C'mon we've all sliced a finger end cutting onions and left it in the pasta mix. Who hasn't done that? What is wrong with people?
Back in school they hired an assistant cook that was a big time druggie, but a funny guy, but was always getting hurt, from being boozed up or high and getting who knows of what kind of situations or accidents. One time we were eating and someone complemented him on the fish (which was broiled with some lemon, etc) and he said thanks, "cutting all those lemons really made all my cuts sting though." In all seriousness. Looked over and his arms and hands were all cut up, bruised, and scrapped. Haha.

IB. Yep. Lived and worked in Manhattan for many years. 1986 to just three months before 9/11. Then we bopped to L.A. Vegas was a good place for hating as well. Though there's no way I'd go back there. Can't stand the climate. Though, for work it was very good to me. Loved your meme of Sredni. Ha. Check your pms. :)

Aldous!!! It's so good to see you. Yes, make that thread. I will always be a Gypsy (Stevie twirl). Thankful, my husband has that spirit too. Though more grounded and grounding for the creative wifey.

I'm going to send you an email. I have popped in here to say hi to a few but just no time nor energy for the dramas and so forth. I think Switzerland is a must in my future.

It is, especially if you enjoy mountains, alpine lakes, or private banking. Norway is awesome also, I sorta compare it to Switzerland but more "wild"- like you want to really know where you are going if hiking, x-country skiing, mountain biking, etc in the more remote or non-famous places. And ferry schedules are very important. There is often not the nice trails and clearly marked trails (or even places to stop for a cold beer) like you find more in Switzerland. (For the famous stuff the trails are marked and fine, usually.)  Norway also has the deal where anyone can hike/camp/pick berries/mushrooms even on private land (away from any houses, not if cultivated fields, and shut any gates if there are livestock.)
Both places are extremely expensive, though. Especially Norway for drinks. BYOB duty-free on the way there; if you are inclined that way. And save your receipts for VAT refund on certain goods if you buy stuff.
Good luck and have fun! Great countries. Two of my absolute favorites.

Thanks for this info! God, yes to those mountains! Myy father's side of the family are Nordic. My grandparents moved to the U.S. from Norway and I've always wanted to go. However, it wasn't until I reached an age to appreciate the family connection. I've actually sold my art out there too, and so that's nice to have an art audience there. Many good friends there.

It just feels like it resonates deep in my bones. I certainly must visit. Albrecht, though I don't get into threads much, I do stop and read your informative posts. Always enjoy them.

A long time ago on one of your early trainwreck podcasts you told a story about a customer on the phone who insisted you call him Doctor and you declined saying something like if I'm in your office, I'll call you doctor. I thought that was great. I wonder though if he ever used your services again.
that was a looong time ago.  now that i think about it, i haven't seen that guy in years.  but fuck him.  one of the reasons i started my own business was so that i wouldn't have to abide unreasonable behavior.

It reminded me of a time when I was talking to a teacher at school and I referred to another teacher (whom I liked a lot) just by his last name, Warburton. The teacher I was talking to stopped me and said Doctor Warburton. I just thought it was lame, it was obvious whom I was referring to.

i would, from that point, insist that this teacher refer to me as mr. vandeven.  man.  my blood pressure is going up just reading this.

I've often thought about going back to school for a PhD but it seems like a hell of a lot of work just so I can ask people to call me Doctor and have them refuse.

I've spent the last few weeks at work on a projection routine for life insurance policies.  It mainly consists of a vector made up of other vectors.  I'm so sick of vectors, I'm looking for array without them.

Charlie Watts on the stabbing of George Harrison:

Quote
I spoke to Ringo about a month after it happened and he told me exactly what went on, and it was horrific. George was stabbed about 40 times. It happened outside his bedroom on the landing. He would have been dead if he'd been lying in bed, he wouldn't have been able to fight. The papers did say that one wound punctured his lung, but a lot of the others were just as horrific. The man was slashing him everywhere. George's wife hit him again and again on the head with this brass lamp, but he just wouldn't stop. There was blood everywhere.

Some people find great offense in being called only by their last name.  But this was commonplace when I was in the Army.

But if someone would refer to a gentleman as Mr. Soandso, or a lady as Mrs./Ms./Miss Soandso, yet would refuse to call the same person Dr. Soandso, after knowing that they do indeed hold a doctorate, is doing so just to be ignorant, as the pre-nomial Dr. is correct.
This scenario is different than a person who holds a doctorate asking to be referred as "doctor", without their last name following the pre-nomial.

I will listen for that episode of RadioTrainWreck, I am up to November 2009.

I was really just trying to save the teacher's time by being as succinct as possible. It apparently backfired on me.
Also the show I was talking about should be around that time, 2009 of the trainwreck shows. If I remember correctly, it was even before Evelyn joined Michael, I think.

My understanding was it's correct to refer to one as 'dr' in their professional situation/environment, but not appropriate elsewhere.  What kind of insecure blowhard would even want to be referred to as 'dr' elsewhere?

On the other hand, a person could save money and time as simply tell people they're a 'doctur'

I dunno, I think for a teacher-student situation that was probably the right thing to do, particularly when discussing another teacher. Formality has it's uses. What matters is being able to correct someone without being a dick about it. Yes, I've read a lot of Internet but I still believe this to be possible.

I know I'm a dying breed but what is so wrong with some formality or decorum, at least in some places? People with advanced degrees have earned them people and there is a separation between teacher and student, old and young, stranger and friend. I can't stand it when politicians, or salesman, instantly are "Hi Bob, I'm running for" or "Bob, I got this great investment, let me tell you about...." I say:" Wait, you don't know me, I don't know you. It is "Mr.Smith. Don't try to ingratiate yourself to me by presuming that is my nickname, maybe I go by Robert or Bobby, or that we are friends." Or teachers that show up dressed worse than the students they are teaching (ok, maybe in philosophy departments or eccentric professors but otherwise dress appropriately to your position.)
