It's 1.5 calls per year.

The .5 is Horatio.

Windows 'Threshold': More on Microsoft's plan to win over Windows 7 users

And not too surprisingly, one of the Microsoft Operating Systems Group's main goals in designing and developing the coming operating system (OS) release â€" which may or may not ultimately be branded as "Windows 9" â€" is to try to make it more palatable to hold-out Windows 7 users.

In order to do this, Microsoft is working on including in Threshold lots of new features specifically aimed at "desktop" users, meaning those who interact primarily with their Windows computing device from a desktop or laptop PC with mouse/keyboard and optional touch.

With Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft officials designed Windows around a set of profiles based on the hardware specifications of the devices in use. Certain devices running Windows 8.1 Update include Power and Search buttons on the Metro-style Start screen; others don't. Some of those running Windows 8.1 Update have their machines start up by default in the Desktop/Win32 legacy environment, while others on touch/mobile-first devices start up in the Metro-Style Start Menu by default.

Good point on the show about how DMRN may be "sanitizing" their network's content by telling people what they can and cannot say. How is that different from the terrestrial radio network BS?

Not a great environment to foster "THE NEXT" Art Bell, by telling people how they have to behave.

In other news, thanks for the Mumble rec. I fucking hate Skype. Skype is the Herpes of the Internet. It's extremely annoyingly painful and if you want to deal with a Skype person, you have to get it too. Fuck M$.

I will just say this, if you have watched dark matter radio over the last few months, you will have noticed the number of live shows decreasing.

I'm not sure we can legally blame Skype for the quality of content.

Taintco's legal department will check it out once they have completed their weekend diploma course at the local community college in Santo Domingo.

NSA: Linux Journal is an "extremist forum" and its readers get flagged for extra surveillance
A new story published on the German site Tagesschau and followed up by BoingBoing and DasErste.de has uncovered some shocking details about who the NSA targets for surveillance including visitors to Linux Journal itself.

While it has been revealed before that the NSA captures just about all Internet traffic for a short time, the Tagesschau story provides new details about how the NSA's XKEYSCORE program decides which traffic to keep indefinitely. XKEYSCORE uses specific selectors to flag traffic, and the article reveals that Web searches for Tor and Tails--software I've covered here in Linux Journal that helps to protect a user's anonymity and privacy on the Internet--are among the selectors that will flag you as "extremist" and targeted for further surveillance. If you just consider how many Linux Journal readers have read our Tor and Tails coverage in the magazine, that alone would flag quite a few innocent people as extremist.

Qualcomm DMCA Notice Takes Down 100+ Git Repositories
Qualcomm has forced GitHub to take down over 100 Git repositories over alleged copyright infringement.

Using the US Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), Qualcomm has forced GitHub to take down over 100 Git repositories on the basis of "Cyveillance has recently discovered the unauthorized publication, disclosure, and copying of highly sensitive, confidential, trade secret, and copyright-protected documents on the below web site. Specifically, we have confirmed that the documents whose locations and filenames identified below are confidential and proprietary to Qualcomm and were posted without Qualcomm’s permission."

Among the affected Git repositories that have now been taken down by GitHub include a CyanogenMod repository, Sony Xperia Developer World, and dozens of other affected GitHub accounts.

You would think that DMRN would want as many live shows as they could get. I guess this says quite a bit about how programming agreements are being maintained.

July 8, 2014: great show! Hard to determine who has the more lovely voice, Redacted or ponyboy sunset. The new equipment with its fuller functions as exciting and promises much for GabCast too.

Great show once again and I judge shows based on how quickly they would be thrown off the Keith Rowland Dark Matter Radio Network. This one was a 10 missed calls, 6 voice messages and 13 text messages. A very high score. Never change.

I'd call the Mumble software test on the show tonight a success!  Not a single dropped connection or mysterious drop in audio quality. Very encouraging indeed!
As always, good show tonight guys!
