When I was about six or seven, I spent ninety minutes arguing with my father, over the solution to the equation, 9 + 9 = X.

Perhaps I was younger than that. I could well have been, as I distinctly remember, not just arguing my point stubbornly, but being firmly convinced that the X in question equalled... nineteen.

I know, I know what you're thinking--what an idiot, at any age. But wait, this story gets better. After an hour and a half of this, I suddenly realized... oh! I am wrong! Nine plus nine is actually eighteen!!

And then the next thing I did, was try to convince my father that I had been saying it was eighteen all along, and he was the one who had been wrongly taking the position that nine plus nine made nineteen because... well, because it rhymed, I guess.

Anyway, I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I'll never forget the look that came over my father's face, when he recognized the massive bullshit his son was trying to pull over on him. As we can imagine, that particular "It was you!!" gambit didn't last long.

I'm in my forties now. I've made and seen a lot of bullshit in my time. When it comes to bullshit, my beam of insight is penetrating.
