cycling, although I'm still watching that when it's on. no matter what.

To fix things, I would suggest they limit ticket prices, salaries, number of coaches allowed, and interviews.  Especially interviews - the closer we get to most of these athletes. the worse off we all are.  What was wrong with the sports writers going to the games and reporting on that, maybe one player would have a post game show and that was about all we'd ever hear from them.

I think it would be very healthy for our society if one or more of these leagues failed.  I vote for the NBA or MLB.  (Hollywood could use a collapse as well, but that's for another post).

None of this will happen though, there seems to be no limit from what we fans will take.

Technically, all the Big Three sports have salary caps, but the whole idea is a joke. One thing I think might help is only paying the players on the team that wins the game.

Don't know how old you are, Steve, but I can recall the days when a team achieved greatness because of good draftiing, solid trades, good management and coaching, dedicated players, etc.  Now, a lot of teams achieve success through big-bucks spending.  I could be wrong, but it strikes me that in football, the 49ers were among the first to outspend their opponents.  Players were lining up to go play for the team:  Ken Norton, Jr. Charles Haley, Pissant Deion Sanders, etc.  (YES, the 49ers DID have a great coach and a great system, but still, I think money was a big factor....  Of course, I was also a very disgruntled Rams fan  :P).

In baseball, we see the Yankees, Sox, Angels, etc. outbidding everybody else.  We see players juicing.  It's largely a ruined sport (at least for me).

And basketball?  Well, as a Lakers fan I have seen the team enjoy fabulous success, but (like the 49ers), they sure played "the system" to their benefit where others team just couldn't compete.

One thing that gets overlooked with the 49ers during those years was they had 6 games a year that were absolute gimme's - 2 each against the Rams, Saints, and Falcons.  If they went 5-1 against them and just 5-5 in their other games that was 10 wins.   They had a lot of home field playoff games.

... In baseball,...

And basketball?...

Oh, how I used to love baseball.  It's been utterly ruined.  Baseball is 1-0, 2-1, 4-2, 2 hours and 15 minutes, every run, every base, every pitch matters, the idea is for the pitcher to get the batter to hit a bad pitch on the ground or in the air early in the count.  When it's 13-5 in the bottom of the 4th and you've already been watching 5 hours... ugh... I don't know what that is but it isn't baseball.  Now no single run, hit, or batter matters and it's the most boring thing in the world.  I don't think I've made it all the way through a single game since the year they cancelled the World Series.

And the NBA?  Absolutely Unwatchable.  That's a whole other post.

The NFL?  Boring.  How many times in one lifetime am I supposed to watch the Jets play the Dolphins, Cowboys-Washington, Oakland-Chargers.  OMFG

I do watch a little - very little - college and NFL.  I like the night games on TV.  I'll watch any cycling but there isn't much of that, I think I watched 1 period of Sharks hockey this year, and about 2 quarters of the Warriors in the Playoffs...

So, the Nightstalker (Richard Ramirez, not Carl Kolchak) has died of natural causes in prison at the age of 53.  Anyone hear anything further on that?  What sort of natural causes were they?  I had heard that actor Sean Penn said the scariest thing in his life was being in a cell opposite Ramirez.  Supposedly, Ramirez would just stare through the little door window at Penn, creeping him out majorly.

I just heard about this. There was speculation about him being HIV+ in the 80's, but never verified. He was one of the last "charismatic" serial killers, being in LA certainly adding to the drama. Evil motherfucker he was.

My understanding is that the dude received loads of marriage proposals by some very f-ed up women.  I guess that like the Boston Marathon Bomber, he's got dreamy eyes.  Is this a female-only dynamic? Did Lorena Bobbit receive lots of admiring mail after dismembering John Bobbit?

Hey, the man was famous. Come on, he was in the movie "Joe Dirt", sort of.
On second thought, this spot in the movie I'm referring to was when Joe was camping out in the insecticide tent and got bombed. Nevermind.

apparently the Pat's signed Tebow.

This is the absolute best situation for him and potentially a great move on their part.  If it turns out he can't play there, then that should be it.

Well, there is the potential problem of Belichick having been reported as having said he hates Tebow. That's a nice situation to be going into. I'm not sure how the Pats see Tebow's role. Maybe a special situations guy? I think he could be deadly in the right circumstances, and could even expand his expertise if someone would believe in him. And it doesn't sound like that's Belichick. But so far it sounds like most NFL folks are too set on proving they were right when they said that Tebow isn't NFL material, even if it hurts their own team to do so. The most interesting thing about Tebow with the Pats might be the dilemma that poses for Bellichick: sure, The Greatest Ego In The AFC East, would love to win; but he'd also like to be proven correct that Tebow is not a NFL caliber player. I've got it: Beleichick will spin it so that Tebow isn't NFL quality...and that only Belichick can "coach him up". It's a win-win!

Actually I'd like to see Tebow try tight end, especially as a true offensive weapon and not just an extra lineman. Tebow getting the ball in the open field, with a running start? That's just shy of murder.

But I am just flabbergasted at the sheer hatred aimed at Tebow within the NFL. He was sabotaged in broad daylight by the Jets, or, rather, by Rex Ryan. I agree he's a long way from a complete NFL quarterback, but that's if people insist on jamming a square peg into around hole. He's not going to throw strikes on a rope on 3rd-and-29. But he's going to kill defenses on roll outs, moving pockets and 15-yard down-and-outs. And if he has even mediocre blocking he'll score from inside the 20 every time. But if this doesn't work - and with the problems presented by Brady's excellence and Belichick's animosity, I don't see how it will - I'd like to see him in the CFL, which is tailor made for his gifts.

Belichick has said he admires Tebow's character, versatility, and intelligence.  Some unnamed source said that about Belichick, and Belichick denied it.  Brady won't be worried about his job with Tebow the way the starters would be on a lot of other teams.

I doubt NE would have a signing like this, or any signing really, without consulting the coach.  The 2 things Tebow needs are time to develop into a passer - if he's going to, and siting behind Brady gives him that time, and to not have the whole Tebow personality cult thing be a distraction - and the Patriots as a team under Belichick have shown they can handle distraction.

The CFL is 3 downs and a bigger field.  It's even more of a passing league.

We'll see, I hope they find a way to get him into games and am glad that we haven't see the last of him.

Eddie Coyle

Viewing this Tebow move through a glass darkly.

          (1) The Pats have been taking heat lately, maybe their worst offseason PR since the Pete Carroll days. The Welker debacle(and today, he stated that Brady fumed to him in private) the Gronkowski nonsense, his own foolish off field exploits along with a series of injuries that seem to be projecting him to end up having a Bavaro-esque career.

          (2) The Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals is a fresh reminder that the alleged "dynasty", is actually the local pro team with the longest title drought. The Sox in '07, Celts in '08 and B's in '11 have hoisted banners, while the Pats last championship was Feb 6, 2005.

       (3) Tebow was drafted by...Belichick's likely replacement, Josh McDaniels. And the McDaniels-ization of the offense continues with Amendola coming from the Rams to replace Welker. There is growing speculation that Belichick, if 2013 is a "struggle"(meaning just winning the AFC East-no problem- but no SB appearance) he may walk away at year's end. Brady is 36 now. That window is closing...and while still a dominant regular season performer, his post-season numbers since 2006 are very, very pedestrian.

Yep, I can't see the BFD. To me it's just one more embarrassingly lame juvenile fantasy series, like Twilight, True Blood or Harry Potter (juvenile as to the intellectual and emotional maturity, not content). Cardboard characters ("No way! They've got this cool, smart dwarf!"), ridiculous plots in a literally fantastic society which could never have supported the massive populations they have or survived long enough to have achieved the many "advancements" they did - it just bores the hell out of me.

Did you guys see the Red Wedding? If you don't care for fantasy then GoT isn't for you. Personally it reminds me of HBO's Rome which was spectacular but with elements of magic and such.

The "Grayest Rock and Roll Band in the World" is in Boston this week and it's been amusing watching my Mike Damone/Ralph Kramden brother in law attempt to scalp tickets. The Bruins being in the Stanley Cup ain't helped matters, as the Guidos from the north shore who normally would go to a Stones show either don't care or can't afford it. "I just seen them on the Voodoo Lounge tour..."  and the time removed from that tour to today is exactly the same as Voodoo Lounge was from the Tour of the Americas' 75.

And McCartney's show at Fenway in July, those tickets are moving like frozen molasses.

My Stones apostolicism is generally confined to 1964-74, and I see the local record stores used bins completely overloaded with Dirty Work, Undercover, Flashpoint, A Bigger Bang on sale from 3 bucks and below. Which, BTW, doesn't exist for the Beatles, Floyd, Zep. And for as legendary as the Stones rep is, their catalog sales according to Billboard are quite underwhelming.
