This is a really good summation of current scholarship on the issue, from a surprisingly humble source.

An impressive new ship-bomb they are trying to sell, sad end for a ship I knew, it used to haul frozen cod and pollock back from the Aleutians

I love the snark and inter-agency plotting there for funding and support: "lumbering submarine."  ;D

It might be cheaper though to just hire some alkie captain to pilot the vessel.

Just got a book, haven't read it yet, about that ghost ship and crazy stuff. Martime  law and finance is amazing. Bzyantine and not 'sexy' so most don't pay attention, even though most everything we buy and need moves, at some point, by ship. Sometimes people can't even figure out who owns the ship and there are so many levels of ownership, leasing, leasing back, insuring, reinsuring, and types of legal relationships related to the goods, and sailors.

Yes, very much a continuation of the air-power-vs-navy debate from WWII.  Air force will argue for air power and denigrate everything else, Navy for ships (including undersea) and denigrate everything else.  Should surprise absolutely no one.

Much like big vaccine companies and organizations will do the same for their babies, which seemed to astonish some folks for some reason.

Yeah, the Joint Chiefs and various Congressional committees were supposed to settle but the rivalry is still there. I think the Space Force deal was an interesting blow to both. Just because both were trying to get into that market and resented NASA. "It is like flying!" "No it is like shipping!"

I'm trying to recall the book. Hard to find. But some callers talked about him on Art's programs many years ago. Some captain who was claiming 'floating time-bombs' due to lack of security, corruption, questionable finance, and river and port conditions. He was a Finn. Found it. But still hard to get and find actual book.

I have spent no small amount of time warning you all of the fuckin' tickin' fuckin' time bombs that I have seen coming. Having known a Finn or two, I'd pay stark heed to any such warning. Shit has gotten real, and will continue to. Face reality. Our world is at war.

That looks like a great gift for someone but only if I could read it to someone functionally illiterate and I could scan the text before being spoken aloud, lest someone get triggered, or set off, or learn some dangerous information that only -legitimate- sailors should know. A tall order but that looks like a tower of a book. I would probably 1-click buy if available but obviously not.

I don't need any more rare paperweights or doorstops anyway.

Ha. I will join in you in the last comment, maybe the former. But for sure I have too many books. I'm convicted, I guess, to think at some point, others might like. Maybe not just for a doorstops. Augean stables effort to get rid of them all. I'm very suspicious of the 'online' and 'electronic' books. Easily tracked, edited, deleted- they even had a whole thing many years ago when Amazon deleted 1984 from Kindles. The irony was only deemed ok, by me, because I thought they should've chosen Fahrenheit 451 for their signally. And then force Metric so we don't even know what Fahrenheit is.

It would look weird if I were storing all this digital media (like five terabytes of stuff I've collected over the years) and claiming I was archiving it for the purpose of restoring literature to civilization should there be an actual planet-killer event. So no I'm not a pirate.

Books are incredibly valuable, people just don't even know.

I really recommend the last half of "Battlefield: Earth" and I am not talking about the movie.

A real, paper book can be burned for heat or eaten as a last resort.

Or in those created shortages used in an outhouse. Though the Sears catalog is easier than books. And there are sections of interest while sitting on the pot. One also will note that there is a technique by which newspapers can be used as a weapon. I don't advocate this but hooligans used. One can make a hammer or stabber by them for use in the terraces jail (gaol) or etc. Wet, fold, kinda dry and use for purpose. Of course, this is not being advocated. But pulp can be 'repurposed in extremis,"

What a prude  :P  Is it not also degenerate?  Are we not allowed to smash on Christmas?  Back in the old old days you guys lamenting the fall of civilization all love to stare longingly at in the distance with misty eyes, when men were men and women were women and everyone went to church every day, advent was a fast like Lent:  no sex allowed.  There was plenty of smashing on Christmas, let me tell you!

This new puritanism where sex is dirty is ahistorical and unchristian, trying to drag us eastward into mohammedanism rife with spectacular surface prudery cloaking depraved Slippery subterranean vice.  Go read Martin Luther on sex if you don't believe me.

My comment really had nothing to do with sex. It was about dressing up in Satanic shoes on the birthday of our Lord and saviour.

Juan

It's Calvinist elitism.  The riff-raff are driven towards mohammedenism while the elect retain their sex, drug, and money laundering ways.
