Thank you, sir. I think our regular schedule that we've been sticking to has helped make the show better.

I just thought you guys should know that I've been listening to your show in my car as I drive down the highway late at night, and if people are in, say, half a mile in any direction of me trying to listen coast to coast that night - they're getting an earful of The Spec Sheet instead.

the following is from a talk about IOS long term vulnerabilities
pdf

Identifying Back Doors, Attack
Points, and Surveillance
Mechanisms in iOS Devices

What This Talk Is
Overview of a number of undocumented high-value
forensic services running on every iOS device
¡  How they’ve evolved
¡  What kind of data they provide
Examples of forensic artifacts acquired that should
never come off the device without user consent
Surveillance mechanisms to bypass personal security
(intended for enterprises), but make potential targets
Suspicious design omissions in iOS that make
collection easier

What This Talk Is NOT
A talk about fun 0days and how we can have a little
temporary fun with them for a few days.
¡  The content discussed here has been around for many years,
and are low level operating system components
¡  Apple is well aware of these components, and has clearly been
updating them and supporting them for reasons unknown
¡ I have emailed both Tim Cook and Steve Jobs at various times
to ask for an explanation about these services, citing them as
“back doors”, and have received no reply
¡ I *have* received replies from Tim Cook about Apple’s
crummy warranty service, so I know he gets my email

Questions for Apple
Why is there a packet sniffer running on 600 million
personal iOS devices instead of moved to the developer
mount?
Why are there undocumented services that bypass user
backup encryption that dump mass amounts of personal
data from the phone?
Why is most of my user data still not encrypted with the
PIN or passphrase, enabling the invasion of my personal
privacy by YOU?
Why is there still no mechanism to review the devices my
iPhone is paired with, so I can delete ones that don’t
belong?

Living real life.. you know how it goes.   BTW love the toddler-speak bit.  If I ever get my show off the ground before my daughter grows out of her babble talk, I will include it as a regular segment, with credit to you of course.

Verizon caught throttling Netflix traffic even after it pays for more bandwidth

Netflix has recently begun paying both Comcast and Verizon to improve network performance and carry its video streams at higher bandwidths, but so far only Comcast has reciprocated with better service. Not only has Verizon’s performance become dramatically worse, the company has continued to try and foist the blame for the problem on Netflix...

The final major update for Windows 8.1 is said to arrive on patch Tuesday in August.

Mark your calenders, folks, and be sure to use pencil instead of ink (unless it's erasable ink) a Russian website is reporting that Microsoft will release Windows 8.1 Update 2 on August 12, which is also next month's Patch Tuesday date. This is expected to be the last major update for Windows 8.1 before Microsoft switches gears to Windows 9, or Threshold as it's also been referred to.

Better chance of success I am guessing.

If you can't get into download mode then you may need the usb jig. You can get one on ebay for a buck or make one quite easily.

Another entertaining and sexcellent episode!

A quick update on my linux quest. Tried ubuntu, lubuntu, and linux mint (xfce) liveUSB on my crappy old Celeron (2.4Ghz/ 512MB RAM/ Integrated Graphics) laptop. The last two ran the best (since Unity was choking my integrated graphics and low RAM). I understand that I can swap window managers and that USB's read speed might be factors here.

Sadly, I can't do a proper install because the old IDE hard drive on board is fried. It sounds like George Noory's teeth being scraped on a chalk board. And of course the drive from my old 2.5" enclosure is also shot.

I contemplated getting a new hard drive, but I compared Flash and page rendering speeds with my desktop XPS rig using the same liveUSB and I'm thinking that I should just get a new laptop with more horsepower than the old one. Besides, the screen is starting to go, it's past warranty, I gotta use a USB wifi stick, and the damn thing is an oven.

All that said, I'll probably end up going Ubuntu and installing xfce. Thanks to MV and wr250 for your insights!

I could only catch bits and pieces of the show live. Verizon kept timing out. We moved to a rural location with no phone service (POTS) and no cable. I have a 3G hotspot (grandfathered-unlimited) and a 4G ipad mini - both Verizon. Neither of them could keep up with the stream.

Sometimes it works just fine and we can actually watch Netflix, even on the 3G, but many days the service simply sucks.

Perhaps I should have called in and asked about alternative internet access options.

When is the next show?

Should call in and bullshit a bit about the support for 60fps by youtube all of the sudden.  I got some interesting info about it :) or if that topic has been covered already, maybe bs about the h.265 codec I've been working with for the last 5 months.
